Subject: Ecosystem deletion....

FCLittle ( ) posted Mon, 23 February 2009 at 3:22 AM · edited Sun, 08 December 2024 at 12:26 PM

I'm sure this has probably been brought up already (I think I brought it up once actually but under a different guise) but what's the deal with ecosystems deleting when you perform certain functions.  I think the first time I encountered this was when I tried to undo something unrelated to the ecosystem (moving on object, etc.) and for some reason my ecosystems deleted.  Happens every time, so I basically can never undo anything.  Now, however, it also seems to do it if I change the offset from surface.  I have to go through this rediculous song and dance of saving and restarting to make sure it doesnt delete, and even then it doesnt always work.  And I refer to saving and restarting as a song and dance because, due to the size of the file, it takes a good five mintues each time....

And I've also noticed that when I duplicate a terrain and delete its existing ecosystem, it also deletes the ecosystem of the original.  I'm so fed up with this.  I hate coming on here and ranting angrilly but I cant help it.  Am I the only one suffering from this?  Am I going to have to once again uninstall and reinstall?  I really hope that they're working on this and have a new patch soon because I'm going out of my mind over it.

Again, I apologize for the angry tone of this message, but I've been dealing with this for nearly three hours now trying to simply work on my ecosystems.  This shouldnt be this difficult....

Probably should clarify that I'm using Vue 7 infinite....

Sorry for all the problems you are having, I tried this out in Vue 7 Complete, and if I create a terrain and add an ecosystem, then duplicate that terrain, and reset the material on the duplicated terrain, the original ecosystem still stays intact, however, if I 'clear' the ecosystem on the duplicated terrain then yes it clears the ecosystem on the original terrain, this is in my view odd behaviour, and yet something else that seems to require a 'workaround'.

That's what happens for me too, if I change the texture and simply reload the same ecosystem it's fine, but if I delete it it deletes them all.....

I had a similar problem (Vue 7 Inf). I created a light panel and because an EcoSystem was the last material I'd use, Vue asked me if I wanted to populate the light panel. When I answered no, the terrain with the EcoSystem had the EcoSystem deleted and I had to start from scratch.

I've had quite a few instances where I lost my EcoSystem population, but can't give details at the moment. All very annoying.  :-(

That's the biggest problem, there are so many ways this happens....e-on really better be addressing this......

I have this happen on odd occasions too but I can't remember what I did that caused it.

Has anyone raised a ticket at e-on about this ?

The best workaround until it's fixed which is what I do on complicated ecosystems is to SAVE your ecosystem material before you do something else.  Then if it does go poof, just reload it 😄

Until now, I only found one situation where ecosystems instances are deleted: if the instances were eco-painted and if I "undo" any operation. Due to my workflow, this isn't very problematic for me. I very rarely eco-paint, I prefer the use of distribution maps. And if I eco-painted something, I know I can not undo anything... :-) That's annoying but not too problematic (I save before every major operation).

Frank, regarding your long file open and close times. Are you sure you don't have the option "compressed" on? Check it out in the save dialog. Even for very heavy ecosystems, the maximum open or close time I have is one minute or so. But, with compressed on, it's 5 minutes or more.

I reported the eco-clearing on undo bug on 7complete and was told they fixed it  and it will be in a future release. I dont know if the other versions of the bug.

A new release just came out and may have fixed it.
