Subject: buy xp before it expires?

lbjvg ( ) posted Sun, 11 May 2008 at 12:11 PM · edited Sat, 10 August 2024 at 7:39 AM

Hi -  I have Vue pro studio (upgraded from within Esprit) installed on XP home edition 32 bit .  There are 5 computers on the home network all with the same OS.  The processors are all single core or hyperthreaded at most.   The video cards are integrated except for one with an ATI radeon express card.  The performance is tolerable but I have an itch to buy at least one machine with current technology.

I am in no rush to buy a new machine except that XP is going to expire soon.  Given that some people consider XP to be superior to Vista, I wonder should I get a Core 2 Quad processor with XP (home or pro?) or Vista?  The idea behind going with XP would be to avoid Vista and wait for  Windows 7.

Would Vue ProStudio/Esprit (or Poser 7 for that matter) benefit from from the latest Intel processors anyway?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

(I don't see how to edit a post)

For example: Dell Inspiron 530 is the kind of thing that attracts my attention.

There's a lot of BS written about Vista, usually by peeps that have never used it, sure it was flaky when it first came out, show me a Windows OS that wasn't [LOL] but with updates it's just as good as XP in my view, I don't have any grumbles about Vista, it works fine for me and for the record, I run Vue6Infinite, Poser 6 and 7, Photoshop CS3 and Hexagon 2 as my main apps. plus all the other usual stuff!!
I'm not gonna tell you what to get, all I'm saying is that Vista is good for me!

Injustice will be avenged.

Yes Microsoft as of 2010 will no longer be supporting the different flavors of XP so many folks are making the switch to Vista.

However, also in 2010  Microsoft is suppose to be also releasing its Windows 7 (formerly know as Blackcomb and Vienna) operating system or whatever it will be called after its release in either 2010 or 2011 depends on who you are listening too.

At the moment I am trying to read as much info on this new OS it's suppose to be replacing Vista and will come in both a 32 and 64 bit version. I am reading where a lot of folks are skipping upgrading to Vista to go right to Windows 7. As for me I am not updating from XP just  yet I spend more time confused than anything else about all these OS. I was going to upgrade to XP64 but I do not want to have to fight to find drivers and also even finding a copy to upgrade to. The copies I have seen available for XP64 are costing more than Vista Ultimate 64 and there is no support for this OS from Microsoft.

I know this I run a dual core 64-bit processor and in time I will need to upgrade to a 64-bit os as there is no sense in adding anymore ram (I can get 16GB on this machine) when still running a 32-bit OS.

I'm looking after my XP disk like the family jewels.
Vista is very intrusive. You must agree to allow it to collect information on you without instance agreement.
Bill has enough money for many life-times, what he wants now is power.
Vista secretly collects info. on what programs you have installed, not just Microsoft programs.
Laws limit domestic spying, but Bill somehow can get away with impunity.
It's about time the EU stops fluffing around the edges with Microsoft and tell them to stop spying on its users. Nuff said.
