Subject: advice on Poser Pro purchase

vxg139 ( ) posted Sat, 31 January 2009 at 10:24 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 8:03 PM

Hi,

Before purchasing a 64 bit PC (+ Poser Pro) I wanted to check with you guys and confirm that Poser Pro rendiering features would access extra RAMs....

Right now I have a Dell TM2 Due CPU w/3.16 GHZ clock speed, 1GM Graphic driver + 4 GB RAM..... Howver my operating system is 32-bit which means rendering of complex images in a single run is a real challange..... (wtinh the "FFrender.exe" reaching its upper limit as high res. textures get loaded into the memory)...
so back to my question.... would you guys recommend getting a 64 bit PC? and if so, how far can I go with the RAM 6 GB, 8GB or 12 GB?

FYI, my typical poser files are of the order or 150 MB (with lots of figures + high res. textures)...

Thank yo ufor any advice you guys might be able to provide... :c)

Cheers

I am using Poser 7 pro  on a PC using VIsta 64 bits edition and 8 gig ram
Poser pro is still a 32 bits soft using 64 bits only when you render in background (rendering in 64 bits)
I have also noted that i didn't have not enough memory warning with Poser since i used it with 64 bits os and 8 gigs ram

A 64 bit PC is HIGHLY recommended. Go for a quad core.

At this time, Intel is ahead of AMD, so I'd advise to go for an Intel CPU.
You've got two choices: the Socket 775 or the newers Socket 1366 CPUs (and mainboards).

The Q series of CPUs goes into Socket 775 mainboards. Most socket 775 mainboards can hold 8 GB max, some only 4 GB, a very few can hold 16 GB.. Machines based on a Qxxx are quite affordable, you can have one with a lot of disk, a powerful graphics card, 8 GB of RAM an a nice PSU/system case for less than $800.

The i7 series of CPUs goes into Socket 1366. Most Socket 1366 mainboards can hold 12 GB, some can hold 24 GB. It uses triple-channel DDR3, so you should install 3 memory modules at a time.
The cheapest i7 CPU is competitively priced, but the 1366 mainboards are still expensive - the price tag of an average 1366 board is 3 times as high as the price tag of an average 775 mainboard.
DDR3 RAM is still a tad more expensive than DDR2, but the differences are getting smaller.

FFRender64 and RAM: The Firefly renderer in Poser Pro is a true 64 bit application, which means it can use up to 128 GB of address space. I've been able to render scenes that took close to 8 GB during render: multiple figures with hires textures and strand based hair.

My scenes often grow to 200-300 MB, excluding texture maps, so those 150 MB should render just fine.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

My new rig:

Intel Core i7 940 overclocked to 3.06GHz (should go a little higher), 12Gb RAM.

Poser Pro zips along at a fair clip, though the crappy way Firefly carves up the scene for rendering means that there's always a l-o-n-g wait for that last bit to render.

Probably the best thing is that you can send your render off to the Queue Manager and carry on working on the same / another scene.

Sory to tell you but Poser7 or Poser Pro doesn`t use more then 2gb of ram and I am talking about the " Max Bucket Size " , there are no diff. between 200 or up to 800 Max Bucket size whatever Poser version or whatever 32 or 64 bit sistem. Anyway, youre processor rules, I have something much, much more worse than your. Install 64bit for VUE7, vue7 use how many ram you have.

miste1982 - that needs some clarification.

The external FFRender of Poser Pro is full 64 bit - on a 64 bit OS of course. If you're running a 32 bit OS, you're limited to what the OS can give the application.
That 2 GB max, is that caused by your operating system?

Second, only the EXTERNAL render engine is full 64 bits. Poser Pro itself, plus the INTERNAL render engine, are LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE 32 bit applications, they can use up to 4 GB on a 64 bit OS, up to 3 GB on WinXP with the /3GB boot switch, and up to 2 GB on WinXP standard or Vista32.

about a month ago, I did go ahead and purchased the Dell XPS 64 bit w/24 GB RAM + 1 GB ATI graphic card..... and poser appears to work fine (w/ multiple morph loaded V3, A3 and M3 characters + high res. textures in the same scene)....

The 64 bit render engine is real sweet... significantly faster than the 32 bit counterpart... the difference is like night and day!

Judging from the performance of the 64 bit render engine, I hope that one day (soon) Smith Co would announce the release of "64 bit" Poser program!

If you can, get XP 64... I have seen too many quirky issues with Vista in general and Vista 64 specifically that when I built my new system earlier this year, I opted for XP 64.

These issues are not limited to Poser or Graphic Software specifically, but most programs I have used (I have two Vista Systems.. both are the only machines I ever really truly thought about unplugging and throwing on the Driveway in frustration. Realize I use to have a Mil Ed Windows Machine and Windows 3.1 (not 3.11) and neither of those ever had me thinking of doing that!)

Ouch!! I got the vista 64 bit ultimate version! so far Poser has crashed once.....are there special areas that I need to be aware of?

Make sure your Drivers are actually 64 Bit Versions and that you have the latest.

NOTE: Some Video Cards do not have Vista 64 Bit Drivers, so they use the 32 Bit Driver or the XP 64 Driver.

Be aware that Vista puts modifications to the Programs in the Virtual Store. This could cause Permission Issues (Virtual Store is a System Folder in the User Account Folder) Sometimes moving these files to the Program Folder will fix odd issues, but not always.

If you install in the Admin Account (not as Admin. Admin Account is not the same as a User Account with Admin Privilages. NOTE: This is not recommended by MS, but some people do this and it seems to create some weird issues that can only be resolved by a complete reinstallation of the OS.

I always install in Diagnostic Mode to avoid issues with Vista. I also Serialize and install Updates

For Poser, learn where all the Preferences reside and keep notes to those locations should you need to delete them. (They are all over the place in Vista!)

Render Separate Processes or Background Renderer in Poser Pro to take advantage of the 64 Bit Renderer.

Learn to use Gamma Correction (That is for you BB!)

Do not turn off Shadows (That is for everyone else that comments on all the Gallery Images with no Shadows)

Do the Tutorials.. they may seem lame but they will show you tools you may forget that are in Poser and they also will help you understand the Workflow options. (that is for me!)

Render in Final Mode, not Draft...
