I never do those anymore because if you don't uninstall the beta ASAP after the release date, your system doesn't have an OS anymore.

That's why God created the drive partition and the dual boot. ;-)

no way in hell would I install a beta OS release by anyone.

I'm all about using my systems, not letting them be guenea pigs for new bugs.

MikeJ ( ) posted Thu, 08 January 2009 at 3:32 PM

Nor would I. Not on an important PC at least. I might check it out on one of my others though, just out of curiosity.
I was just pointing out that in the course of so doing, it doesn't mean you're hosing your computer.

So when will Windows 7 actually be released? (Not the beta)

dlfurman ( ) posted Thu, 08 January 2009 at 4:21 PM

There is also the VIRTUAL PC route one can take as well.

The new 'jumplist' feature looks interesting.  But I won't get excited about
a new version of Windows until they pay more attention to keystrokes.
After 25 years of development, there's still no way to minimize the currently
active window without using the mouse. ... and still no way to set up a
universal set of hotkeys.

The big question is will it be better, more usable, more stable, more compatable with programs than vista?

While I am mildly interested in 7, I think it will be more of the same. Bigger, stronger, faster. Hogwash.

Compared to what? Compared to Vista, it's not that difficult to get a Windows OS that's faster and makes it easier to do what you want. In fact, it's been around for a couple of years already, and it's called XP.

On the other hand, I heard from a Windows 7 beta tester that the hardware requirements are approximately the same as those for XP. According to this tester, Windows 7 beta runs well on a 1 Ghz machine with 512 Mb of RAM - don't try that with Vista!

We'll see. There's no release date yet, last I read was that it would probably released by late 2009 or early 2010.

Alt-Space, N

A window's system menu can be opened with Alt-Space, then you can do

M - Move
S - Size
N - Minimize
X - Maximize

All with keyboard alone. Use the arrow keys after choosing move or size, then press enter.

These have been there since Windows 2.0 dude.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

I was just thinking, most recent versions of windows tend to have too many problems until SP1 is released.

well I've downloaded my copy of the 32 bit version and gotten my Beta key. Now to decide which machine I want to test this bugger on.

I made room on a storage drive for it. Downloading the x64 version.

I went through everything at the MS site to download, used Explorer, of course, got to the product key/download page just fine, installed the active x download manager (or so it appeared) and was looped back to that page every time I hit "download" Of course no other browser would even get me that far...

Those wacky guys! Well, I collected some beta product keys and went over to the Wired Blog for a working link. http://blog.wired.com/business/2009/01/windows-7-publi.html

I bought Vista the day it came out, so I guess this is just a little stroll down memory lane...

Let's hope all the nice talk about it is for real this time  :-0

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Sun, 11 January 2009 at 1:21 AM

There are direct download links on this page along with help on getting the keys. After trying repeatedly to download my copy I was finally able to use the instructions on this page and firefox with a Java auto downloader.

I'm hopeful that Windows 7 will take the best of XP and Vista (probably can count the improvements on one finger with Vista), get rid of the bells and whistles, allow legacy programs to run eg PSP 7, Raydream 3D, etc as well as allowing both 32 Bit and 64 Bit operation maybe automatic switching--senses the program and utilizes either 32 Bit or 64 Bit operation, allowing full use of RAM for housekeeping instead of the upper 512K-maybe that's done now.  Let's see, did I mention gee whiz and other blout, getting rid of the fat, cleaning out cache, etc when a program is closed, sensing program problems before respective programs crash.  Make the software virus proof--okay I'm dreaming now.  Jan

Greetings from

Internet Explorer 8 running under the Windows 7 Beta :)

Not bad. I never went the Vista route and this looks very, very nice.
My machine is a bit under powered so I dont have all of the visual goodies running, but it is running on my machine.

I do like what I call the "smart"  running tabs at the bottom. (I know there is a MS term for it, but bear with me as I play with my new toy.
The IE icon, if you hover over it, gives you a list of active sessions. You can close them from there instead of having to go to the actual tab. There are the system sesssions, that you can hover, then select. CLICK on the icon and you see all open sessions. As you scroll across the images, the main screen changes to that session. That is cool.

I'm going to play some more...

Oh and here is a quote most appropiate for something like this (Pakled you may enjoy this :) )
"Those who ride the bleeding edge of technology, are often sacrificed upon it!"

"Few are agreeable in conversation, because each thinks more of what he intends to say than that of what others are saying, and listens no more when he himself has a chance to speak." - Francois de la Rochefoucauld

I have Windows 7 installed. I created a 100Gig partition on my primary OS drive. This way I can Dual Boot. I have not had any issues with Windows 7 except for some drivers which I had to download via XP due to one of them was my network card and the other being my printer. Besides that It runs smoother that when I tested Vista.
