Subject: Poser trueSpace users: Get your 'final' copys, MS is terminating the app

read the "Letter from the Founder"

Microsoft is ending the life of trueSpace. I guess "free" was too high a price.

thanks for the heads up, just downloaded.
havent used truespace since version5...

I Don't see the letter on Calagari's site but I found an excerpt here:

Odd that's the only link a Google search turns up on web or news even if it's just been announced.

does trueSpace have soft-body collision detection and deformation?

Sad. TS4.2 was my first ever 3d app. Never really got on with the last free version but then I didn't have time to dedicate to it. Sorry to see it disappear altogether though.

Theres some hints that it may reappear as part of something else microsoft is working on .
As a stand-alone app though its gone .

It seems that several new sites have been created to keep the Truespace community going in the abscence of the caligari website.

bagginsbill ( ) posted Thu, 21 May 2009 at 1:51 PM

I tried playing with it for a while after it became free. It crashed on me a lot, and I just couldn't get my head wrapped around the interface. I guess I'm too warped by Poser.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Not surprising
as it was an old outdated program.

"yay troll's arrived.

OK bye
just my opinion im very sorry you feel the need to flee the thread like some bitter ex-wife with a silly grudge
because of one opinion about One program in a market saturated with 3D programs at every level.
With the free carrara 6 and other free full programs
MS made a decision not to offer it anymore.... hey its typical MS.

applications come and go but there is usually something in the market thats a viable alternative these days.

It has been around for a long time, but it wasn't outdated at all. While it's not C4D, Maya or LW, it still does a good job, giving you quite some 3D power for a great price..... Once you get used to the interface you can do some amazing things with it. When I used it for game design, it gave me some excellent features needed in modern game design that still to this day both C4D and LW lack.

To say it's outdated clearly shows you haven't really used it.

Talk about outdated...... even with all the stuff DAZ is adding (which isn't really helping Carrara along) the newest version compared to it's competition is hopelessly outdated.

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

TS has been steadily upgraded by Caligari, so I wouldn't call it outdated. More work on it than Carrara for sure. Carrara is basically the same as when it was called Ray Dream.

Truespace surely isn't the easiest software package to learn, but I would not call it outdated. The last version has the disadvantage that it's a hybrid between the new and the old Truespace - which does not help learning it.

A sad thing that Microsoft just bought it to slaughter it.

you have to admit, no matter how hard it is to use (I had about 3 versions; from the ancient 'qbert' interface, to 6 or 7, I think...;) it's easier to figure out than Blender...;)

btw - Free Carrara 6? Haven't gone into details, but a quick search shows the legal version isn't free, and the free versions aren't legal...;)

Bummer! I've been slowly trying to learn it. Well, mayhap it'll still come in handy from time to time.

It's still working. Most probably there won't be updates, but the SDK was published IIRC, and the toolset is pretty complete. If you want a better package and dislike Blender, there is a price - and not a small one.

Carrara 6 Pro is being given away, with a legal serial, on several CG magazines.
It is also on a new book for Daz Studio, along with Hexagon 2.5 plus tons of other stuff, for under $20 at DAZ. The book is at Amazon as well.

Just a guess here, but by "outdated" I think he might have meant its ui and workflow.
Used to be there was no real "industry standard", but slowly over time industry standards have emerged in all programs, not just 3D.
If you know how to model in 3D... That is, if you know the tools in general, the common terms, the typical functions, the "standard" icons and labels, you should be able to easily make a transition from one app to another.
But for example, if you're modeling in Max, Maya, Lightwave, Modo, and so on and suddenly find yourself in Truespace, you're going to be lost and not be able to get much done until you learn the interface itself and then all the things integral to Truespace.
So in other words, a program that can't deliver that ease of transition to you is, more or less, outdated.

I don't think Microsoft bought it to slaughter it. I think Microsoft has something planned and wanted its code for something else.
