Subject: Poser Pro problems

Jcleaver ( ) posted Fri, 28 November 2008 at 10:26 PM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 5:52 AM

I am having an issue with Poser Pro.  I just bought it with my coupon, and installed it.  i loaded a scene and did a render.  Everything rendered fine; though at the same speed as Poser 7.  I am running Vista 64 on a quad-core system.  So i am not sure of the benefit even with solving my next fatal problem.

Now, when i load Poser Pro, I can't delete Simon which loads automatically.  Poser Pro just freezes.  Has anybody had this issue?

I can think of 2 things.

  1. nVidia card with old drivers
  2. Some sort of problem with the temporary files, the OS is not letting Poserpro save the temp files necessary for the undo operation.
BTW, have you set up Poser to render as a separate thread, and the number of processes to 4? Also, to get the 64bit render engine going, you need to render to background or to the queue (doesn't have to render to a network, you can use the network queue on a single machine too).

Well, it seems the problem is it locks whenever I click the OK button.  I just went into preferences, and changed the processes to 4; and clicked OK and it froze again.  I also tried to change where temp files are stored thinking that maybe it did have problems with that.

I am running an ATI 4850 with the latest drivers; so it wouldn't be old nVidia drivers.

I'll try to reboot and see what happens.  Thanks for the reply.  I didn't know about the 64 bit not engaging unless rendering as background or queue.  Thanks!

John

I can render in the 64-bit firefly and not need to be rendering as background or queue. When I render my scene I just hit the normal render button, bring up the vista task master and can see the 64-bit rendering is engaged. My machine is an Intel quad-core, 8 gig, vista 64 rig but I have a nVidia card and not ATI. But I can render with 64-bit firefly without needed to run as background or in a queue.

I know when I installed PPro on my rig I made darn sure to run it as the admin if you do not have the UAC  disabled.

Quoting from page 22 of the PoserPro Reference Manual:

Poser Pro ships with 2 versions of its FireFly render engine: A 32-Bit and a 64-Bit version. Traditionally computers utilize a 32-Bit Operating System, which can only address a limited amount of memory. However, there is an increasing amount of computers that are equipped with a 64-Bit Operating System. If your computer has a 64-Bit Operating System, Poser Pro will use its 64-Bit FireFly Render Engine to access as much memory as possible. To utilize the 64-Bit FireFly Render Engine, you must select Render in Background

I just ran into something bizarrew, but it affected all versions of poser.

I updated my ati drivers and thought that was the issue.. but it was NOT.

Oddly enough, I had to update my space navigator driver! They had an update a few months ago, and while no fixes were mentioned, installing that cure my poser lockup issues.

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

I rebooted, and installed the service pack.  Still, no joy in PoserProville.

I guess I'll have to uninstall/re-install and see what happens.   Otherwise, I'll have to check to see how good Smith Micro's return policy is.

Thanks,

John

Well then they may need to take another look at that cuz I am not rendering backgorund or queue and according to the task manager the 64-bit firefly is engaged, using all 4 cores and up to 6 gigs of ram out of the 8 depending on the scene. Honestly in my case using the background to render was giving me more trouble much on the lines as jcleaver is having. Go figure huh? LOL!

Have you tried the usual "disable aero and stuff" solution for Vista video woes?

Yes, I have.  I don't think this is a video problem though.

Strangely enough, i just tried again and it now works as it should.  I didn't do anything between instances of it not working.  I am baffled.  I guess i will play with it some more.

Thanks,

John

If you want to speed up deleting stuff, try using Shift + Delete.  Stops poser storing an undo point for it

There's another thing about Poser which needs to end. How ridiculous is THAT? I can't think of any other program which loads optional content at the same time you open it. Give me a blank scene any day. For one thing it takes longer to load, for another thing, nobody gives a shit about Simon.

But anyway, yeah, I had that same exact problem when I first installed PPro. Wouldn't allow me to delete and kept crashing the second I hit OK. Eventually after trying several times I rebooted my PC and tried it again and this time it worked. of course I immediately set my preferences to open a blank scene and saved that in general preferences and closed Poser.

I never had the problem again, and really have no idea what caused it.
For a program as finicky as Poser can be at times, it's just plain idiotic for them to make the default opening scene one with a figure loaded into it. just stupid with a capital S. Annoying, too.
I'm hoping Smith Micro has enough sense to look at these myriads of totally avoidable Poser problems and take care of it all in future versions or updates.

That is, Unless they sell it before they get the chance...
