Subject: Displacement maps from zbrush

beerkeeper ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2008 at 12:29 AM · edited Tue, 31 December 2024 at 1:39 AM

hi!

I created displacement map in zbrush and i want it to use it in Vue..,but don't know how..Searched all the internet and haven found any answer. I want to use displacement map because Vue hardly handles more than 700.000 polys.

Thnx,...

Monsoon ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2008 at 12:31 PM

Place your map in the bump tab of the material editor and then click 'displacement'. You may have to flip it.

beerkeeper ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2008 at 3:48 PM

....i flipped image and did as u said, but i get strange object nothing similar as is should be

Monsoon ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2008 at 4:23 PM

Also the mapping is important. Make sure it's Object Parametric and Vue doesn't render low poly displacement very well. Needs improvement.

jc ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2008 at 4:53 PM

I don't think the way Vue uses displacement has anything to do with lowering poly counts by replacing a low poly cage, as in games and such like you describe.

Vue displacement is just a way to add depth to materials to improve on the bump map method.
Also, Vue tessellates all imported meshes to tris, if they are not already.

Hey jc...good to see ya back around!!

Hiya Mr. M!

Yep, good to be back. Things have slowed down a touch bizwise and otherwise so a bit more art time now.

Thanks for the WB...

sorry for my late reply,....i did as u said,....here is the displacement map from zbrush

and here is what vue reads it

that waht it looks like

unless im doing something wrong in zbrush....

Monsoon ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2008 at 7:01 PM

Ok....from first glance it seems that 1, the mesh in Zbrush needs to be much more subdivided before you export a map from it. 2, it seems that you have exported a normal map, or the wrong possible format. I'm not sure. But you're certainly on the money..something's whacked.

If an imported object is not polygon heavy enough in Vue, polygons will start to pop. However, Vue's native primitives can handle the toughest displacement. Not so with imports. Wish it wasn't so.

I will break out my Zbrush and investigate further....

thnx for reply,.....if u know how to do it in zbrush and vue, could u post the procedure,...i would appreciated it....

Monsoon ( ) posted Sat, 16 August 2008 at 5:03 AM

It would help to know what you are trying to accomplish.  Why are you using Zbrush. Are you modeling in Zbrush? Or are you just trying to make displacement maps?

beerkeeper ( ) posted Sat, 16 August 2008 at 4:15 PM

Im modeling in zbrush. In zbrush i can add lots of detail. Then i export to Vue. Problem is that Vue hardly handles more than 800.000 polys (at least on my cpu not ). Thats why im trying to make displacement maps.

bruno021 ( ) posted Mon, 18 August 2008 at 2:41 PM

Vue reads Guv tiled maps quite well, is your map a  GUV tiled map?

beerkeeper ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2008 at 12:08 AM

Yes, it is guv tile map, later on i will write procedure how i do it in zbrush,....i have posted this thread in several forums, digital tutors or geek at play which is mostly vue forum,...and got no single answer.....so i assume its impossible using displacemnent maps done in zbrush into vue.

bruno021 ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2008 at 3:58 AM

Hey, I just forgot to add the trick that will make it work in Vue, sorry, wasn't in my best of shapes yesterday:
In the function editor, you need to change the y value of the map to -1, leave x as it is.
the reason for this is that in Zbrush neutral grey=0 displacement, and in Vue 0 displacement is black. By changing the y value, you are making black=-1, so grey is now 0 in Vue too.

Can u please post , some screens or step by step procedure how u do this in Vue, cuz im not getting any results,....:(

i followed this tutorial in zbrush about dispalcemnt maps
http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Creating_Displacement_Maps
Thnx

Monsoon ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2008 at 3:16 PM

Why not just export it as an alpha and use the grayscale? That's all Vue will use anyway.

Also, you may have to run your model through UV mapper before it'll stick properly.

beerkeeper ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2008 at 3:38 PM

i exported as alpha, and its saved in psd format and it is grayscale........

Monsoon ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2008 at 4:26 PM

Try saving it as jpg then and apply it to the bump channel with displacement checked. Make sure mapping is object parametric.

I just tried exporting a displacement map in Zbrush and it doesn't do anything. I click 'make displacement map' and nothing happens. What's up with that. Where do they go?  It certainly wasn't with the exported object.

Sometimes all these tools give one a headache...lol....

No, Mark, ZBrush displacement maps have to be 16bit, tiff being the best format. Here's a screengrab with the -1 value in y axis highlighted in red.

Monsoon ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2008 at 4:50 PM

I was referring to the alpha that he saved out to see if that would work instead.

I can't get a displacement map out of Zbrush. I've got 3.1. How did you get that .tiff bruno?

I'm missing some step Zbrush.....

Monsoon ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2008 at 5:36 PM

Well I was just there again for a while and Zbrush keeps crashing on me. I can certainly see how this is all very frustrating beerkeeper.......

shokan ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2008 at 1:34 AM

from Cornucopia 3D forum:

**Vue will not have any problems with the low level .obj, that come from Zbrush, but Vue is unable to read the textures generated in Zbrush. If you can texture your Zbrush model within Vue, this may work maybe, or sometimes.

The only way I found from Zbrush to Vue is to bake down all the Zbrush textures normal-, displacement-, cavity-, and texturemaps in a separate application like Maya, XSi, Max,........... to a game level.

**Comments?

bruno021 ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2008 at 5:18 AM

When Vue6 came out, I wanted to test the new displcement, but since I don't own ZBrush, I went to zbrushcentral and downloaded the 2 low poly models with their respective maps that are offered for testing your renderer. These are a low poly primitive man head, and a sword. The sword map works wonders, the head is not too good. But to be able to make the maps work, you need to change the map's y scale to -1, just the same as in Cinema4D, if you have it.
Now this is all I can tell about ZBrush maps, I don't have the app, and I don't know how it works. At all.
Oh, both maps were GUV tiled. I don't know what it means, and I don't know if other kind of maps work.

Monsoon ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2008 at 6:15 AM

Well after hours of messin' around in Zbrush, I figured out how to export the displacement maps only to get repeatedly 'error occurred, export aborted'. So back to the dust bin with it. I give up on this one.......

The thread at zbrushcentral is here

Monsoon ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2008 at 10:41 AM

Attached Link: 3dCoat

hmmm....3dCoat exports displacement maps in several ways, one of which is black as neutral and -1,1, just the way Vue likes it.

shokan ( ) posted Wed, 20 August 2008 at 11:01 AM

I have posted a request for someone with experience with Vue/3DCoat  at the 3DCoat forum. Maybe there will be a reply. I'll post back here with any news.
