Subject: Props Parented to Figure Don't Move With Figure

This is a nice Robin set, but the mask and belt don't move when the figure is posed.  When I first load either they are props for the main figure, but then do not move when I pose the figure.

There is no option to parent them to the figure, as they are already listed as props as part of the figure (so I guess already parented to the figure?)

How do I get these to move when the figure is posed?

They should be parented to a body part, not to the whole figure.
The mask should probably be attached to the Head, and the belt
to the Hip or Abdomen, depending on where it is.......

Ockham is correct.  The mask must be parented to the head and the belt is parented to the hip.  Just because they are props, they have been designed for a particular figure in mind but do not automatically parent to the figure.  Word of caution about parenting belts:  there will be a tendency of poke-throughs when the character figure is posed.  The remedy around this is to scale until it looks appropriate.

I have no choice to parent them to any body part.  When I load the prop it is already part of the only human figure in the scene.  When the parent option is selected, that human figure is not in the tree.

Scene with Simon

Load Prop

It's shown as Simon - Prop

I cannot parent it to Simon's head because when i go to set parent, Simon isn't in the tree.

It's the same no matter what figure is loaded into the scene, even M3 for whom the prop was created.  There is no way to parent it to a part of the body.

It's not much help but try unparent it first: choose prop and set parent to univerese. Now try to parent back.
Downloaded that and all is working as it should, after loading from library the prop shows up and is not parented to anything, then I parent it to corect body part and after posing human figure it moves as it should, so can't help.

Could you actually describe how you parent your props?  That might clarify the problem.

At least in Poser 5 you have two drop down menus, figure and object.  Normally you use figure and the conform to----.  If it is already tied (conformed to something), the figure will not be an option.  Have you tried the object drop down menu and selecting change parent option?  The figure should be active there.  Jan

Describe how I parent a prop?

It's Poser 7 BTW.

Generally I have a figure loaded and then load the prop.  Then I go to the figure menu, set figure parent, and select the parent.

In this case I've tried the following:

- First load the prop

  • Load a figure

Immediately the prop becomes part of the figure and cannot be parented.

I tried parenting it to the Universe, but it's still listed as part of the figure and the figure does not appear in the parent tree.

I tried the Object menu to change parent, but the figure doesn't show up there.

Are you sure that they are conforming objects; they could be dynamic?  See if it shows up in the cloth room.  After you crete a sim, check section 2 and see if you can clothify it.  Jan

Adom said he downloaded the props and then could parent them.

flibbits ( ) posted Sat, 18 October 2008 at 12:10 AM

Yes, it can be clothified.  Does that mean it can't be parented?  Why would Adom be able to parent it?

Adom ( ) posted Sat, 18 October 2008 at 4:07 AM

Those are not conforming! They have nothing to do with Figure (those are simple props).
And: most props can be called "dynamic". Here dont even try to run simulation on them since the belt is not one geometry (it's made of couple separate pieces so the effect is going to be "strange") but the mask is (one geometry so it can be ran through symulation without problem, but not in your case since it becomes automaticly parented somehow).
And yes I could parent them (not conform!).

@flibbits**
**I read your post how you parent it and there is a mistake. You cannot parent prop by figure parenting window and that is why you don't see your human character in there. More over if you click in that window on one of your props then the Change Parent from Object menu will be disabled.
Follow this:

  1. load whatever you need (human and robin clothes)
  2. select 1 prop (ie. mask)**
  3. go to menu: Object>Change Parent and choose the head of your human
**3a. if the prop is selected you can also use set parent button in properties window

I really hope that was a problem:)

Just as a tip here. There is an alternative way to parent items to a figure. Go to Window>Heirarchy Editor and when that window opens you can drag props in that window to whatever body part you wish to parent them to. Just click the name of the prop in that window and drag the name to whatever body part you wish it parented to.

Thanks!

Both Adom's and Los Tin Spaceman's fixes worked.  Adom's for getting it right in the first place, Spaceman's for fixing this particular scene.

Hurrah!
