bigdave1960 ( ) posted Tue, 02 December 2008 at 9:04 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 5:40 AM

I have some fir trees in vue 6 infinite that i want to use in a winter scene is there an easy way to put snow on them? Im a bit of a novice at vue so the more straight forward the better

in the material editor, create a new layer and add a white layer to the fir tree. There is a tutorial out there somewhere. I will look for it.

There are several ways of doing it.

If you want total whiteout on your leaves, jjust set the overall colour to white in the colour correction box on teh colours and alpha tab

If you want only bits of snow, use a mixed material driven by a fractal and you can also set the height and slope functions on the influence and environment tab.

If you desparately need something, IM me with your email address and I'll send you one of mine.

See this image - I'm trying to figure out how the artist got those snow blobs on the leaves/branches....is he eco'ing rocks/metablobs?  Referring to the trees in the foreground.

They could possibly be the snowy trees from RDNA - looks very much like them but I may be wrong (doesn't happen very often hahaaaaaaaaa)

If you look close enough it appears to be 1 tree slightly rotated a bit and resized per instance, so just as a guess, I would say he modeled this tree to look like that and I might add did a Fantastic job of it!!!
Also, look at the trees in the background, especially the tops. I think there is only 1 or 2 trees there as well!!! Just my 10 cents worth, thats 2 cents adjusted for inflation.

I would rather be Politically Incorrect,
Then have Politically Correct-Incorrectness!!!

The trees in the background are the RDNA snowy pines - the snow part is relatively flat not lumpy like in the foreground.  I want lumpy snow on my trees :(

This was just a test, playing around.  I gouged out a terrain - flipped it up & moved it into the tree.  Not very good, but a start.

I really admired the image to which you refer so I emailed the artist and asked if he might consider sharing how he made the snow.  Here's his response:

This Tree was a present from Jan Walter Schliep (Walli) well known as a modeller at cornucopia. We sometimes change our models or work as betatester for other modeller friends.
The snow roof, I created with SILO, a good subdivision Proggie. Its a modelling program.

Debbie,

I use a round about method. I create a few snow blobs as objects and then eco-populate a pine. Then I turn it into an alpha.
