Subject: Toucan's roses

So here's the thing...

I wanted a peace rose. So I downloaded Toucan's rose models to use as Poser props because they're some of the nicest roses I've found. I remapped them and added separate materials so that both of his models (the red rose and white rose) will accept the same texture maps.

I hope there's interest for this. I plan on making a bunch of rose colors and since I can't give you the model (you'll need to download and convert to .obj from .3ds yourself), I'll give full instructions and the new uv files (and of course the texture maps). They'll be up on my site. I'll have them done shortly.

very nice

Thanks for your effort, they do look good.

Just a thought - will a model converted from 3DS to OBJ always take the same UVS remapping? I can't convince myself that it will, since there are many valid ways to do the conversion, and they won't necessarily end up with the same OBJ format. Perhaps if you specify which convertor you used, then everyone can be sure to use the same method.

They should Engilsh Bob, if I also give the uvs files and have folks apply those uvs in UV Mapper ;). That shoud give the materials as well as the mapping placement.

I still use Crossroads to convert files, and it's still available at the link.

What I meant was, that UVMapper will expect the OBJ file to be in the same format as yours was. There are, quite possibly, an infinite number of OBJ files which will result in the same apparent mesh object... If the texture coordinate list, or the facet list, is ordered differently, I suspect that a UVS file will no longer work. In that case, you couldn't just say "download such-and-such 3DS file, convert it to OBJ, and then apply my UVSes" because the conversion to OBJ isn't under your control.

But saying "use Crossroads to convert 3DS to OBJ" should be fine. :) Thanks for the Crossroads link - my old one had gone dead, and I couldn't find a new one at the time.

It was hard to find THAT link to Crossroads...LOL. I guess that university still finds it useful ;o). I was also glad that even though the program is quite old, and I'm running Vista, that the program still works ;o).

Thanks for the advice English Bob! I'll let them know to use Crossroads and UVMapper ;o).

Did you contact Toucan about what you are doing? He might allow redistribution of your modifications with the OBJ file, the way I read the terms on the page you link.

LaurieA ( ) posted Tue, 21 July 2009 at 4:06 PM

Ya know, I haven't wywulf. Maybe I should do that. It's just that I don't much like distributing someone else models, even if they're pretty free with the license.

Does Toucan speak English does anyone know?

japanese would be preferred.  other option: see if one can use rte to encode the 3ds file as source and the re-mapped object as target or output.  I can't discuss the rte algorithm, but in theory it should work.

I have a strong suspicion that Toucan would easisly agree for distribution of converted and remapped rose models. You see, there already exist a pack of his plants converted to Poser props - it was released through Rendo freestuff area, although I can't find it anywhere and the readme doesn't state who did all the converting job (Ricabri IIRC, but can't be 100% sure). But the readme states two other important things: that Toucan-san communicates through translating software (so can understand English e-mails) and that he says "When a lot of people use my flower, I am glad". I'd say write him, nothing to lose, but with positive answer you may save some people grief with using apps they're not familiar with and save yourself problems with packaging that stuff for legal redistribution ;)

I agree. I was gonna shoot him an email later this evening, as soon as I render the new maps so he can see what I'm going to do with them ;o).

Thanks everybody!

I'm thinking this means yes, I have permission? Lets hope so...LOL.

Hello Allen.

Subject: About your rose models (rose red and rose white)

Good day sir,

I'm sorry I cannot write to you in Japanese. I hope that you will be able to understand my words :o).

My name is Laurie Allen and I am a member of Renderosity and use Poser 7. I love your .3ds rose models because I think that they are the prettiest and most realistic one's I've been able to find.

I've converted them to .obj and remapped each one to take the same textures and I've made a lot of textures for them. Textures that I would like to share with the rest of the Poser community for free. I have attached an image of two of the textures so that you can see it (I made 12 textures in total).

However, it would be very confusing for most people if I tell them how to first convert the objects to .obj format, apply new uvs and then import into Poser and apply the new textures and morphs.

Would it be possible then, that I may distribute the model files as finished object props for Poser? I'm giving my morphs and textures away for free and will not be making any money at all from it. I'm just sharing what I made with other people, just as you have :o).

Thank you for your time and I hope that you have a beautiful day.

Kindest regards,

Laurie Allen
