Hiya

Because you were all so good at answering my question on how to get Poser 7s default character back I've come to pester you all again!

I had a look in the free stuff section this morning and I'm confuzzled by all the stuff there!  What should I look out for, where do I install it and how do I use it please?

Thank you!

Mandy

Hello Mandy,

In the free stuff area you find all kind of things, from textures, to props, morphs etc.
If you need something for your models or scenes, you can search the free stuff area for the items you need.
Not all items in the freestuff area can be used in Poser.
Ususaly this is stated under the thumbnail or in the info.

Some items need a specific figure to use, like conforming hair and clothes, textures.
Other items can be used as scene fillers, like furniture, weapons etc.

When you download it, it is usual a ZIP file.
When you open the ZIP file, in most cases you find a readme file where you find the info for that item like copieright and usage, how and where to install and how to use it.

.OBJ or Wavefront .OBJ files.
If you download .OBJ files, you can import them into Poser under "File" , "Import" , "Wavefront .obj"
It is posible that .OBJ files are bare and not textured.

I hope this answered some questions.
If you have more questions, feel free to ask  😄

I am not a complete idiot, some parts are missing :)

So as long as I read the descriptions under the pictures I can use anything that says it's for Poser 7?  Cool!!  Thank you so so much!  I'm going to have a Poser 7 day today so expect to see a lot of messages from me!  lol

Yes, basicly it should work.

You also can search the freestuff for specific items, for example:

You can search for "clothes for V4" , all afailable cloth for V4 should be listed.

Keep reading the discriptions though, for example sometimes people offer only texture packs and place it in the clothes area.

Me again!

I've downloaded 1 earring set and one jewellery set as well as 2 lots of clothes so far but can't find any more characters to play with!  :(  I'm very much a newbie so don't want to play around in Poser 7 too much yet but I want other characters to mess about with!  Where should I be looking for them please?

TIA

Mandy

Welcome!!
Since others are answering your specific questions, I'll give you a link to an essay for new Poser users. It answers questions that you have yet to think to ask, hehe

It also includes some newbie tutorials showing how to load a figure, add clothing, hair, a pose and render it.

Excelent one from Acadia,

Especialy about the external runtimes.

You can create a test runtime, put your fresh freebies there and try them out before you place them in the runtime of your choice.

Since this is a new install read the tutorials Acadia has provided links for before loading your hard drive with too many content.  In the freestuff section there is a pull down window to select your program application.  That way you only look at Poser stuff.  Also do not limit yourself to just Poser 7.  Poser 6 & 5 work just as well.  DAZ3D offers freebies every week and RuntimeDNA has a great selection of free materials and lights.  All you need to do is register and it's free.  I am not mistaken, you should be able to still pick up Free Michael 3 and Aiko 3 LE from DAZ.  I don't think Victoria 3 is available any more.

I feel like banging my head against a brick wall right now!  I went to the first link that Acadia pointed me to, downloaded the 4 figures and installed them.  I then opened Poser to see what they were like but they weren't there!  I thought a reboot would fix it so I shut down, waited 10 seconds then booted the machine but they still aren't there!!  :(  What have I done wrong please?

Don't worry, I've just found a naked Michael 3 so I'll play around with him for a while  :)

Aha,

They should apear in your "Figures" area of your runtime, under "DAZ People" I think.

Edit.

Just thinking, is it posible you downloaded/instaled the DAZ Studio version instead of the Poser version??

I dont think they apear in your runtime than...not shure though.

Bullseye!  I've just found Akibo in the figures area!  Thank you!

Michael and Victoria will appear under 'DAZ People' and Aiko 3 LE has her own folder. All can be found in 'Figures' of the runtime folder.

OK, so I've got a clothed, haired character now... how to I get her arms to go down to her body though, instead of sticking out to the sides?  I've given up on the tutorial... it's saying I should have things that aren't there!  :(

Jestertjuuh ( ) posted Tue, 23 September 2008 at 11:09 AM · edited Tue, 23 September 2008 at 11:10 AM

Ok, first things first.

Here I am with the hard questions again

For the clothes, are they conforming or dynamic??

When you look at the litle screen where you figure is bravely standing, on the top left you see "Figure-1" or the name of the figure or similar, that is where your conforming clothes apear.
If they are dynamic, you find it next to the figure thingy, thats the props area.

If they are conforming, Select the clothes (one each time) go to the top of your screen and click "figures" than select and click "conform to".
You get a pop up screen, select your person in that screen and click ok.

Now the clothes stick to and move with your litle dude/dudete.
If they are dynamic clothes, thats a whole other story and you better can waith with that untill you feel more confortable in Poser.

Conforming hair works the same as clothes, if the hair is a prop (not dynamic), you can parent it to the head.

For poses.
You can eather download poses or look under poses if they are not there.
Or double click on your dude/dudete, you get a pop up screen with dials.
On the top left you can click to list and select body parts and move the dials to move the parts.

I hope this was a bit clear

And what are the things in the tutorial which you dont have?

Hold on... let me open Poser again

Okey dokes, I've got the figure 1 thing in the top left so the clothes are conforming, right?

I've just followed your instructions and she is posing now!!  Woohoo!!  Thank you so so much!!

The tutorial was saying about choosing clothes and I didn't have that on my screen so I cheated and used an already clothed character!  lol

Jestertjuuh ( ) posted Tue, 23 September 2008 at 11:30 AM

"Figure 1" is typical DAZ I think, if you use a Poser model it will state the name like "Jessy".

If clothes are conforming, you find them there to, usualy the name of the clothes like "Dress" or "trowsers".
Same go's for conforming hair.

And grats on the posing

All I'm getting, when I click on the arrow is figure 1 and nothing else!  Does that mean I've been a dumbo and downloaded the wrong one?  If I have, how do I uninstall the wrong one and install the right one please?

Sorry for all the questions today!!

Jestertjuuh ( ) posted Tue, 23 September 2008 at 11:43 AM

No worry about the questions, we are all here for that and to learn something 😄

"Figure 1" is you model, Akio, Victoria 2 etc.
If you loaded clothes seperatly and they are conforming, they also show up in that list.

If you loaded clothes who are dynamic or a prop, they apear in the list right of the figure list.

But you sayd that you loaded a clothed model, this means that the clothes are part of the model and dont show up in the list.
In other words, you can not remove the clothes.

aha, now we get to the part where it is all about....(drumroll).....RENDERING

Yup, rendering is the word, simpley sayd, your going to make a "digital picture" of your model.

ok, when your all happy with the pose, clothing, lighting etc, than you can render.

On your work screen, where you found the figure info..you see a tab named "Render"
If you click it, you go to the render screen, here you can configure your render screen settings (on the top left again)

If you look at the right of your work screen, you see a icon of a camera, if you click that, the rendering starts.
It takes a bit and you see a rendered picture of your model unfolding.
In this stage, you use basic settings, for better results you better can wait untill you feel more confortable in Poser.
Render settings is a whole new chapter.

When rendering is done, click on "File" (most top left of the screen) than "Export" and select "export Image".
Do this when your Render is visible in the work screen, otherwise the raw unrendered version will be saved.

Poser exports standard in PNG, but you can choose in the save screen for other options.

Yep, that's Aiko 3 LE alright!  Good job.  Come back to us when you have more questions.  Meantime, check out the tutorials at DAZ and Rendo, read them carefully and apply what you learn to Poser.  But you must read those tutorials carefully, there will be instructions you may not understand, or you may need other content or software you may not have quite yet.

I agree with hbore tottaly.

Also, save the links to the tutorials and categorice (s/p?) them like Render, clothes, lights, materials etc.

That way they are easyer to find back.
On top of this forum is also a usefull sticky thread by Acadia, lots of info there.

Mandy, what 2D software are you using now and how long have you been using it?  If it is Photoshop, Photopaint, or my favorite PaintShop Pro,  I strongly suggest that you save all your figure files as .tiff's or .psds.  Rationale:  alpha (mask) channels are automatically stored in those formats-great in removing your grey background so you can substitute it for something you want--Jan
