Just wondering what others use Poser for.  I'm a little bit of a noob when it comes to Poser and have used it for various projects - but I'm curious as to what others use it for.  There seems to be quite a community behind it.  Do you use it to create digital art? Do you use it in a commercial way (for advertising or theatrical)?  I mean - the images and quality that I've seen from people are astounding - are these prints that people put up for sale?  There is so much here on Renderosity regarding Poser and Daz files that I'm just wondering if the majority of people are commercial artists or hobbist/enthusiests...

for me Poser and 3D is a kind of diary.
i take all my feelings and try to put them into 3D and figures.

i try to give 3D figures as much realism as possible, because i'm fascinated about the possibilities which 3D has.
i like to change faces and like how the whole figure is affected with just adding different skins
and i love to look through other artist galleries.

i also plan to make exibitions of my work, so i'm a half commercial artist and half hobbist ;)

My tiny income is from a courseware product (study guide bundled with a college textbook)
that uses Poser animations.  The Poser part of that was done several years ago,
so it doesn't really count as a current use.....

Mostly I use Poser the same way as Milanautica above: keeping a diary in the form
of an illustrated blog.

Mostly pin-ups, although I tried some fan art too. As a long term project I'm going to use it to populate a fictional world, that is taking shape at the moment.

I revise the same figures and characters endlessly.  I think the last time I rendered an image which I considered complete was some time in 2001.  I just keep building, revising, tinkering, and never actually use what I build.  Hmm.

That, and I curse at the joint handling.  A lot.  LOL

I make meaningless pictures , mainly of mice ,  that amuse only me most of the time. Sometimes I do pics of naked bald women or men cause doing the clothes and hair takes too much effort :)

I have sold a few pics , and done some commisions , so I must not be horrible at it , I do take more time when someones paying me .

Is just a hobby .

It's just a hobby for me. A creative outlet when I have time and inspiration to make something "artsy".

These days I'm bubbling over with inspiration and ideas, but now I'm short on time to actually get creative. I've been picking up extra shifts and between that and getting ready for the holidays, it's been rather crazy.   I have a few days off now so I'm hoping to be able get into Poser sometime this weekend.

I use it to figure out ways to make it easier for other people to use it more effectively. In and of itself, I have no use for it whatsoever.

That makes no sense, but it's what I do.

So I used Poser to visualize many types of tile. I took a photo of part of my kitchen and loaded it on a one-sided square. I made a transparency map to remove the actual wall. Behind the square, I put two more squares to represent the walls as seen through the photo. I then built 40 different shaders of various types of tile and rendered them with accurate lighting and shadows to see how it would look in my actual kitchen. We found this incredibly helpful.

One of things that I find Poser 5 good for is the Materials Room.  I create a lot of my stuff in Carrara, save it as an .obj and use Poser for the materials--the results are a lot better especially the transparency node.  Examples are furniture (chairs, sofas, dressers, desks, etc), stereo equipment (old fashion tape recorders, turntables, speakers etc), grandfather clocks, pianos, scones, lights you name it.  Oh yeh, the figures-dabble a little there, well maybe a little more than little.  Jan

I mostly use Poser to make and experiment with character studies, but I have also done some quite lucrative illustration work with it recently (for a book on Yoga) and one or two client avatars. It can be a very useful tool in a graphic pipeine, often just for quickly playing out ideas.

at age 48,  I'm trying to start a new career in animation.
Right now most of my hopes are pinned to doing high-end ecards. I love the creativity of it, because at this scale you can do everything from concept to completion. I use Poser because that's where all the inexpensive goodies are, and it actually works okay for this level of sophistication (as in, not very). 
I started in CG over 6 years ago with Lightwave  3D.  I wouldn't have a prayer getting an actual animation job in the normal route, so I've looked for and found ways that might monetize what I can create, but it's too early to tell if it will really pan out. 

right now I'm just using it to create a database of my runtime...;) If I get the code appropriate, I might pass it out to other Access users, but that's waaay down the road.

I try to make pictures to match the pictures in my head. I use it to show off models...3d and otherwise...;)

give someone a model, and they'll render for a day
teach someone to model, and they'll waste a lifetime...;)

Question: "So what do YOU do with Poser...?"

Answer: Remap figures in UV Mapper Pro so that I can make even BETTER sleazy porn!  After all, what's the point of fooling around with a bunch of naked women if we can't have some REAL fun with them!  Heck, Poser even shares the first two letters of its name with those of Porn!

Ok, I'll be honest! I spend all my time downloading freebies and rearranging my runtimes every day. If I'm really REALLY lucky, I find the inspiration to do a whole render.

LOL That was what I used to do before 2002.  I think the learning curve for Poser 5 got me started with endless, pointless tinkering.  Hmm.  May use that as a title for my autobiography....

Heh - I liked that too. But eventually we settled on white/gray tumbled marble, mostly 1-inch square, but many are less wide. The result is a beautiful irregular spacing that has a very old-world feel to it, in contrast to the black granite and all that stainless steel. I then found these really cool outlets and switches that have the same colors as the marble. I spent all day replacing all the electrical stuff a few days ago, and the whole thing is now finished! It only took 3 months. Gaaaaaaa!!!

The thing is I've downloaded so many 3DS, LWO and OBJ files for importing into Poser, I'll never have them all imported, regrouped and saved as Poser Props before I die!

  Me too, I do nothing except tinker, and very seldom use any of it.

Roughly in descending order of time spent:

• Making stuff for other people to use
• Helping other people make stuff for other people to use
• Tinkering to see if I can make it do something it isn't supposed to
• I think I made a few pictures for my own amusement once. :-)

That's my vote (the white tile). Looks very nice, clean and breaks up the space between the counter and cupboards above.   The other tiles that you posted don't seem to "pop" and makes the space look to closed.

So I guess for the most part - Poser is a hobbist/enthusiest tool?  I work in ZBrush and 3DS max - I've used poser for preliminary animatics or storyboards and some small pieces of animation.  I would love to get more into character design and the like (I'm pretty good at modeling and sculpting in ZBrush and Max) - but alas my brain is already as full capacity and I have no time machine to freeze time so that I can learn another program to its full extent.  I just have to say that some of the pieces I've seen are really great and I hope that I can contribute to such a rich field of work.

I write and illustrate "learn to read" books for the little ones in my life (I don't sell them or give them to strangers).  I also develop a lot of publicity materials for my office.

I also use it to get the pictures which develop in my head out of my head and into the computer.  I need that space in my head for other things!  I used to be a semi-pro photographer, but I like the Poser models much better--they don't argue with you about poses (too often), and they usually stand pretty still when I ask them to!

At first, I used it to re-create the characters of my novels: Keilani aka Phantomgirl, and her friends and foes from my "Wind and Fire" series.
Now I also use it just to give life to other bits of my imagination. I am still a beginner (in the case of Vue, a real newbie) but willing to learn.

Mine is to use it in making poser movies. Very difficult because you will find a shortage of props and costumes available for your scenes and characters. Like now, I am looking for a security guard clothing for The Freak both on the freebie and for sell ones and still no luck!

PhilC has an Admiral Uniform for M2 that you could convert using WW2 to the Freak and change some textures it might work.

I have been using poser for creating digital graphic novels, comics, art,  and graphic design -if you know how to push poser you can get some very good results even pre post work. 

     I have also begun to use Poser for figure drawing in place of a live model.  I teach drawing at a local college, and have begun to find Poser indispensable in place of a live model- there is no budget for a live one.  Of course the proportions are not totally accurate, but they do the trick, and it's easy to create a bunch of simple poses for renders.  Even a couple of colleagues have expressed interest in learning Poser.

It's kind of actually funny seeing the finished drawings of V4 and M4 in crazy action poses.

I use Poser to animate and tell cinematic stories without having to raise huge amounts of cash and without being hounded by interference from others.

I use Poser to think up an idea and then see it realized onscreen quickly. It helps me grow creatively.

I use Poser because I like Digital toys - but I don't like to spend ridiculous sums of money on them.

I use Poser to have fun with animation and get a quick result without working too hard.

For years poser has been a hobby for me but in the last year or so I am actually making money using it through commissioned work and illustrations. But for the most part it's my hobby and sort of my therapy. 

I use it to test the tires on my jeep to make sure they are ready for snow and ice... and on occasion I tape it back together and spit out a render.

 I use it for company:)

I make virtual worlds and stories as if i'm inside.

Ok, now that's just starting to hit creepy on my gooseflesh!
