Subject: Infos on Vue Trees in Seven edition

yvesab ( ) posted Thu, 04 December 2008 at 4:19 PM · edited Sun, 22 December 2024 at 8:01 AM

Hi,
Could someone post pictures of the new trees from Vue 7 infinite : I don't like the planes of foliage that are extremely visible in Vue 6 Pro. On this very particular point I find that Carrara is much better  as one can see in Howie Farkes works, for instance.
On the other hand the EcoSystem is really great, as long as one don't try to make closeup, there's much more variability in the plants. I really like the terrain editor and the atmosphere editor... too. Carrara pro 7 would cost me half the price of Vue 7 infinite ...
This information would help me decide to buy either Vue7 inf . I find Vue 6 pro very limited : no python support, and rendering options are also too limited , not to mention the 2 cores limit which is a real shame regarding today's computers.

Thanks

Yves

This was already done in a previous thread in this forum, created on the day Vue 7 came out. If you do a little search, you'll find it.

The "planes of foliage" are visible depending on the quality of the tree model itself, it has nothing to do with the Vue version. There are some really great tree models for Vue where the "planes" are almost not visible (although it's very difficult to be completely invisible due to the way how Vue structures plants). Take a look at some of my images to judge for yourself, like these ones. These "planes" are barely visible.

That's not entirely true. Again, it depends on the quality of the models, but also on the lighting quality and the render settings.

I couldn;t see any "planes" the OP was talking about.. is there an image somewhere that shows something like this clearly?

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

This is a known issue. Most Vue'ers try to avoid these planes to be very noticeable (there are various tricks, like slanting the trees a bit near the camera, for example). But look at this image, for example:

Another one. Look at the top of the red trees.

And another one...

I could go on and on...

But, again, this depends mainly on the tree models and whether you know some tricks or not... ;-)

No disrespect to the artist, but that last image link you posted - the tree could have done with being a higher resolution too.  Those telescopic branches are a killer

Thank you for your answers, from the posted pictures it seems to less affects conifers, where "leaves" are much smaller.  I've seen a tut. at geek at play explaining how to rotate the trees (a maple) in the foreground to avoid this problem.
Are there any other useful tricks to know regarding this problem, concerning some trees ?

thanks

If you have Carrara 6 Pro you can Export the trees you make for use in Vue on close-up FG shots and use the ecos for the distant trees. You know in Carrara you can roll, rotate, or bend the leaves before applying them on the tree. This helps very much is the realism catagory as if done correctly the way Martin (Howie Farkes) does them in his images!!!

But on the Carrara note. Carrara is not very good at to distant renders, it tends to look a bit like Bryce, but Carrara is Fantastic for not to distant, close-up and indoor scenes. I rendered a scene indoors with Carrara that had the caustics of the Bigger Apps at it only took 18 minutes. I setup a scene in Vue as close as I could get it to the same and stopped the render after 5 hours, So Carrara's Indoor scene rendering is Fantastic, But I Still Prefer my Vue for most scenes!!!

I would rather be Politically Incorrect,
Then have Politically Correct-Incorrectness!!!

Hey, yvesab, between Mazak and gillbrooks, you will be able to see previews and a list of Vue 7's trees on  this page of the forum.

(Big thanks to both of them for this).  : )
