Subject: Converting info in Cr2's to MAT files..

lynde ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2001 at 12:36 AM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 4:48 AM

Hi all, I was just curious, does anyone else find that it takes an extremely large amount of time to successfully extract text from a CR2 file? I know what I'm supposed to be looking for but every time I try to search the document for a word it takes my system at least 5 minutes to complete the search and I have yet to be able to successflly copy all the text I need because of the same reasons and I am beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with the document because it doesn't seem too logical to me that I would be having this much difficulty on this system given the things I have done with it before, I can easily run Bryce, Poser, Photoshop 6 and a couple of browsers as well as one or 2 other things simultaneously with no trouble at all yet, one file in text editor(the same file which I can work with in Poser with no trouble) will hang everything up...

Is it like this for other people or could there be something wrong with the file that I'm not aware of? :)

hugs to all

your text editor is probably having trouble handling a big text file like most cr2s. use cr2 editor - it handles my 10meg cr2s quite well. i downloaded it from joining the yahoogroup posertech - it's in the files area. it's great. :)

CR2Edit (not the same as CR2EditOR, John and I were unaware of each others' work during development) ver5 automates all this, no need to open in a text editor. More info at link. But if you want to look at Vicki2's file, the dual window Manual Editor in ver5 opens all 22MB of her in 10 secs on 1gz machine, with instant search. You don't really have to search, the materials are always at the very end, at least on all the CR2's I've seen. I don't bother with CR2Edit or CREditor, I use MS Word (Curse you, Bill Gates), since it is really just a text cut and paste operation. Wordpad works well too, except for the really big CR2s. I can make a bunch of MAT files in nothing flat, my SMV Essentials clothing pack has about a dozen or so included, I've go naming conventions worked out so some MATs will work with mutiple items. Incidently, part MATs work too, for example you can just turn transparency on or off with a pair of them, while you have others that set colors or maps that will be unchanged.

If you use MS word make sure you save in text only format rather than a doc! But there's an easier way--if you have a MAT file already for the character that works, just open it and do global search-n-replace to swap the path to the desired texture in for whatever's already in there. You can crank out a zillion of em that way. Mary

On my Mac, I just assign lots of RAM to the text editor. Then the whole file can be kept in RAM and searches are (relatively) fast.

Dwilmes, your link only mentions version 4.0 as available. Were you mentioning 5.0 as a preview...? Hardly matters, looks worth purchasing anyway!

nfredman, 5.0 I hope will be out within a week, busy writing tutorials. As far as using Word goes, yes, it will do it, but by the time you get Word open and a monster file opened in it and scccccrrrrolll all the way to the end, you can have half a dozen MAT/MAP/MOR files done in CR2Edit. Lots of options, including the transparency Jim mentions. With 75 or so automated tools now, there is very little reason to ever open a file in an editor, but if you do CR2Edit5's works completely in RAM.
