Subject: Bryce5 or Vue4?

max- ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 11:01 AM · edited Thu, 12 December 2024 at 8:51 AM

Soon I plan to upgrade to Bryce5... but on the other hand I could get Vue4 instead. Hmmmm... a tough decision. I just can't decide. Maybe I'll toss a coin. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hmm...well...being that this is the VUE forum, we just MIGHT have some bias...:) 1. Vue will ALWAYS be easier to use than Bryce. 2. Vue will ALWAYS be faster than Bryce. 3. Vue will ALWAYS be cheaper than Bryce. 4. Vue will ALWAYS have better tech support than Bryce. I'll let the others chime in... -SMT

Hmmm...sounds about right to me Steve ;), especially the "easier" part! Laurie

You're asking a Vue forum, guess what I'm gonna say? I moved to Vue specifically because I found Bryce utterly unforgiving as well as being restricted in what I could do. Jody

...VUE! ;D In all seriousness use what you feel is best for you. Personally, even though Corel have made an attempt to give you vegetation in B5, it looks like no species of tree I'm familiar with...unlike Vue, which gives you recognisable species. On top of that, if you like your vegetation a bit different, you can also change the leaves to your own custom ones in Vue. Like I say, use the software that you think can serve your needs better. Cheers

Personally, I have always had trouble with Bryce's interface, and I can't always remember where all the controls are hiding. With Vue, I just open it and start working right away. If you're already very familiar with Bryce, maybe that isn't a consideration...unless they change things around for v.5 and then you have to start all over again! =:o At the bottom line, you've gotta go with whatever you feel most comfortable with. If you're not in a rush, you could wait for the demos. The Vue 4 demo will be out in August; there is a v.3 demo available now. I don't know when the Bryce 5 demo might be available.

I luv Vue, but I hear Bryce5 will have network rendering support.. I wish Vue had that.. =( Not that I'm going to switch or anything =) I will learn patience in time. Chris PS. Hi everyone, been hiding over the weekend

I'm just going to upgrade both:) I prefer Bryce for somethings...and I prefer Vue for somethings.... boy...pretty biased group in here;)

MikeJ ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 5:24 PM

I agree with what's been said, especially about using what you think will suit your needs best, which is actually most important. Bryce 4's interface doesn't bother me much, but editing materials seems to be kind of hit/miss, for me at least. hen again, I haven't studied it as much as I have studied Vue. I like Vue's 4-viewport interface, and yes, it is easy to move around quickly in Vue. On the otehr hand, Bryce 4 seems to deal with models with LOTS of parts easier, whereas Vue can become slow after you get over about 300 objects in a scene. But that might be more of a RAM thing, and I only have 128 megs of it. I might end up upgrading to Bryce 5 later this year as well as Vue, but it's Vue 4 first.

I will, like many here, upgrade both. I use whichever one is best for the project at hand. They have both, in the past, had their strengths and weaknesses. I expect that to continue. I find Bryce's material editor an almost impossible creation. Other's work with it with no problem. I prefer Vue's water while others I respect like Bryce. I like the texture renders I get from Vue of my Poser people much, much better than Bryce. On the other hand, for some reason, I do like Bryce's atmospheres. Others believe atmospheres are where Vue rules over Bryce. So, you see, much depends on personal likes and dislikes. I am assuming you asked your question here since a similar question in the Bryce forum is likely to get you shot if you disagree with the purebred "Brycers" on any topic at all. ;-) I think you will find many, many Vue-Bryce mongrels in these forums. ;-) Take care and Godspeed.

IMHO - Nicholas86 say it all :) If I were you and since you are more familiar with Bryce, go for Bryce first. You may want to wait for Vue 4 demo and see how you fare with it. Bill

Davecr, I am not an evangelist. ;-) Nor was I evangelizing "The World According to Vue" in the Bryce forum. I was commenting in regard to your message apparently stating that Bryce was the better buy because of upgrade price. I thought you were taking a somewhat limited view of what constitutes a better deal. Still do. You became rather inflamed over that fact. So be it. We have a difference of opinion. Big deal. I will not infringe on your right to have and state yours. Have the decency to return the favor.

Varian ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 11:54 PM

With the upgrade price on Bryce and the side-grade price on Vue 4 (side-grading to Vue 4 from Bryce 4), why not do both programs? Neither one is going to break the house for you on price. Just don't do both at the same time or else it would "feel" like it cost more. :)

Buying a "software" that does almost 'similar' thing just because of price comparison?...no, no, no...people. Buy what you can afford or want that fit your need and style of work. Bryce and Vue are both quite similar for what it does for you in your CG work. They can't be compare in the sense of "apple to apple". They are both tools that aid you in your work. Even without both these program, I have seen work done by 2d artist that does just as good, if not better. We do have a saying here that each dollar has its and this imply to products and goods in turn of "quality". Here I say, Bryce and Vue is not much different, they both have what it takes to give you that "ummmphnn!!!" in your work. To each his own and be happy with what you bought. Like I suggested, if one is more familar with Bryce, go for the Bryce upgrade if theres is "?" in your head. Its just a question of marketing strategy to win customer/user over from one to the other. Me?..what am I saying?...did I buy Vue 4 because it was cheaper?..NO! I have both and never like Bryce 4 rendering speed and user GUI...Vue 3 blasted Bryce 4 out of the sky! Who knows Bryce 5 would do the same to Vue 4? Read the other threads...using volumetric stuff in Vue 4 is already causing a lot of question, there is already a patch or two expected...now Bryce or Vue, each has its caveats and fill. Buy either one should one only be your choice and make the best out of it. If you can afford both, go get them all :) Errr..bythe way...go figure...I like Bryce volumetric clouds that Vue 4 ones...but I use Vue 4 more often!!!....LOL!!!...till I wanna almost die. Okay...I'm dead!

From what I've seen being created in Bryce 5 my Vue 3.1 which is works fine is superior in almost all respects. I don't see any major quality improvements in the works created in Bryce 4 and Bryce 5. You have to haze the sky out so much you in order for it to not look like its painted on plywood and simply dropped one end on the horizon and sloped to the foreground that it washes everything out. I always thought it looked like a leanto. I've seen kids with colored markers draw better plants then what you get in Bryce 5. No contest, Vue is superior. If you can find a copy of Vue 3.1 for sale you might want to pick it up. I have a friend who did a great animation in Vue 3.1. It wasn't easy but it worked and looks great. I tried to get him to post a link to it but it was for his company.

Max-: Having used both Vue 3.4/4 and Bryce 4, I personally prefer the capabilities of Vue. In particular I find the Vue interface more intuitive. I think that the solid growth plants in VUE are simply awesome. The inclusion of direct Poser imports (albeit with a few bugs right now) and volumetrics rounded out the list of things that I thought VUE needed. However, I think that your particular needs should be what drive your decision as to which software to purchase. I think that it is pretty obvious that there have been many good renderings from both pieces of software. I think that software support is important too. Right now Vue 4 has a few teething problems (some glitches in Poser Imports). I fully expect these to be solved in a timely fashion and Vue 3.1 was always very stable on my machines & operating systems. (I've run it on pentium systems as well as athlon systems - on Win98SE and Win2000Pro). I would second the advice about trying one of the demo versions. If you like how things operate in the demo and the interface - go for VUE. If you find that you dislike the Vue interface or features (note Vue 4 has added volumetrics!) -- stick with the Bryce path. Good Luck with your decision; Allan

Perhaps you can find it in yourself to extend the same respect shown for you in the Vue forum to others in their forums.<<< I have never presumed to ask someone not to post in a particular forum. I respect their right to post in whatever forum they choose as long as they remain within the TOS of this site as set by the owners. >>>Enjoy Vue and Renderosity I grow tired of this pettiness Good day to you.<<< Actually, as I have tried to make clear, I intend to enjoy both Vue and Bryce as well as Renderosity. The pettiness you speak of was not of my creation. However, I agree with your post in the Bryce forum and enough is enough. There is just too much art to be created. ;-) Take care and Godspeed.
