Subject: Carrara 6.5 Upgrade around the corner

Here are some of the hot new features to try out:

  • 3D Paint
In Carrara 6.5, 3D Painting was added to the Assembly room. A texture can be selected, edited, or assigned to an object The 3D Paint tool supports layers, image stamping, tablet support, and the ability to save brush settings for later use. In addition to customizable brushes and stamps the Carrara 6.5 3D paint tool also includes a line tool, an eyedropper tool and an eraser.

  • LODs
Carrara 6.5 provides the ability to use Level of Detail (LOD) meshes on a figure which allows the user to use lower resolution meshes while working in the scene to save time when manipulating models but then render with a higher resolution mesh or use different resolution meshes depending on how far the figure is from the camera.

There are two different ways to switch between higher and lower LOD meshes.

  1. Simple - Manually set the LOD values for the viewport and for rendering.
  2. Advanced – Allow the application to automatically switch LOD meshes based on distance from the camera.
  • Vertex modeling in assembly room
Vertex modeling capability has been added to the assembly room. By having the ability to do vertex modeling in the assembly room you are able to see the other objects in the scene. All of the features available for vertex modeling are now included in assembly room.

  • UV Editing
The UV Editor contains a 3D view of the polymesh, a 2D display of the UV values on the polymesh vertices, and a set of tools to manipulate them including a variety of selection modes and selection tools. The UV editing feature includes the ability to map UVs to a surface and to define seams and pins to “Unfold” the UVs.

  • Transparency optimizations
Rendering enhancements which will make rendering faster for most renders which include transparencies.

I am hoping that you will still be able to do vertex modeling in a separate room as well as the assembly room.  I really prefer to work in a separate and uncluttered area when modeling an object.  Also I would think that it will be pretty slow doing it in the assembly room since the system also has to keep track of all of the other objects in the modeling room.  I always felt that the major strongpoint of Carrara over the other high end packages was the ability to work in separate rooms so you don't get distracted.  And I really don't need more tools cluttering up the assembly room so I hope you can turn them off in there.

Did they do any major bug fixes?  Or are they waiting for 7.0 for those?

You can edit objects in VM room... but I need to talk that the idea of separeted rooms are a very old way and I think that this will die in future... all major softwares are working to get it in one place that is very mopre powerfull when doing animations... they dont said about bugs fixes but I think that theres a lot of them out.

Oh! WOW!

A brilliant upgrade.
The 60MB Artists Guide must be about the best "Manual" I have ever seen for a 3D app.

free to PC members, but they clammed up when one guy griped about having to pay for it.
so we shall see.  whomever downloads the open beta, let us know how it works.  post some
screenshots of UVMapping thing if possible.

Hello GKDantas, were you directing the advice my way?  Nice site in case you werent.  I see version 6.5 only takes in morphs made in Carrara.
