Subject: Poser Pro Shader Discrepancies

I just upgraded to Poser Pro from Poser 7 over the weekend and I've noticed that there are discrepancies with some of the shaders I use between the two applications.  I have attached an example velvet material, based on a freebie from RDNA, that appears much much too light/bright in Poser Pro.  I would like it to appear as it does in Poser 7.  I am using the same render settings (without gamma correction in Poser Pro), and even as I tweak the values of the various inputs on the nodes, it doesn't come out the same as it did in P7.  Can anybody offer any advice?

The answer to your question may lie in the gamma settings, just a guess.

The animation on your website is very well done.
Kudos!

I don't believe gamma will fix the issue, because it changes the entire image.  Thanks for the kind words, Geep.

Yes, you are correct.  I tried altering the gamma in your images 6 ways from Sunday and could not make any correlations to gamma corrections.

Observation:
There appears to be a distinct difference in the amount of gold showing in the center (on the left side).
Any reason for this?  Did part of the gold object get shifted on the zAxis?

You're using displacement and noise. There is an open bug on this for Poser 7.

Your old (P7 render) image is wrong, whether you like it better or not.

Very soon, even Poser 7 is going to render that differently.

On the other hand, there is a shader-related bug in Poser Pro, that the dev team are aware of, and which is due to be fixed in the next service pack.

Have a look at this thread:

Thanks for all the replies.  So is the bug in Poser 7 that the noise node does not interact correctly with displacement?

Is this a fix that you're working on or a Service Pack that you have privy information about?

Yes there is such a bug relating to noise and bump or displacement. I'm not certain it is the reason you see a difference, but it may be. Here is a thread about it.

Service Pack.

Interesting.  I had thought that the sort of checkerboarding/striping problems were due to the model, not P7 itself.  Well it's good to know that should be fixed in the future.  Sad about the particular look of the velvet shader being permanently changed though.  I'll have to work on tweaking it more.

So, now that Poser 7 is post SR3 it's gotten rid of that weird tiled look on certain shadered materials, but it's still present in those materials in Poser Pro.  Ambient Occlusion is more spotty in Poser Pro also. Take a look at the attached link of a shot rendered in Poser 7 SR3 and Poser Pro.

Do we know if an SR is on the way for Poser Pro to fix the issue there too?

There will be an SR for Pro. As a Beta user, I have it.

I don't see problems with AO or the tiled artifacts.

This is a Poser Pro SR render. Click for full size.

CRAP I posted the wrong example lol!  Too late to edit but here is the corrected Example 2.

Regardless, thanks for the update Bagginsbill.  Now to figure out how to get into these top secret betas...

Build 10,000 shaders. Give a couple thousand away = Poser beta for you. :)
