Subject: Maps VS Shaders

nyguy ( ) posted Tue, 01 July 2008 at 12:27 PM · edited Thu, 01 August 2024 at 1:54 PM

I am currently working on a project in Poser and want to make 100% compatible with D|S.  Here is a render I did of it in D|S. Notice that the mirror has no reflection. In Poser there is a reflection (using Firefly) of the  front of the room.  I  went in to the surface  settings of D|S and cranked up reflection to 100% Still no reflection. How can I get that to show up in both Should I use a refection map or Shader for Studio?

First things first...D|S won't reflect if there isn't anything to reflect.  So, if you've got dead space on the other side of the mirror, that's the best you're gonna get.

1.  There has to be light on the subject.
2.  Setting the diffuse color to black works best for me.

  1. Turn reflection all the way on
  2. Set Shader to Glossy Plastic.

It doesn't work as well.  The shader is a little different.

I tired what was suggested and still cannot get a reflection. I even added more lighting to scene and just get white on the mirror surface. Would a reflection map work?

A reflectiomap would work, but that is not the best solution, honestly I never had to use mirror up to now. I'll do some tests and give you the results.

What are your render settings? You need to be using the 3Delight render engine, the equivalent of Poser's Firefly, not any of the hardware OpenGL render settings.

I, personally, have found that shaders do best at reflection. Look at the floor in the attached pic. I did that with a black metal shader from the freebie section here. As someone said...make sure you've got something to reflect, and the lighting doesn't have to be directly across from it. Also see if viewing the mirror from a slight angle helps.

Yep that does the trick. Thanks.
