OK, How does this sound so far?.......
Theme: " BRYCE - Architecture"
Architecture and cityscapes/skylines. This could be a skyline/cityscape, or maybe the inside of a building or church. Maybe even a complex piece of machinery.
Basic Composition:
...all architecture is created by the artist within Bryce using any building tools that come with Bryce whether it be primitives, terrains, trees, 2d surface, etc. etc.
...although I would rather not see photographs of buildings applied to 2d surfaces to be used for entire buildings, as long as your main focus is modeled entirely with Bryce, the technique you use for the rest of the image is up to you.
Imports:
As far as imports go….. Again, as long as the main focus of your image (architecture) is modeled with only Bryce, feel free to use anything else for your image.
Postwork:
Post work should be used tastefully. The over all theme here is architecture and cityscapes, so feel free to use post work for color enhancements, DOF, or creating textures.
Let me know if this covers everything, then we can either tweak it or Let'r Rip (post it).

Bobby hit the nail on the head. I'm very pleased with this idea and I wholeheartedly approve.
Now as long as the deadline is in May 2012, I should have something ready by then.
Good luck with this one, people!

I think that the thing about booleans is that if you start simple you can quickly work up to complicated.
I seem to remember a quote from a sculpterer. It went something like this:
"The statue is already there in the rock. I just chip off the parts that aren't the statue."
If you find the idea of booleans worrying, just create a cube and make it positive. Then create a cylinder and make it negative. Set the cylinder into the cube - doesn't really matter where - and group! Observe what happens!
The possibilities are endless.

i fully agree - thats exactly how i work, just see the basic shape, a rectangle, a circle, and start whittling away. - but most of all, have fun. - once you read the basic tutorials on the terrain editor then you'll discover even more possibilities.
and there is so much satisfaction in creating your own models etc, than just importing something pre-made.

CrazyDawg: do you mean using the 'C' option to collapse the boolean to one single object?

no rj, i mean doing a few boolean objects then joining them all together so they look like one structure. i'll have to find something so i can show you what i mean i know what i mean but its hard putting it in words so you all understand me
I have opinions of my own -- strong
opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

CD: It's just a case of breaking down the object you want into smaller chunks. And then grouping them back together.

I agree entirely that a Bryce challenge should only allow the use of Bryce. I'll get modelling with those Bryce primitives straight away. Great idea brholte, particularly as I love modelling with Bryce primitives. This challenge will show just what people can achieve not only artistically but technically as well.

You have a couple options, though it is limited. I would say layering the comp for anything but DOF is out.

I never thought it would be so tough to choose a theme for the Bryce challenge. After thinking long and hard on a theme that would not only yield some great images, but test our creativity while keeping true to Bryce only images, I decided to go with Architecture and cityscapes/skylines. This could be a skyline/cityscape, or maybe the inside of a building or church. Maybe even a complex piece of machinery. It looks as though I set the rules as far as post work, and importing objects, so here is what I have always preferred…..
I would prefer that all architecture is created by the artist within Bryce using any building tools that come with Bryce whether it be primitives, terrains, trees, 2d surface, etc. etc.
I realize that this theme would generate a need to use a huge amount of objects which would undoubtedly slow down your renders, etc.. so although I would rather not see photographs of buildings applied to 2d surfaces to be used for entire buildings, as long as your main focus is modeled entirely with Bryce, the technique you use for the rest of the image is up to you.
As far as imports go….. Again, as long as the main focus of your image (architecture) is modeled with only Bryce, feel free to use anything else for your image.
Post work should be used tastefully. The over all theme here is architecture and cityscapes, so feel free to use post work for color enhancements, DOF, or creating textures
I hope this is not confusing. Feel free to reply and give me suggestions on how to tweak the rules, but as of now, this is what I have come up with.
Thanks again for giving me this opportunity!
