Sorry to me he looks horrible.  I didn't think Dork looked good back in the Poser 4 days or even the Poser 4 ProPack days but lived with it until Daz Mike 2 came along.  There was no choice back then.

Today in 2009 to use a figure from so long ago with so many flaws to me would be unprofessional.  My clients would laugh at me to use one of those figures now.

I  Still use the "Dorkster"
from time to time but only because of his very low polycount and when I need a figure be animated in real time in full tracking mode for some generic demonstration purpose.

Actually, the reasons that you cite for disliking him, are THE very reasons that He's my male figure of choice!  He's got the best male physique around of ANY of the Poser figures!

(I'm in the process of remapping Mike 2, to take Mike 3 skin textures with out the need to UTC them, and frankly, Dork looks WAY better!

Yeah I do think the Dork could use better rigging but the mesh still looks fine to me.

When posing dork, or any other figure, the 1:@ rule should be observed.  Twist the neck 10 degrees, then twist the head 20 degrees.  Twist the forearm 10 degrees, then twist the hand 20 degrees.  DO not twist the neck 70 degrees and the head 0 degrees, etc.,  -nor visa-vesa!!!
The joints shouldn't warp if this rule is followed, (or shouldn't warp too much).
Nor hould one twist one limb one way, and its extension the exact opposite, -even in real life that'll produce a shattered bone.

That being said, Poser 4 came with default poses for those figures which exceed those limits and that's another reason why  canned poses suck!

It's been my experience that most canned poses, and especially those that came with Poser3-4 were created by people who really didn't understand how to pose these figures.  I came across the 1:2  rule (also known as: one third/ two thirds) while studying boning/rigging tutorials for figures in 3ds Max.  It's a wise rule of thumb, and can save a lot of grief.
After applying a canned pose, go back and check the limbs for anomalies: forearms should have zero side-to-side.  If they do, thien zero the dial, and then apply twist from the shoulder instead.
Same thing for shins: if side-to-side was applied, then zero it and apply twist to the thigh.
And remember, any forward and back, up and down motion of the arms, always starts with at least 10 degrees of same with the collars.  This c an be increased to 20-40 degrees of collar, depending on the extremeness of the final pose.

I made money doing commercial work with the P4 figures all through the Millennium 2 era... they were more flexible in many ways though I did use the old Millennium 2 Shazam for commercial stuff. Their was an old recipe for a few dial spins of the standard morphs that made Dork look like a nice looking human as opposed to Michael Foucault. I am so sad I lost my huge inventory of Morph World 2 morphs to a crash... I still use Dork regularly in my Morfman varient because he poses well, is masculine and can be scaled and morphed easily in to dissimilar characters. My complaint is the shoulders in most of his clothes.

Well, I wouldn't want to load my scene down with a ton of Michael 2's for background crowd movement when dork looks, at a distance, just fine. I have very large background crowds in my animations and so, the dork IS still very useful. Why would anyone want to use high poly background characters when you can barely make out the faces, anyway? That would be crazy. I recreated the Blob theater scene (the old version). Everything in that scene was an old, tired figure but you couldn't tell. The scene looked great.

I also attempted to recreate a scene from the "old" Rollerball movie. I didn't finish it because I got work (YAY). I will someday do so but the crowds looked fantastic. Guess what they are made of? P3 and P4 people. If you're a professional, and for some strange reason you're using Poser instead of a high end app to make your money then why would you throw away any tools. In our field, you never know what might end up being useful down the road. DP, I wouldn't put that football player up front but In the backfield or running after a high poly character... yes, with out a doubt. Or... as some have suggested... go ahead and use all high end characters and watch as your deadline gets pushed back a couple of weeks or you lose the job because you can't finish on time due to long render times.

Back them up, archive them but never throw away any of your tools... ever. One day, you might regret it.
