Subject: How does one cut circular holes in cubes without using Booleans

Plutom ( ) posted Sun, 04 January 2009 at 11:11 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 8:06 AM

Hi folks, what I would like to do is make circular windows in objects cubes, cylinders, etc without using Booleans (cutting rectangles is a breeze).  Can this be done using Carrara 5 Pro?  If so how?

This is an example, making circular windows for a Space station wheel.  Cutting round holes into the thin eggshell surface before adding thickness.    --would really appreciate any ideas -- Jan

Hello Plutom,

there are some nice tutorials and hints about that topic over at the DAZ Hexagon board.
The Carrara modeler is more or less a small version of the Hexagon tools, so many of
the Hexagon tutorials can be applied to Carrara too.

These are just a few:

Use smooth option with a subdivided cube or other object, after two or more extrusion it will be rounded.

BTW, you don't have to model everything in Carrara. It imports a lot of formats nicely, and I find it hard to go wrong with the ubiquitous .obj.

Yes, Carrara does do the job of modeling in the modeling room. But there are other apps that can do that particular job better and much faster. (And I'm still using C5 Pro myself.) And some of the best modeling apps are free, no need to worry about the cost of adding another tool to the artist's kit.

But even with imported models, the modeling room does have some uses. I find it useful for orientating handles and stuff that ties into using constraints or basic rigging. (Like putting a pivot that doesn't lie on X,Y, or Z on something mechanical.) Might also be handy for material zones or UVs that don't quite behave once brought in.

Once you have worked with  Booleans in Nurbs apps, such as the brilliant MoI, you will wonder why you would ever have tried in Polly apps.

MoI really is a great companion to Carrara. Take the basic Nurbs stuff into the Carrara Vertex room. for Displacement Painting etc.

NURBS are tougher to UV map than SubD polys that are all quads.  Also, NURBS have way more poly counts than SubD.  Also, NURBS are not easy to remodel if exported as OBJ.  And not at all possible if imported as 3DM into Carrara.

Other than that.  NURBS are great at boolean cutting, which isn't done with SubD anyway.  Let us know when Moi can do T-Splines.
