excellent all :) That was a fun one. I spent a lot of time on different ideas and it made me think a lot about how to make things work in bryce. It made my mind grow a bit and I learned some stuff. so let's do another one! :)

Grats Quest, now, hurry up and get us your idea! :P hehe

Congratulations to Quest and grafikeer, and also to all the participants.

A big thankyou to everyone that takes the time to vote, especially to the ones that haven't participated because their interest is very appreciated, at least by me.

Dhama here’s a scene break down of all the different primitives and how it all came together including a deleted terrain rat I intended to use but after some deliberation decided that it would be best not to introduce the Earthen vermin to a terraformer on a foreign planet.

And....

Quest ( ) posted Wed, 04 March 2009 at 6:26 PM · edited Wed, 04 March 2009 at 6:29 PM

Thank you all! Congratulations to Grafikeer and Jrcejaspuido. And all the other entrants for their inspiring works.

As for our next challenge I was originally thinking about paying homage to Chesley Bonestell one of the first artists to depict space exploration. You can read about him here:

http://www.nmspacemuseum.org/halloffame/detail.php?id=97

and see some of his work here:

http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS291US291&q=Chesley+Bonestell&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=x9WtSb3lLYGCtwev6oGEBg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title&ei=2dWtSZ7ZHZDWnQeLotiNBg&gbv=2

But I didn’t want to be limited just to outer space art so I’m thinking a combination space art and sci-fi/fantasy futuristic landscape/cityscape art, lots of room to play around with here.

As for rules…yuk! Absolutely no restrictions on the software here. Everything goes! All that Bryce can muster and then some. Ultimately, the final render must be done in Bryce. It can be postworked but all postwork must be noted specifically. You can import models and textures from outside programs but you must specify the sources. If the sources come from artists other than yourself, they must be given credit. In essence, you must explain how the image was created.

To show you what I mean and also to inspire view these images:

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS291US291&q=sci+fi+landscape+&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Zw-vSbm2OdLjtgfF3tn9BQ&oi=property_suggestions&resnum=0&ct=property-revision&cd=1&ei=8w-vSarnLNvFmQfyxJX5BQ&gbv=2

I hope I covered all. If I didn’t, I’m sure someone will remind me. Good luck to all and have fun!

Hehehe...Weezerhopw, I see you deleted your Carrera screengrab! OK, so it's a secret, I understand!

Anyway, here's another web site gallery which contains some very talented artists in this genre which might be helpful or inspiring. Have a look see thru the galleries. Please enjoy!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that when you get down to the "spacejetter's" link, there you will find tutorials and models geared towards Bryce.

Sounds like a great idea. Thank you, Quest. Give me a couple of days and I'll have the challenge page up and running.

BTW, do you have a deadline in mind?  This last one was 2 months long. Your call.

Well, didn’t realize the time factor. I always thought our challenges were but one month long but since we’re breaking the barrier here why not give the “kids” two months to get their act together? Eh…if that’s alright by you Sir Cardinal?

Quest, we did have a discussion last year about having challenges spread over two months. Can't remember what the concensus was though. But 2 months works for me.

Thanks for posting those screenies Quest, I really was interested in how you did the water ripples and dripping water. Will use that technique myself. Thanks. 🆒

Dhama, my pleasure! Here’s some screens depicting only the drips and ripple detail.

Quest ( ) posted Thu, 05 March 2009 at 4:50 PM · edited Thu, 05 March 2009 at 4:51 PM

file_425518.jpg

For the ripple I created a height map in Photoshop. The original height map was 1024 X 1024. I then brought that height map into the bryce terrain editor and adjusted it for height.

dhama ( ) posted Thu, 05 March 2009 at 5:07 PM

Excellent thanks for that Quest, appreciated to insight.. never thought of using terrains like that. I'm glad people are using terrain for more than just terrains though. 🆒

Just one more question, what mat did you use for the water? that was also stunning.

Quest ( ) posted Thu, 05 March 2009 at 5:30 PM

file_425523.jpg

Dhama, for the drip I just pasted the texture you see above created in Photoshop (B/W used Dissolve brush and scatter option) onto the 2D Face. The texture was 512 x 512 so I stretched the 2D face from ceiling to water level and this is the effect I got.

For the water I wanted it to look toxic so I wanted a sickly green which I created in the Bryce material editor using the Caribbean Resort preset and tweaked the colors and some options.

dhama ( ) posted Fri, 06 March 2009 at 2:35 AM

That mat works very well in that lighting. You should consider turing this into a tutorial for other folk too. Thanks Quest.

airflamesred ( ) posted Fri, 06 March 2009 at 11:48 AM

And a fine theme you have selected there - this should bring out some big guns!

Dhama, Jrcejaspuido, 50parsec you’re quite welcome and thank you for saying so. At the moment I’m up to my ahhh…ears in tutorials. I’m writing another tutorial for a few members and I started but after 22 pages I wasn’t happy with it and had to re-think it. So I started writing it all over again. So I’m super saturated with the tutorial but I have an obligation to see it through. Every night I write a few pages and right now I’m up to 18 pages in it. So no tutorials for a while.

Also, I’ve been made aware that people are actually trying out these techniques and I’m afraid that if you’re just starting out you might be a little confused and frustrated right about now because I didn’t fill in the blank spots on the water drips. So stop pulling out your hair. The problem is that I’ve been here so long that I think everyone understands the technique instinctively. This of course doesn’t take into account the new Brycers who are just learning. For that I apologize. Here is the missing part of the puzzle.

You’ve created your water drip in whatever 2D image editor and you’ve managed to bring it into the Bryce 2D library. You then plastered it onto your 2D face and…and…and…you see the drips but you can’t see the background! The trick here is you must setup the texture for transparency. As far as transparency maps are concerned in Bryce…all that is black is transparent. All that is white…is opac. We need to place a bead using the same texture map in the transparency channel. I later altered these to meet my needs.

50parsecs ( ) posted Sat, 07 March 2009 at 3:23 AM

Great use for a pic object! Very effective. I think you've been very generous of your time in making these illustrated mini-tuts. This will keep on helping new and more advanced users of Bryce for a long time thanks to the Renderosity search function. I am familiar with using 2D pics with transparent alpha channels, but you gave me some new ideas on how I might use them more. Thanks again.
