Subject: Can the eyelid cast a shadow on the Iris?

hemi4261 ( ) posted Wed, 08 July 2009 at 10:35 AM · edited Thu, 25 July 2024 at 2:34 AM

Hi, I have a question regarding V4 eyes and shadows. When I have an infinite light with raytraced shadows in the correct angle (say, x-rotate -30 degrees), shouldn't the eyelid cast a shadow on the Iris map? I have tried adjusting the Min shading rate and cast shadows is of course enabled, but I don't get this to work. Any idea?

What is Shadow Min Bias set to?  Also when lighting for indoors, you probably shouldn't use Infinite type lights, they're really just for simulating "coherent" light sources like the Sun.  Spotlights are more appropriate.

Thank you for the fast reply, shadow min bias was set to 0.8
About the infinite light: I assumend this would simulate something like "parallel" light rays from a very distant source, so this would give nice shadows...

As long as you're trying to simulate sunlight that's well and good :)

Set Shadow Min Bias to .1 or a bit smaller and see if you get your eyelid shadows.  Be aware this makes render time go up.

Thank you pjz, that did the job. In case somebody else is interested, here's a comparison. In my opinion the right looks a lot more realistic.

Yep that's a big improvement.

IMHO, in the right side image the eyes look better, but the shadows on the lower eyelids are way too strong, and way too sharp.

Is there a way just to reduce the shadows of the eyelashes?
It's a very dense transmap, though.

The best ways would be to render with area shadows and global illumination, but a more reasonable alternative (for now) is to get some blur into the shadows and use fill light(s).
