I had the exact same problem and fixed it by:
later I found out on the Content Paradise message boards (I forget which post) you only need to change one setting in the nVidia control panel. After that, it worked like a charm. I'm on Vista64, but it would likely apply to XP64 as well.
Most likely it was anisotropic filtering or antialiasing. This often causes havock in 3d apps while working in preview mode for some reason. It's usually a good idea to set your drivers to allow the program to dictate what the settings will be or turn the features off completely for certain profiles.
Poser is currently set to let the program dictate the 3D settings and it's still a crash-fest.
So i turned off anisotropic and antialiasing, changed conformant texture damp as you specified, and turned off thread optimization... and i thought it worked i loaded and figure and no crash, hit NEW and still no crash.
so i turned off poser and restarted (with OpenGL saved as preview) loaded a figure. and crashed :(
EDIT: AND THEN i double checked and somehow even though i hit apply the control panel had completely failed to add a profile for poser... so i redid it, hit apply, made sure it saved, and tried again- and NOW it seems to be working :D!!!!
so the question i've been waiting months to ask... if i upgrade my graphics card will i upgrade my preview speed?

Depends on how old your video card is, and how fast the new video card is... also you might find your system is processor limited.. if that's the case, your processor could be limiting your preview speed as well.
With Vista, you can do a system evaluation, and my slowest componant that needs updating isn't my ati x1950 pro... it's my main processor.
Your memory speed can also be an issue with new systems as well as hd access speed.
Lots of factors all working together for optimum speed.
Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.
The new nVidia drivers, 175.16, have solved all openGL problems on the 9000 series. But, as reported in other forums, not so good with the older (based on different architecture) GPU's.
Since this update, I haven't ahad a single opengl problem, not even with V4.2. And it's a 9600. Now I can crank up the GPU to full steam without a single problem.
Some at the CP forums running 8800's haven't received the benefit and went back to older drivers, or use the settings that have been discussed.

i have a BLAZING computer, 3ghz intel extreme quad core, 8MB super fast ram, and a really good board. the video is the slowest part because i got them mainly for Poser not for games, i have 2x 8600 GT - 512mb cards.
so if i make a significant video upgrade can i expect a preview speed increase? that would really improve my business as i sometimes do scenes with 3 or 4 characters for work and preview crawls... although now that i have fixed OpenGL preview its a lot faster than SreeD :D
im just wondering if i should bother upgrading or not. i will need to get 2 of the same card, which i certainly don't mind doing- cost isn't the issue- it's just that i have no time for games anymore and it would need to be worth it for poser.
Also- i have SLI turned off because one card is hooked to my projector. does SLI affect poser performance in any way?

I have been reading this thread with interest, as my Poser Pro 7 crashes. I have Poser set to open with a blank document window and this crash occurs time after time when I start Poser. Obviously with a blank document window, the first thing I do is either load a new figure from the Library or import a previously saved scene.
If I load a saved scene into the blank document window, which seems to load okay and then as soon as I it opens, the Poser work space ghosts - whites - out and I get an error message. (BTW, "Use external binary morph targets" is de-selected in General Preferences).
The same thing happens if I load David (or M3) into the empty document window - the main figures load fine, but as soon as I click on Figure then Conform - to conform say, the genitals to the figure - the Poser workspace goes white and I get an error message.
The error message I get points to nvoglv32.dll as the fault. This file is part of the GeForce 175.16 driver I am using for Vista 64. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 with SP1; AMD 64x2 6400+; 8GB memory and Nvidia 9600GT graphics card.
This is driving me up the wall and down the other side!

Where is the system evaluation located? I've look in the "Damn it to hell! It should be here!" section of the computer and I can't find it, nor does it come up on any system search for me. I'd love to run this on my system to see if I need to update or tweak anything.

if you're talking about the ratings system in Vista, right click on My Computer. that will open a window which shows you basic information.
You should see a Windows Experience Index around the middle and if it says "Unrated", click on that and a new window will open with various options.
It doesn't allow you to change anything, just rates your PC's power and has some interesting information.
Assuming this is what you were looking for, that is.
For anyone having that OGL crash problem in Poser 7, try this.
"Prime" Poser first. Seriously, give it a try. Open Poser with a blank document, then rotate the camera a little for a second or two, then load a figure and you should be good to go.
Seriously, give it a try, it worked for me when I was having problems before the latest 64 bit nvidia drivers for Vista. Seems Poser needs a boost to get going or something, sometimes.
There's some sort of configuration file hack, too, but I can't remember what it was.

Unfortunately even in Poser Pro I'm still crashing poser constantly when I use OpenGL for my render previews.
So I use SreeD mostly now, which certainly works, but because of the GFX card I have it runs a LOT slower in preview mode than OpenGL.
Anyone know if there is any sign of a fix for that?
