Subject: UV mapping, how do you do it?

cujoe_da_man ( ) posted Mon, 29 June 2009 at 11:48 AM · edited Sun, 05 January 2025 at 4:19 PM

I recently grabbed a freebie car and wanted to do some custom texture work on it, but found that it has no UV map of any kind, is there a way to add one?  I tried to use UV mapper, but while it can give me a map, I can't apply it to the car

You have to resave the OBJ you mapped in UVM.  The mapping wil apply to it, not the original OBJ.  Hope this helps.

hmm, still same problem... I noticed the model came with its own textures, but those don't seem to work either

Yes, you have to load the obj you want into UVMapper, make the mapping the way you want it and resave the obj. Of course if you resave over the original, the new prop will have your mapping. If you want separate material zones, you'll have to set them up as such, which I think can only be done in the pro version. I haven't checked tho, so I may be wrong. It's been a long time since I've used the free verson :o).

Then you saved over the original model. Your best bet (if you want to use both mappings) is to save the obj file you made the map for with a different name and import THAT into your program.

I actually deleted everything and reloaded the original model, maybe poser just doesn't like this particular file, grr

If you lead me to the free prop, I'll check it out for you. Do you use Poser 7? I also have 6 installed on my machine and can check it there too.

yep, poser 7

here's the link, the 2009 Camaro.  maybe it's just not compatible with Poser, but I thought all UV mapping was universal for all programs, but this isn't the first time I've done this either, that's what has my stumped

Alright then :o).

I'll give it a looksee and let you know!

awesome, thanks

What I'm finding so far (and I'm not done with it yet), is that most of this car has no textures. The material zones are there, but only some have an actual texture map.

As for UV Mapper, I can see the groups (which correspond to the materials), but I cannot assign them to a material because there are no uvs. I'm going to continue with it further - it's tricky because it's in French, so I have to translate the different parts...LOL.

I'm gonna keep at it for awhile :o)

yeah, that's the problem I had, I could create a new UV file, bur for whatever reason I couldn't attach any actual textures to it.  Even loading the original file in Poser and selecting the textures by hand, they only show up black

cujoe_da_man ( ) posted Mon, 29 June 2009 at 12:59 PM

ok, I think I have it figured out, it looks like it's treating the entire car as one big texture group and I'm trying to select certain parts only, guess I'll have to work around that

You're better off using Poser's shaders for most of the parts anyway. I'm still working on the other parts :o).

I posted a few screen-shots of mapping a basic model in Wings3d.

In case it's helpful-
