I'm just curious as to what music you all listen to when doing your work. Not your fav music or anything, but the bands that you listen to when you sit in front of the computer for hours on end finalizing those last touches of an image... Here's my list that is accurate for the last week or so. The Fragile and Further Down The Spiral. Infected Mushroom Delerium Meeku Kevin Yost Air Tool ry

Alpha ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2001 at 6:48 PM

Hendrix Pink Floyd Spirit Radio Head Rickie Lee Jones Harry Nilson For the last week or so also...

JordyArt ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2001 at 7:00 PM

Prince. A guy called Momus who you've probably never heard of but should. The Smiths(!). Robbie Williams. (Stop laughing!) Erm, and whatever else takes my fancy, from Metal to Mozart. (",)

Slynky ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2001 at 7:00 PM

Listen to Pink Flowd's "Animals" and depending on when you start iut, the album plays along perfectly to Alice in Wonderland (allegedly.... I've never tried it, and Pink Flowd denies it). ry

starshuffler ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2001 at 10:19 PM

My list: Air (Moon Safari) Beastie Boys Massive Attack Blur Ivy (Apartment Life) Indigo Girls The Sundays Sarah McLachlan Edie Brickell (pre-Paul Simon era) Rage Against The Machine (too bad they are RATM no more) Dubstar Radiohead (The Bends) Uh, I have several CDs on rotation actually, I would take me a while to list them down. I love NIN, too, Slynky, but I'm afraid I left my cds with somebody else... and also A Perfect Circle... arggh...

Slynky ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2001 at 10:39 PM

Im taking you dont like 10,000mhz Legend then eh? Not many do (I do though). I enjoy some Sarah too. RATM still exists, but Chris Cornell (formerly of soundgarden) is the new singer, ick ick. I saw A Perfect Circle last summer.... drooooooool. So pure, so rare, To witness such an earthly goddess, I lost my self control, You're compelled to throw this dollar, down..... I'd sell, my soul, My self esteem, a dollar at a time, for just, one kiss, one taste of you my Magdalena... Ry

starshuffler ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2001 at 10:48 PM

Hey, we're online the same time, Slynks! :-) I heard about Chris Cornell jamming with them, but RATM has not confirmed nor denied Chris's replacing Zack. You saw APC? Wow... (dribble, dribble...)

nplus ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 12:17 AM

hey slynky, I think the Pink Floyd thing is when you play darkside of the moon and watch the wizard of oz. I think you cue th e LP at one of the credits. Never tried it, but have heard many a story from kind rainbow hippie friends.

Syyd ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 12:21 AM

Wow, edie brickell, radiohead, massive attack, nin...Jordy, I love Robbie Williams, we all listen to some good stuff...mine's been, NIN Fragile Palestrina Mozart in particular Vesperae Solennes de confessore RadioHead Kid A ApolcytemaBezerk (Niko helps with spelling) Beethoven (Emperor Concerto) U2 Marc Bolan (Cosmic Dancer) I dont know whats wrong with me, this list of music makes me want to cry actually. How about movies? Bram Stokers Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola) The last of the Mohicans Billy Elliot The Watcher Goodnight Irene.

Slynky ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 12:30 AM

no one's listed Tool yet... I give you all 3 songs by tool now, to show the diversity.... Parabol and Parabola (2 songs, but they go as one) Sober Eulogy theres a shadow just behind me... shrouding every step I take... making every promise empty... pointing every finger at me... The Lateralus album is the only album I recommend most anyone at least pick up and give one full listen to. Its a 79 minute fricking opera of an album. For people looking for something a little more sensual, pick up A Perfect Circle's Mer de Noms (ou, qu-est-ce que je dits en francais, Sea of Names). ry

starshuffler ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 1:42 AM

Mer de Noms--- I am bound to think this is some sort of pun: merde noms... ;-) Eulogy is such a long song. We play this during cigarette breaks :-) Movies? I have such a long list, too. Pi, Lord of the Flies, Gods & Monsters, James & the Giant Peach (I love Lane Smith!), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Run Lola Run, High Fidelity, most Cameron Crowe movies... ahhh... my simple pleasures... :-)

bsteph2069 ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 1:46 AM

Hmm. where do I begin. Orbital, Orgital, orbital, BT, Sacha, Chemical Brothers Fluke! John Digweed ( all electronica groups ), NIN to calm down I use STEVE ROACH - Storm Warnings Prince, Janet Jackson, Dave Seaman - Renaissance CD HYbrid, Jean Michelle Jarre, Finally Orbital When I'm done Juan Luc Ponty ( All the time!! ) Actually it varies. If I know what I'm going to do exactly I listen to the faster stuff. If I'm not sure and feeling things out; in short thinking more I listen to the slower stuff. Then I listen to more spacey stuff to calm down when I'm done. ( It's usually quite late by then anyway so I'll want to sleep. ) Hey Jordyart which ablum for Prince? I almost forgot what a blast it can be to listen to him and work! Bsteph

starshuffler ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 2:08 AM

Btw, bsteph, John Digweed is usually around here in our local clubs, with Deepdish, Paul van Dyke and dudes like him.

slaanesh ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 7:08 AM

hmm, what music? yeah, classic like Bach, Chopin or Tschaikowsky; metal like metalica; independent / pop like Wolfsheim or Depeche Mode; punk like Chumbawumba or Die zte; rock like Bon Jovi; gothic like Lacrimosa or Sopor Aeternus; independent like Letzte Instanz. and nearly everything in between. but also often no music. then i have some lyrics or words or so in my head which must go out into a pic. the best time to work on pics is still night. i prefer 1100pm and later till dawn. so long thats me and my way. bye, :) lars

Antoonio ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 9:44 AM

Hmmm, thats a tough cookie. In random order... Radiohead New Model Army Smashing Pumpkins Apoptygma Berzerg (Syyd, spell with me, A p o pzgtym. Damn.) Tori Amos Live Tons of Finnish bands. (CMX, Apulanta, Pelle Miljoona, Ismo alanko) All my carefully chosen, precious mp's (~2G). And few special songs, those "more than life" -songs, you know. Again, in random order; Smashing Pumpkins - Beginning is the end is the.. Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with butterfly wings Diamanda Galas - Iron Lady Radiohead - Street spirit Tori Amos - Winter New Model Army - White coats, Green and grey, You weren't there Luciano Pavarotti - Nessum Dorma (Syyd can help to spell this) Lacrimosa - Ich Bin Der Brennende Komet Everlast - What it Almost all songs from Finnish band CMX. -N

ApoptygmaBeserk "Love Never Dies" dont leave me, dont go away....stay beside for another day, my love for you will never die..... Okay Niko got it...you were much closer than me though, its Nessun Dorma..... And of course I forgot, that I really listen to, and quite often, anything by Everlast, especially, the Santana one, and Black Jesus, and What it is... It was great to see that people are also listening to Air (I have the CD also Moon Safari), Massive Attack (Karma Coma), and I have to add Morcheeba, and last but not least, Portishead. I have done at least three or four renderings to Portishead. This message is coded for your viewing pleasure).

Lisas_Botanicals ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 12:05 PM

Hmmm... I don't know a lot of the music some of you have listed. I must be missing something, huh? My listening pleasures include: Creed Pearl Jam Staind Stevie Nicks Toni Braxton Dave Matthews Band Twister, City of Angels and Armageddon Soundtracks Sarah McLaughlin Alanis Varied chant CD's Varied Nature Sounds mixed with Classical music My favorite pianist at the moment George Winston A few Ozzy songs some Metallica and when not listening to CD's I have the radio on the Classic Rock channels or the cable TV on the Atmosphere's channel. I get a lot of ideas from lyrics although they would require animation to see them on a computer as they are in my head. The challenge then becomes to capture one frame of what I see in my head and have that frame hold all of the emotion.

Slynky ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 12:28 PM

I fricking hate you. Tell PVD to get his @$$ to montreal dammit...

Slynky ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 12:55 PM

When is portishead gonna release a new album already???? And everyone of you, at least give Air's 10,000mhz Legend a listen through, it's damn good (though nothing beats Kelly Watch the Stars). On the subject of Massive Attack, my friend's music store has a Massive Attack singles box set of sorts, hat changes from black to white whenever heat is oin it (ie: your fingers. A couple of days this summer though, even wiuth a fan pointed on it, it was so hot it stayed permanenttly white until night). As for Eulogy being a "long" song, check the length of the final track on Lateralus... Ry doesn't know what catergory his pics would fall into for the contest and is worried

Marshmallowpie ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 1:13 PM

Hmm at the moment I am listening to Nine Inch Nails - Closer. Before that I was listening to NIN - The Perfect Drug. Before that, the Star Wars theme, of all things. And now (NIN finished) I'm listening to Queen - Gimme the prize. I listen to a bit of everything, really. Some of Smashing Pumkpins stuff (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) is a definite source of inspiration. And then there's NIN, Queen, Bjork, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, some classical, Manic Street Preachers, Brian May, REM, whatever appeals to me, really. Can't work without music :) I don't know about you people, but do you 'see' music? I do. In music I often 'see' colours and shapes and patterns, sometimes entire images. I often try to capture this in photos..and the photos that mean the most to me are the ones that have been inspired by, or represents, a song or piece of music. Does that sound nuts?

starshuffler ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 1:33 PM

I see music, too, marsh :-) Years ago I did a piece based on SP's Porcelina. I think I should look for it. It's buried somewhere beneath my junk. Slynky, u hate me??? <:-( It's not my fault PVD is here a lot of the time. I know a radio jock who is buddies with him. Maybe I can get you his contact number? ;-) Ahh... how could I forget Tori Amos? I have all her albums. & I love "Winter" :-)

slaanesh ( ) posted Tue, 03 July 2001 at 2:00 PM

hah, great!, all the time i thougth i'm mad because i can see music & now i'm happy to know that i'm not the only one! :) ahh folks, you are great! really! i feel very good in this forum. so long & thanx for the fish. :) lars

Bsteph, my fave album is Purple Rain - as I've mentioned sometime b4 Darlin Nikki is my fave song of all time - but I like Parade and most of his albums up to Emancipation. I also listen to Jan-Michel-Jarre - his music is cool for chilin' too, but lately I've got back into 1980's pop - that stuff was so crass it's uplifting!!! Films? Barbarella!!!!! ALIEN series..yeah... Blade, and top of the list MATRIX. Oh, and the Batman series - Batman rocks, and can beat ANY superhero!!!! New subject : Books; Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Martin Amis (really good! read Success) and anything handy. I usually have 2 or 3 books on the go a once.... (",)

Marshmallowpie ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2001 at 4:00 AM

BATMAN? Aw come on...everyone knows Excalibur are the best superheroes. (Too bad they don't exist anymore) As for films, anything good, really. I don't stick to certain types of movies, I watch a little bit of everything. Just saw Chocolat a couple of weeks ago, that was a rather nice movie..and then I saw Moulin Rouge which was utter crap. And books...don't have any favourite authors really. I read a bit of everything too :-) Just finished the Red Dwarf series by Grant Naylor (well...that's what the writers call themselves anyway) and they were quite entertaining.

bsteph2069 ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2001 at 3:32 PM

Oh books is it? Actually I'm way behind the gun. On this one. Classics: Hemmingway I suppose the bible is the ultimate classic so I'm toppint the list wit it. Hemmingway comes second. Homer-Illiad, Shakespere's tragedied and comedies. Who ever wrote the pit and the pendulum. I forgot. More current stuff- anything by Rodger Zelanzny Michael Morecock - Cornelius Chronicles and Corum books and Elric. Gene Wolf- Very few authors have his style. Peirs Xanth-Prolific but enjoyable generally. Heinlein, Asimov I guess just for his ideas. Richard P. Feynman, Stanislov Lem, Phillip K. Dick-why take drugs when you can just read his stuff!, Octavia Buttler, Ann Rice, Patric O'Leary, James Morrow, and last Gor novels -banned whever they are. And last but not least. Studs Trerkel. Get one of his books and peruse to your hearts desire. Jordyart- What about Graphieti (sp) Bridge, Gold, Prince-Prince and of course For You. I think his earlier stuff may have been more fun but you cold understand him less. I forgot James Brown. His live from France ablum. Favorite movies Star Wars. ( What can I say it was the first movie I saw. ), Planet of the Apes, Ben Hur, Enter the Dragon, Master of the Flying Guilotine, A Chinese Ghost Story, Heavan and Earth, Zatoichi vs Yojimbo, Blade was cool but no match for Cleopatra Jones or Jackie Brown, Matrix, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Magnum Force!! Comics- I'm taking a strong liking Planetary Society, Vintage 70's and 80's Iron Man, Superman has too much power, Vintage Green lantern is good, X-Men when Wolverine was still psychotic-just before he bacame an enlightened man. Superheroes shows-Loved Batman BUT Wonderwoman was better!! next. Bsteph

starshuffler ( ) posted Thu, 05 July 2001 at 12:45 AM

Books-- my current bedside books are Mrs. Dalloway (Virginia Woolf) and Smoke and Mirrors (Neil Gaiman). bsteph, there's an interesting story in Smoke and Mirrors with a Moorcock character (from the Elric books). I love Michael Ende's books, The Neverending Story and Momo. And Roald Dahl, Sandra Cisneros, Nabokov, and a bunch of others. My favorite comic book writers/artists are Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Dave Louapre, Dan Sweetman, Marc Hempel--- sheesh, still have a lot more to go. I read the first issue of Kabuki some time ago and it's pretty good. And the art is awesome. I forgot who did it though.

bsteph2069 ( ) posted Thu, 05 July 2001 at 3:05 AM

Ah yes him. I saw a graphic novel by him. Um. Wait a sec. He's currently doing Daredevil I think he's David Mack. The character in the Neil Gamain novel is it an archer? If good to see Neils novels are doing well. I was sorry to see that Chris Claremont didn't do as well. Have you tried Dave sim "Cerebus"? How can you read Nabakov, Cisneros, listen to Digweed, enjoy Grant Morison BUT not like Dave Sim "Cerebus". You are deprived. =:-( > OH. I forgot one music, one movies, one comic, and one show. The Jazz Group -The Yellojackets-Four Corners- is enjoyable by anybody!, Carlitos Way-Al pachino-Humor, strength, and a good story, Power Man-Early-mid 70's-He's big, he's mean, and he has to pay rent!, The Avengers-Far more fun than a barrel of monkeys-The start of the super suave spy, and an even smarter female lead. Bsteph

starshuffler ( ) posted Sat, 07 July 2001 at 12:35 PM

I've read some issues of Cerebus and I'd say they're pretty good. I wish I have read the whole thing though, so I really can't rave about it. :-) I'm deprived, indeed. The character Gaiman included in the story was this white skinned man with the Bloodsword (or something like that, I can't remember). I have yet to read Moorcock.
