Poser is not yet dead and don't count it out yet. I use both Poser and Daz Studio and I know there are things I can and cannot do in either application that the other can.
I am a content creator and I feel that Daz Studio still has some growing up to do to match what can be done in poser for content.
You may not like the next statement so cover your eyes.

Use what ever makes you happy and let the others do the same.
I use both as well (no that is a lie, I use Poser only for Vue -export) and I do have my preferences, but when I look at a picture, there are many other things I do before asking the question: What did the artist use to make this image?
Just for some stuff to think about, I really would like to see here a "3D-art" gallery, open for all 3D images, nothing put into boxes, just to let the viewer look at an image without knowing what program has been used, to really see and appreciate (or maybe not) the work.
Ive been doing alot of D/S research, decided to load it up with plugins rather than buy Poser 7 upgrade....I havent read about any kind of Studio pro in any forum or ad over at Daz and Ive spent alot of time there lately ..and also version 3 ? there was just an update to version 2, but theres not talk about a release of a version 3 any time soon at all....however i have read that SmithMicro which bought out Poser 7 is not a good company for upgrades or software longevity!
My take on Studio Pro. In order for DAZ to provide more of the advance options (volumetric lighting, procedural texture,...) they need to access more of the 3Delight engines features. In order to access those features they need to pay for a better license agreement. In order not to lose money they need to pass that cost onto the customer. Again just my personal best guess for a Pro version. Also there has been some talk of the Pro version possibly being 64 bit.
For the moment little do we know, but there "should" be volumetrics in DS 3, if you read beneath the lines in the DAZ developper forum.
For the rest, we can only hope the best, but I think in general Version 3 will be a big step into the future, adding some ssential possibilities that DS 2 is lacking.
Till the release, we can only wait and see (and dream ^_^).
Ellir- the developer of the Bryce water shaders dropped a line in a forum yesterday the she is currently working on a volumetrics material translation from Bryce to D/S(current version). The water shaders include the actual bryce shader engine, I expect big results from the volumetric material in D/S.

Ive read that forum for a 2nd time now and all that is stated is the possibility or pros and cons of developing a pay for version of D/S..I already have alot of plugins that would make up the pro version plus 3d coat for 3d painting and texture baking....there would have to be dramatic changes to the core system for me to bite but then that would make all of my plugins obsolete (im not the only one with this opinion). ..I didnt see anything that says D/S 3 or pro will be released on --2010 or something..and all the new features are this and that. Its a think tank forum of the possabilities if it were to happen.
I just got DAZ when I bought Bryce 6, and I have to say, as far as package quality and ease of use, poser wins hands down over daz, so far. Just my first impression.

That is ok with me, there are people who feel more at ease with Poser, although I tend to avoid those peopple. ^_^ No, just kidding.
Just try to use DS a bit more and you will see that at least for placing the lights it will be far easier, since you can look through the lights to place it at the point.

I agree Peter. Up until this past Fall I was reluctant to even delve into D|S as I was fairly comfortable with Poser. Changed my mind because I'm an even longer user of Bryce and D|S is a good bridge between the two for content.
The one thing I always hated in Poser was lighting. I don't love it in D|S either . . . yet, but as you mentioned, being able to look through the lights and see where each of them are actually aimed does help.

Wow I can pick a hand full of things I don't like about Poser. But don't get me wrong I admit Poser is a more comprehensive package than D|S (without plugins).
I'm a hobbyist so price and short/shallow learning curve are most important. I started with D|S 1.8 because it was free. I never felt I had to read the D|S manual on how to use it. I bought Poser 7 only recently (on special price deal). I HAD to read the Poser manual.
My first impression of Poser was equivalent to the same first impression I had many many years ago being forced by job change to go from an Apple Mac with mouse to a IBM compatible running MS-DOS with no mouse. Nuff said.
I hope DAZ keeps developing D|S. Keeping it Poser compatible is good but don't integrate it with Poser....ever. Also I love D|S plugin system. You only buy what you need when you need it. As my skills develop so do too my requirement for plugins to expand D|S versatility.

The modular structure is why I chose to switch from Poser to D/S. You can get only what you will use, or load it up with every bell and whistle possible. Plus the customer service over at smith micro really pushed me to find an alternative.
Because DAZ Studio still doesn't have all the functionality that Poser does and there are a whole lot more content creators who use Poser than who use Studio.
Don't get me wrong, I've used Studio since Alpha 1 but it's not my platform of choice for content creation because of my use of shader nodes in Poser that aren't supported in Studio without a 3rd party program.

I recently tried to add bones for my very first time.
I found it easier to create new bones in Poser 7 rather than D|S 2.
I found it easier to adjust the bones in D|S 2 rather than Poser 7.
So I was constantly saving and jumping between the two programs.
I felt disappointed by Daz that they made the creation of new bone in D|S a script type environment rather than a visual one like Poser. The strength of D|S is that it's very visual for a lot of things but I have to wonder why Daz took this strange rather backward step for bone creation.
Remember that bone creation, except for body handles, requires editing the basic OBJ so you can't readily do the job in place anyway (POser does, of course, have the grouping tool). Also remember that you can copy from the selected figure into Skeleton Setup, make changes and paste back into the scene. I like the SS approach, but I'm mainly working on props where the bones aren't necessarily attached in a stick-figure like way as they are for organics and clothes.
