Subject: Need someone with Vue 7.5 xStream to try some controls for me

Paula Sanders ( ) posted Mon, 01 June 2009 at 5:44 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 3:39 PM

I cannot seem to create spherical terrains. I use the procedural terrain. Check the box in Options for spherical terrain and make sure the display says spherical. There is no difference. The terrain stays the same. I am wondering if I am missing anything. I habe tried it with all types of terrains.

I would appreciate someone trying this and letting me know if it works or doesn't. If it does, what am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Hello!

I have infinite, not xstream, but just in case: Did you try to zoom out very far? The effect can be quite subtle depending on the size settings. If it worked  and you move the camera for example 100km up, you should see the horizon curve and the side view should also show a curve in the terrain.

By the way: You do need to use an infinite terrain or ground plane for this.

You could also activate the "Planet terrain" setting. In this case the terrain will form a complete sphere.

Sorry if you already knew this, but it confused me initially.

Ciao

With everything I try there is no indication of anything spherical. I know from others it works in Vue 7.5 Infinite. I am using Vue 7.5 xStream as a standalone.  Please, someone with xStream, let me know if it will work when xStream is used as a standalone.

Thanks.

Try this and let us know if it worked:
1- Open Vue and don't make any other change
2- File -> Options -> Units & Coordinates -> Enable Spherical Scene -> Use planetary terrains
3- Click on yes on the question that pops up
4- Change the "scene radius" to, say, 10Km
5- Click ok
6- In the 4 quadrants view, click on the "frame all" button, so that you can see all the world.
7- You should see a 10Km sphere as your world.

Or simply load the "Planet e-on" sample scene. It works fine here in 7.5 xSt build 42975

Thank you, Rutra and Bruno. It's 5 am but I awoke and couldn't sleep pondering this. Both your directions got me going. I'll play some more tomorrow, but I was able to createand change how the terrain looked.

One thing I wasn't using was frame all. I might have more questions tomorrow.

Now back to sleep, I hope.

Thanks again

Sweet dreams, Paula.

If you weren't using "frame all", maybe you already had a spherical planetary terrain but you didn't know it. :-)
With the default radius (6400Km), there's no visible difference in the main camera view, everything looks exactly the same. As in real world, of course, because that's more or less the real radius of Earth. When you raise the camera a few kilometers above the ground, you'll start to see the roundness of the planet. Just like in real world. It's very cool, my favorite feature of 7.5.

I hope you had some nice Vue dreams... :-)

I think that must have been the case. Once I used frame-all, it was there. I just returned about an hour ago and have been playing with the function. It all works. Thank you so much. I don't think I would have realized what the problem was otherwise.
