Vue F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 30 8:14 pm)
I don't think the way Vue uses displacement has anything to do with lowering poly counts by replacing a low poly cage, as in games and such like you describe.
Vue displacement is just a way to add depth to materials to improve on the bump map method.
Also, Vue tessellates all imported meshes to tris, if they are not already.
sorry for my late reply,....i did as u said,....here is the displacement map from zbrush
http://shrani.si/f/1I/U/1JS4HynV/zbrushdisp.jpg
and here is what vue reads it

that waht it looks like

unless im doing something wrong in zbrush....
Ok....from first glance it seems that 1, the mesh in Zbrush needs to be much more subdivided before you export a map from it. 2, it seems that you have exported a normal map, or the wrong possible format. I'm not sure. But you're certainly on the money..something's whacked.
If an imported object is not polygon heavy enough in Vue, polygons will start to pop. However, Vue's native primitives can handle the toughest displacement. Not so with imports. Wish it wasn't so.
I will break out my Zbrush and investigate further....

Hey, I just forgot to add the trick that will make it work in Vue, sorry, wasn't in my best of shapes yesterday:
In the function editor, you need to change the y value of the map to -1, leave x as it is.
the reason for this is that in Zbrush neutral grey=0 displacement, and in Vue 0 displacement is black. By changing the y value, you are making black=-1, so grey is now 0 in Vue too.
Can u please post , some screens or step by step procedure how u do this in Vue, cuz im not getting any results,....:(
i followed this tutorial in zbrush about dispalcemnt maps
http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Creating_Displacement_Maps
Thnx
Try saving it as jpg then and apply it to the bump channel with displacement checked. Make sure mapping is object parametric.
I just tried exporting a displacement map in Zbrush and it doesn't do anything. I click 'make displacement map' and nothing happens. What's up with that. Where do they go? It certainly wasn't with the exported object.
Sometimes all these tools give one a headache...lol....

from Cornucopia 3D forum:
**Vue will not have any problems with the low level .obj, that come from Zbrush, but Vue is unable to read the textures generated in Zbrush. If you can texture your Zbrush model within Vue, this may work maybe, or sometimes.
The only way I found from Zbrush to Vue is to bake down all the Zbrush textures normal-, displacement-, cavity-, and texturemaps in a separate application like Maya, XSi, Max,........... to a game level.
**Comments?
When Vue6 came out, I wanted to test the new displcement, but since I don't own ZBrush, I went to zbrushcentral and downloaded the 2 low poly models with their respective maps that are offered for testing your renderer. These are a low poly primitive man head, and a sword. The sword map works wonders, the head is not too good. But to be able to make the maps work, you need to change the map's y scale to -1, just the same as in Cinema4D, if you have it.
Now this is all I can tell about ZBrush maps, I don't have the app, and I don't know how it works. At all.
Oh, both maps were GUV tiled. I don't know what it means, and I don't know if other kind of maps work.

hi!
I created displacement map in zbrush and i want it to use it in Vue..,but don't know how..Searched all the internet and haven found any answer. I want to use displacement map because Vue hardly handles more than 700.000 polys.
Thnx,...
