original thread LINK........... with more details by brholte

Feel free to post your WIPs in this thread.
(please keep image size to 800x600 and under 200kb)

Here is the Theme:

Theme:   " BRYCE - Architecture"

Architecture and cityscapes/skylines. This could be a skyline/cityscape, or maybe the inside of a building or church. Maybe even a complex piece of machinery.

Basic Composition:

...all architecture is created by the artist within Bryce using any building tools that come with Bryce whether it be primitives, terrains, trees, 2d surface, etc. etc.

...although I would rather not see photographs of buildings applied to 2d surfaces to be used for entire buildings, as long as your main focus is modeled entirely with Bryce, the technique you use for the rest of the image is up to you.

Imports:

As far as imports go….. Again, as long as the main focus of your image (architecture) is modeled with only Bryce, feel free to use anything else for your image.

Postwork:

Post work should be used tastefully. The over all theme here is architecture and cityscapes, so feel free to use post work for color enhancements, DOF, or creating textures.

As I've just finished two cityscapes and already posted them in my gallery..I'm kinda bored of the theme for a bit.

I'm always out of step with the world.

Okay - heres WIP-01, The easy stuff from Brysters starting point.  Starting with a cube, shape and repeated for the crenallations. another cube for the wall, make it positive, then using negaitve cubes for the opening, the metal grille is cylinders. textures etc, and bryce trees. Note to the Bryster - theres some damn funny perspective lines in this image, gonna be fun trying to duplicate them. Ive already decided not to include the people, after all its a Bryce challenge and i would need to poser them in. and quite frankly i'm going to have my work cut out with the architecture. right now onto the next bit.

Well done rj001, for taking up TheBrysters suggestion. I'm sure you'll do it justice.

I had a few ideas.... first it was going to be the Potala palce in Tibet, then it was going to be Tower bridge... then Big Ben LOL... But I sort of went back to the ori´ginal idea, but this time a Buddhist monastery perched on the side of a mountain. Here is the work in progress... two parts of the monastery.

Nice feel to those models dhama - looking forward to more, recently finished a mountain temple myself, had a heck of a job getting it positioned of the terrain, so really looking forward to seeing your solution..

dhama ( ) posted Sat, 10 May 2008 at 5:17 PM

I tried a little setup to see how I would approach it, and made the mountain first, but I think the solution has to be the monastery fiirst so that I can get the placement right, and then build a mountain around  it in smaller pieces. I did a similar thing with my tree roots on the rocks on the side of a mountain. I started with the roots and gradualy added rocks till it looked like the roots were wrapped around them.  Just a case of getting to the root of the problem eh?

Looking good so far, you seem to have a handle on it already. 👍

WIP-3, additional modelling of the archway (i'll get to the frieze later) - also modelling the birdcage and potted plant. The use of birdcages in old paintings is symbolic of the artists trapped soul or muse, maybe he is being forced to paint something against his will. i notice there are a lot of birdcages in this image. not sure what the potted plant, or the rugs over balcony mean, but they occur frequently too.

WIP-04: some texturing, as its only background i can keep some of it simple: a coin face applied to a cylinder for the head crest on the left side of the arch. a modified rug texture from google, applied to the rug terrain. - and for the relief i used a piece of a copper frieze image and applied it to terrains. The sky is going to need some work, (i may have to hand paint it )-  as is the lighting for this scene, ill need lots of spotlights to mimic the shadow falls. fun fun fun.

WIP-05: the house on the walkway, a simple bit of boolean cube modelling, the texture is an old brick txt from way back, mad a bit brighter. bryce standard concrete with mods making the stonework. - the bugger on this is that i modeled the building as it works architecturally, but in the painting there is some badley forced perspectives on it, especially at the roof, which i cannot duplicate. - guess thats going to be the trade off in this image.

WIP-07: The small stairway on the left. simple collection of cubes made positive, negative cube and negative cylinder with a sphere on top, make the recesses. steps and window framing added, again that modified concrete texture. the recess has a picture that i cant make out, so i put in one of mine from my gallery. (A wet kiss if you can name it hahah). The cornice is just more booloeans.

As i am not doing the figures i had to make up the return edge, which i am assuming is hidden by the men and the little girl.
Thnaks again for all the +ve Feedback.

Hope ICM gets the upload page sorted out soon, i should be finished by the end of the week mwahahahahahahahah.

WIP-07: Now the building behind the staircase, the artists perpectives on this are all wrong again, but never mind. simple modelling, cubes positive and negative for building and windows. The first cornice is 'The Shape' (There are those that will know) The Upper cornice is a collection of primitives again. (Noticed i had missed out a brick line and had to slot that in under) Is this helping? Should i stop? (Maybe i should get  back to work though before anyone notices...)

RJ mentioned perspecitve earlier on. I think this was probably done in what we used to call Isometric projection, which involves angles of either 45 or 60 degrees depending on the surface in question.

Hey rj, or anyone, how about splitting off rj's WIP's into their own thread like the bryster's locomotive?  I'm really enjoying following his progress but I agree that he probably shouldn't monopolize this WIP thread either so that seems like a fair enough solution.

Any thoughts?  I for one am looking forward to rj's continuing progress postings.

Here's my work so far.  Haven't had as much time as I would like to work on this.  I'm hoping to have it done by the end of the challenge at least, but if not, still should make a good image.

I still have to add several bits and pieces of detail.  As of now, I am modeling each section seperately.  For my WIPs, I will assemble the different sections together in a seperate file to see what it looks like so far.

Still trying to think of the best camera angle to capture all/most of the architecture.

................I have a feeling that as soon as I think I'm getting somewhere, my computer is going to get really slow on me and Bryce will poop on me.

Benjamin - I'm so glad you put in the that imports are OK on distant objects. I really need some curved support cables and tried multi-reping spheres along a path and while it looked good it took 400 spheres. That slowed the Bryce wireframe to a crawl. Modo made cables worked so much better!
Great start on your building and I really like this theme. Been a long time since I did a  mostly Bryce scene.

brholte ( ) posted Wed, 21 May 2008 at 8:04 PM

Yeah, normally I would say no imports, but scenes like this generaly require massive amounts of objects, so I guess we have to be fair.  I don't want people to quit just because their scenes become too frustrating to wait on.

The voters will be the judge of what is TOO many imports.

Good luck, and thanks for participating!

Don't you hate it when after workiing on an image for a couple weeks, and you've managed to teach yourself something new, only to realize that you need to start your whole image over based on this new discovery.  Well,  that is what happened with my challenge entry.

So, I've started fresh (at least I had an idea what I was actually looking for this time).  Although you may not be able to see it, this image is much  more cleaned up and easy to work with for me!  I also took a page out of Rj001's WIPs and decided to "texture as I go".  I've been spending tons of time in the DTE and its really paying off!

I'm especially proud of my marble texture which you can see in this WIP image.  This will not be my actual camera angle for my image, just one that works well for what I have so far.  Now I just have to figure out how to get some nice stained glass windows that will fit nicely into those holes..............

.........and on one more note,  has anyone checked out the challenge entry page yet?  There are already some really impressive images, and there's still another month to go!

brholte ( ) posted Thu, 29 May 2008 at 5:39 AM

Sorry rj,  I didn't mean to make the "New technique" sound so magnificent.  I was merely trying to describe how unorganized my last attempt was.  It was a mess.  It was impossible for me to edit a specific section let alone apply textures to everything.  My groupings and families were not helping either.

I simply learned the hard way how to Bryce with Structure.  My progress on this image is 10X faster now that I can actually manuever through my image with ease, instead of trying to........

.......ungroup booleans and select the objects I want to edit and then try to regroup, but I can't seem to get ahold of that one negative object I need to complete the group, so my booleans don't ever regroup the way I want them to.  Opps, I accidentally moved this section over,  bla bla bla....

That was what trying to "make progress" on my last attempt was like.  You more experienced brycers probobly remember these days.  Nothing will make me quit on a project quicker than that last example.
