Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 07 11:07 am)
I understand that some of your morphs were found in meshes sold without proper attention to the niceties of your license agreement. If so, don't you have a legal claim on the proceeds of said sale? If so, it's either worth collecting or not. If so, sue. If not, please reopen. Closing is punishing the toiling masses for the transgressions of a handful of conniving, unscrupulous, running dog lackeys of the exploitive class.
Gordon
Morph World closing may be punishing the masses for a selfish few but really, why should Traveller re-open. He closed Morph World once before because people were abusing his generosity and selling his morphs in characters without permission. He asked the community to continue with an old tradition and "give" characters freely, he also requested that his morphs NOT be sold in characters. All it would have taken is someone to ASK him, and as before he would most likely have said yes. But those few didn't. I'm sorry, I've been tempted in the past to pull all of my stuff, I know other people who have, and others who won't share their work because of exactly this sort of abuse. Traveller has obviously had enough. If he decides to open Morph World again, that's up to him, but I would not blame him at all if he stuck a finger up at the community and turned his back permanently. Again, the generosity of someone is taken for granted and abused just to make a few bucks. Well, too bad, those few will now have to do their own work, or fade into the obscurity they deserve. I see no reason why Traveller should re-open Morph World just to be abused by some greedy idiot who hasn't got an ounce of common decency in their bones. It is always the many who suffer at the hands of a few. Life is like that. Guess we'll all just have to learn to make our own morphs rather than taking advantage, neh? It is going to get worse, much worse before it gets better. Morph World is not the first, nor will it be the last. Kindness, generosity, care, all mean nothing in the modern market place where only "me me me" matters. Sorry if this sounds unsympathetic, but I don't blame Traveller at all for his decision, and perhaps this is the only way to get the message across that enough IS enough.
Hi, Of course, this will not get the message across that "enough is enough", it will not impact upon those using the morphs in commercial products at all. They already have the morphs and will continue to use them. It will impact only upon those doing free work and newcomers who downloaded morphs as they needed them for a picture. They belong to Traveler and it was his site. He has the right to close, however his aim is off. He shot the people who were doing the right thing and missed the wrongdoers entirely. Take care, Lee
Any chance he would open with a paid membership ? I for one would be willing to pay :)

I am glad that the site was there, because, it made me want to learn how to do my OWN morphs. Did any of you all who freely harvested morphs from that site, ever think, that perhaps, Traveller would have wanted you all to try and learn to do them, as opposed to just running up to his site for more, time and again? I am sorry that he became so disheartened with the poser community, that he felt the need to close up shop. That is sad. But, maybe, just maybe, there is a message in all this. How about, instead of moaning, etc...everyone run over to www.anim8or.com...grab that free modeller, and work with the morph tute that Steve Shanks has up on that site. I learned that way, and, it wasn't even that hard, once it "clicked". Well, just a thought. Somehow, if I use something made by someone else, it is just not as satisfying as making my own. I wish I could learn it all, in fact....Then, I could sign my name on something, and know it was 100% mine. Pop...pop...pop!!!
Ah, but Poppi, for some of us, no matter how hard we try, no matter how many times we follow the instructions in the tutorials, it just never "clicks" for us. (I've been trying to get the hang of the magnets tutorial since it was first posted and I still don't understand how to do it). When Traveler shut down his site before, I understood and supported his decision. When he removed the vicky and mike morphs from his site, I supported his decision (I didn't understand it because I didn't have the necessary information) and this time, I also support his decision. In fact, I wish I had a list of the offending works so that I could a) not buy any of them or b) delete any I may have already purchased. And THAT, my friends, is the TRUE way to get the message across. Don't buy the items with the unauthorized morphs. That is the only way to show the vendors in question that we as a community will not tolerate this sort of behavior. Today it's Traveler, who will it be tomorrow? Kate
Actually I think his idea of selling them with a license to use them is a great idea. That way they can be used legally, and he will get something for all his hard work. I appreciate you Traveler, and I don't blame you for closing your site. I'm surprised you kept it open for this long after the last time people used your stuff. Marque
Well yes, let's boycott the offending products. Oh wait. We don't know which ones they are do we? Does that mean ALL products then? Even the innocent ones? Or perhaps the whole marketplace and watch renderosity close? Or do we demand immediate disclosure of the guilty vendors so we can let the bloodthirsty members of this place have some fun with them. Not knocking you Kate because yes it is the only way. But how do you propose to identify them?
I am sooo sorry to see that site go. I tried once before to email him about one of his characters and he never answered me...not sure why. I am not offended though as he was very busy. I was on the morph mailing list when it was up and learned alot. I am like Kate tho...some things are just too hard for me to learn without someone over my shoulder telling what to do. I am not one of the ones who broke his license rules and I am very very sad to seem him go. If I knew someone was offering a product with these types of offenses, I would have NO PROBLEM boycotting it. There are so many great things offered that do follow the rules.
I've been debating sending an email to him asking him to repost his tutorials or if he'd send them to me so I could post them with FULL CREDIT TO HIM. I've learned so much from him. Most, if not all, of my morphs have dedications to them in the comments. I haven't made that many morphs as I'm still learning the modelling software, but the ones I have are free. I've even created a few freebies at the request of others. I'm just so concerned that he'll see it as someone else trying to take from him that I'm still trying to figure out how to word it, or if I should send it at all. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who would appreciate the tutorials to make morphs for others. I hope whoever screwed over Traveler gets exactly what they deserve, many times over.
What a great loss for the modeling world :( Renderosity is a delightful community for both professional- and budding artists. Unfortunately, RIP-OFF artists seem to distort the standard code of conduct. Your desicion to close down Morph World 2.0 is very sad news, but don't forget, thousands of MATURE and DECENT 'Posarians' will remember you and BOYCOTT any misuse of your morphs and other nifty creations. Best wishes to you.
"Not knocking you Kate because yes it is the only way. But how do you propose to identify them?" Well, Questor, that's the problem. I haven't a clue as to how to identify them other than requesting a list from Traveler (and as someone else said, that would lead to another "let's burn the witches" campaign and we truly don't need that). I'm told by some people that they can tell when a certain MT has been used, but darned if I know how they do it. And relying on that method would not only result in probably misidentifications, but it would also tarnish those items where permission HAD been sought and granted. So, I don't know how we could effectively boycott only the offending items, and since I can't say how to identify them, I can't really suggest anyone initiate this sort of sanction against the markets and vendors. I wish I COULD say for certain which ones were in violation, it would be so much easier. For now, the only thing I advocate is sending out the message that if we knew FOR CERTAIN which characters were violators that we would definitely put them on our personal blacklists. And that is what I am going to do. IF, and I stress if, I discover that an item is in violation of someone's usage agreement, I will not purchase it. And if I have already purchased it, I will delete it, replace it in any artwork I may have used it in, and send a "shame on you, you should know better than that" e-mail to the vendor in question. g But I will not condemn just on hearsay. Kate (who can write a really good "shame on you" letter when she puts her mind to it)
Ok - maybe it's time to repeat something I have said some time ago ...: First I won't believe it ... but it goes more and more in this direction ...: Poser is changing to BUSINESS !! And so all the problems are coming up that belongs to a business ... If money is involved - the generosity will go and also the good human behaviour ... this is SAD and AWFUL - but noone of us will change this. My doubt is that now more and more people are going to sell morphs ... I believe if I close my site more and more people will sell poses for a price that is unbearable ... I said it over at 3DCommune - I totally understand Traveller and I would be even more than angry if someone sells my free poses somewhere or giving them away without credit (yes, I know I made this error once ... but that's some time ago and I think I learned my lesson from that). So - in my eyes - what he did - was right and for myself it would be fair if the people who have stolen (yes - that's the right word - and I'm thinking a lot about it by using it) his work would be named (allthough I know it is hard to find real evidences ... but they can defence themselves then if they are thinking it was not stolen ... I don't know why - but (sorry for saying this) the whole community is changing to a business market - "today asking how to make textures - tomorrow selling it in the store". This IS annoying - and for all of you who are offended now by these words: "THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE IF EVERYONE WOULD ACT LIKE THAT" With the loss of Travellers site anotherone of those generosity-heroes is fallen ... and I'm very very sad for this fact ... and not for the fact I'll get no more morphs anymore ... Now it's up to you - your vendors who have done something wrong ... to apologize. But if you want it - well than you can have it ... OK - let's close all the free sites in the world - then YOU have to buy all this stuff - happy spending money !!!! "We once was a community - everybody helped the other - this community let me back (and I think this community don't regret that) and I was happy to be in this community". I don't think we lost all of this spirit - but we must fight for it Schlabber
What happened to Anton and Traveller is terrible. It was simply wrong. We as a community must begin to set a zero tolerance standard to this type of behaviour. It is not just their problem. It is OUR problem. As a community we must be willing to quickly voice our disapproval when these individuals are brought to our attention. We must be willing to boycott products or sites that conduct themselves in these manners. Schlabber, you bemoan what you perceive as the commercialization of Poser. But you ignore that Poser itself is a commercial product. It was not given away, you must purchase it. Curious Labs exists as a company to make a profit from selling their product. Nothing wrong with that is there? So why would is it so wrong for artist who legitimately and ethically creates within the 3D community to attempt to sell their creations? No one is being forced to purchase. There are those of us who are willing to purchase because we cannot duplicate what they are offering. Why should 3D artist be held to some "higher" moral standard then those who create with brush and pallet or with clay and tool. Painters and sculpters have been selling their creations for eons, yet in your eyes 3D graphic artists should not? Especially when the creation is created in, based upon, and used in software which themselves must be purchased? Helping each other and the free exchange of ideas and information as a community is great and should continue. But don't confuse it with people's desire to sell their works. As long as they conduct themselves with integrity, and honesty it shouldn't matter.
Probably because he's worried that if he brings the subject up and somebody gets hold of a couple names there'll be a return to the hanging parties that have happened recently, something I doubt he would want to be associated with regardless of the reasons. Then again, who's to say he hasn't sent a list to someone? As for punishing the rest of "us" over a few. Well isn't that always the way? A few ruin it for the majority? Higher car insurance because of joy riders and thieves. Higher house insurance because of burglars. Armed police because of gun toting idiots with no social conscience? The masses are always punished for the actions of a few because essentially in the end it is the masses that encourages the few. Would people have used the morphs in characters for sale if there wasn't a feeding frenzy over new characters? Who's to blame? Those who have done the dirty on Traveller, or those who have unwittingly paid them to do it?
Hi Folks! I know I'm gonna push some buttons by saying this. . . What has come to pass is not only the commercialization of this online forum, as Rena predicted. What has also happened is what Schlabber has noted: as soon as a newbie learns enough to build a prop or texture, the result ends up in an online store. The ultimate consequence of all this is the "Microsofting" of digital art (and I use that term deliberately): a continually growing, broad range of products that run from fair to mediocre in quality. There's some really excellent stuff in the Store. But the bulk of it does not at least to me seem to be that distinctive. I supported the idea of an online store to save all my favorite forums, but honestly, I haven't bought anything from them. Reason? I'm waiting for this and the other stores to do what DAZ and BBay have done: hire a REAL PERSON to take orders live and offer customer service. When I have questions about my order I can talk to Sherry or Emily--and they have been very good to me. I'm willing to bet that the R-Store will take a more definitive stance against pirates and pilferers if they have to pay someone to take the complaints and that someone must listen to them as part of the job, as well as verify that all the components of a new product--morphs, geometries, textures-- are legal and properly credited. If the Poser forums must go commercial to survive then so be it. Let's take the next step and put in a real person that I can talk to when I make my order. Peter (Dr Zik)
heyas; point #1: more power to ya, trav. you're a fine, upstanding guy, a hard worker, and very generous. traveller has my full support. now, what i don't get.... back when trav pulled the millenium people morphs, some people hinted that it was because some millenium figures/characters whatever were being sold and had traveller's morphs in them. however, traveller clearly and emphatically stated that he DOES NOT MIND if his morphs are included in commercial products. now i dont recall if he specifically added the caveat that he didn't mind, IF they asked first, or not. but the general idea was that anybody could use them and have them in a character they give away or sell or whatever. and i thought this was very progressive and open, and was recently thinking, about some morphs i made: 'now should i restrict these to not be used in commercial characters, or have them as a sort of open license, like morph world does?' so the entire morph world closure has got me baffled. i mean it's not that he can't change his mind; but last i heard he was okay with morphs in characters for sale, and now he isn't. so i dunno. i'm confoozed.
I understand why Trav did this and I am sure he will not be the last. For those of you who want to know just how bad the stealing has gotten, just check out the free textures here. You will find Stalle, Happyworld and even the original Vicky texture with small changes made to them and the originators name erased. Daz has not acted on the giveing away of there Vicky texture yet (remember you had to buy this one)but it is just a small sample of people takeing other peoples work and calling it there own. The Forums is changeing. No going back now. Ignorance is no excuse, if you edit or add to a downloaded texture or mesh and call it an "Original" by you then you are adding to the problem. Paul Hafeli
Bloodsong .. It was simply a thing that he was okay with it if asked. That is what I remember it as. But I wasn't selling stuff so didn't look too close. And Paul ... I have noticed that too. Notice Daz textures all over the place with small changes. See bits that are very much so Michael's texture out there and the Vicki's are there too. It is really a shame.
Dr Zik, I've purchased 3D items from Bbay, Renderosity, and Zygote; and Renderosity DOES have a live person you can call and talk to (Yvette at Bondware). I have a problem with my connection timing out during long downloads, and it would have been maddening to have dealt with this without talking to a real person in resetting my downloads for problem files. The three major brokers for Poser props and figures have wonderful customer support, and I'm happy with my experiences with all of them.
