Subject: Considering Buying Carrara

buddy36s ( ) posted Sat, 06 December 2008 at 2:39 PM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 12:22 PM

Hello,

The question that I have is:   Do the light presets that one has in a Poser file transfer over to Carrara (latest edition)?

The reason that I am asking is that I am used to lighting in Poser and use Runtime DNA's "Render Studio" for my lighting.  I really like this system and don't want to re-learn a new lighting system except for tweaks.

So If I set up my lighting in P7 and save the file, can I export that scene with the same lighting into Carrara or is the lighting lost?

thanks

You can save it as a light preset and open it in Carrara. Carrara 6 support light preset from Poser by default, but you need to import then to Carrara... not all light parameters will be there but its works.

I used to use render studio when I used Poser.   I switched to Carrara several months ago.  Once you play around with the lights in Carrara, you will never go back to poser.

Carrara is far faster then Poser.

as a poser user, my vote would be to buy carrara.  note that poser lites do not
obey the laws of optics, but carrara lites do obey said laws.  thus it takes some
time to get used to doing lites the right way (carrara) as opposed to doing lites
the poser way (nostril glow, shadow maps, sets consisting of dozens of infinite
lites, incorrect application of HDRI and GI, no indirect lighting without running
python script, no inverse square fall-off, et al.).

I too used to do things exclusively in Poser, but since I got Carrara, I haven't even opened Poser except to install new stuff into my library so I can use it in Carrara. It renders faster (about ten times faster by my guess) and looks more realistic, and it has cool stuff like working caustics, blurry reflections, and sky light and indirect lighting. Plus posing is easier once you've gotten used to Carrara's translation tools. I never felt the need to do anything in Poser anymore, and I'd heartily recommend any Poser user (or DS user, for that matter) to give Carrara a try. Chances are you'll love it.

One other peculiarity with Carrara is content with morphs in PMD files.  I do not believe (based on experimentation) that Carrara can do anything with a PMD (external binary morph file).  This struck with Sanctum Art's Horde character, and the Horde clan.  All morphs are only in the PMD files.  Had to open in Poser (with the checkbox for use external binaries checked), apply desired morphs, and save a copy of the character with the morphs injected (after unchecking the box so Poser will not simply save to an external file).  Carrara will find the new character in the browser and the morphs are in.

If anyone knows an easier way, I'm all ears.

Great lights, fast render times - not to mention a great landscape and sky editor!  I don't know how anyone goes back to poser after trying Carrara.

I remeber that someone talked about the PMD conversion utilitie to work with Daz Studio... was here at Renderosity, maybe this can make PMD to work in Carrara too.

I worked with several softwares : Vue, Poser, Bryce, Lightwave. Definitively, my favorite is Carrara,  and Hexagon is an excellent complement...

I have had Carrara since V3
I have had Poser since 3--through to 7.
I have had Bryce 3-6
I have had DAZ Studio updated since whenever
I have had all versions of Hexagon.

With all the Browser interrelationships  with Carrara6 and 7, I now,  no longer ,need to have any of those apps shortcuts, OTHER THAN CARRARA,  on my desk top.

Brian

BUT--I would still reccomend adding MoI, and 3D Coat apps to supplement Carrara.
(I have latest versions of LW and XSI which I do not use!)
