be able to download it?  I realise that demand is probably quite high but 35k per second? are you kidding me :)

What speeds are you getting? where are you in the world? is there one server in the US being hammered?

Who knows :)

John

PS in the slight hope that my work connection would be faster I am trying it there now, it's now helping much.

I guess I struck lucky in that I downloaded Poser 8 within minutes of its initial release. Even so... my max download speed for the 3 files was 170 kb sec when my line is capable of and generally gives me a download speed of 2 MB sec. The main Poser installation file took 1 hour and 7 minutes to download when it should/could have downloaded within a few minutes. The 2 content files took much, much longer.

My first 2 attempts at downloading the main file failed at 50% and 30%. The 3rd attempt was successful and the 2 content files downloaded at first attempt.

I am located in UK.

It seems crazy that an organisation as large as Smith Micro can not feed their customers with a faster service.

As has been suggested in other threads... it might have helped had they allowed interupted downloads to continue from where they failed, or... to have broken the files down into smaller chunks, especially the 2 larger content files.

I'm in Greece and yesterday I downloaded the P8 installer at about 45KB/Sec when I normally have 8MB.   Today I'm downloading the P8 Content at about 50-55 KB/Sec - needs another 7 hours or so!

Should I even bother with the Legacy Content?   I have Poser 4,5,6,7 so is there anything included in that download that I might not have?

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 3:42 AM

My Legacy Content and P8Content both took about 1 hour and 32 min each, for me and Installer took about 30 minutes.  I got it yesterday at 4:30 am EST.  Now that it is out and many are getting it, I am sure it will take longer......in about 3 days it should be faster.  That is how it was with P7, I remember, I opted for waiting the 3 days for that one.  Sharen

Like Ziggie, I took the plunge within minutes of the announcement by ratscloset; I got speeds of ~350k.

Hello,
it took me 12 hours for the contents zip, and I have a 16000 DSL connection.
It's a problem of their servers :-(.

Luckily, all files downloaded without any retries. Next thing I'll do is to burn a backup DVD.

Best regards,
   Michael

I downloaded  within a short time of the post here and got average speeds of 300, WA state.  So I'd say it's just the traffic that's slowing things down. But yes you would think that by allowing reconnects it would be better and faster for them as well. The idea being get people taken care of and off the lines.

Life is hard, but what a ride.

 **32Kbs  to a MAX of 70Kbs  **

REALLY!

3 attempts on the Poser8 Installer at roughly 2.5 hours each ALL FAILED to complete !

I can not imagine what the Content is going take.

I am on a T-1 Connect and have never run into this. I am guessing it is server demand on their end, or they have D/L rates dialed down for the initial wave of new purchases.

I have tried via, Opera, Safari and IE all with the same result. :(

Oh, just like being at home on  Dial Up :-/

ratscloset ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 7:32 AM

I contacted the Web Staff about the slow down that occurred last night and they are aware. I do not know what caused it other than demand. (Not sure if there was some equipment or some other aspect) Hopefully they can do something to relieve the slowdown. Please give them some time.

I do have a couple of tips when you go to reattempt...

Make sure you are not Scanning on Download
Do not use a Download Accelerator (these can be in ISP Software, Toolbars, etc...)
Clear your Download Cache before attempting the download again
Try renaming the File when prompted to Save (this sometimes bypasses a incomplete download that the system or a download manager may have. These can cause issues for the new attempt.)

Depending on where you live, time is also a consideration when there is a lot of demand...East Coast after 4 AM but before 7 AM is the lowest Web Activity in the US. That should help others.

well the 1st 5 times i tried to get the download it was at 17kb/sec

the next 4 times it sped up to 30kb

but the 9th 10th and 11th times it was smooth sailing at 60- 75kb/sec.

Been up for 24 hours now making sure to re-download everytime the server cut my connection. I forget the name of the error, but it came from the servers. Not an issue with MY internet connection.

Contact Support if you get any errors (include the Error Message and details) I was not aware users were getting error messages when the Download failed. This information will be needed by the Web Staff.

Anyone that has any problem with the download or store should also include their Operating System, Browser Version, and any Security Software Brand they are using along with any error message details. This information will help speed up locating and fixing any problems.

Hi all, been awhile.

I've bought P8.  The installer was pie.  Easy.  The content...well Qwest (being the root of all evil anyway) cut me off for the file being too large.  So I'm trying on a different connection today.  ~100kb/sec speeds.

I can't wait to play with this and some models I did in 3d-Coat.

magicmoondesigns ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 11:54 AM

My download took about 4 hours last night but the Poser 8 Content zip wouldn't open.  I got an error message that the file was unusable and to redownload it.  I started it this morning before I left for work so hopefully by the time I get home it will be done and not have crashed part of the way through.

As for download speeds, while I watched it the speed fluctuated between 25 and 100 kbs on a 16MB connection.  I realize demand was high but SM should have anticipated this and made sure there servers could handle it better.

ah, another reason to wait ;o)

Einzelganger ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 12:39 PM

I am getting 100kb/s but thats not whats bugging me, its the fact that the first attempt just stopped at 600mb the second attempt stopped at 400mb and the third, well....117mb at the moment but who knows how far it will get...
still overall liking p8

FeatherDrop ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 1:02 PM

This poor download speed is EXACTLY the same scenario that I experienced with Poser 7.  And I complained bitterly about the poor speed, the failure to resume downloads and, perhaps most importantly, the size of the download files.

I also complained about the performance of the performance of the CP web site without any satisfaction.

I'll certainly give the P8 upgrade a serious consideration but I just wish that SM/CP simply made enough resources available to cater for such large downloads.

PS I've got high speed/unlimited broadband and rarely, ever experience the same poor performance with Renderosity, RDNA or DAZ3D

philebus ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 1:03 PM

Same problem with Poser 6, then again with Poser 7, and now once more with Poser 8 - all using Digital River who either don't learn or don't care because we'll all keep trying for our seven days until we get it. They can't claim not to have anticipated the demand, they just didn't bother to allow for it.

This machine has been on constantly since last night trying to download the content now. The current download started at 113kbs but at 11% has fallen to 92kbs - still the fastest attempt so far but the speed keeps falling and as with the previous attempts which did the same, it looks fated to be another waste of my time.

Sure, I guess I could just leave it and try in a few days time - but I've paid my money, so I don't feel I should have to. The funny thing is that I wouldn't have been troubled if they had been honest enough to warn from the outset that this could be a problem again and to expect to have to wait.

Tirjasdyn ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 1:49 PM

Um this time, they aren't using Digital River.  And the automatically add the charge ($8) for extended service.  I have two years to download it.

9-27 minutes left in content download.

Tirjasdyn

philebus ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 2:13 PM

I thought I had seen Digital River at some point in purchasing - I could be mistaken. Yes, I spotted the extra charge - getting to be standard nowadays.

Sadly, I'm still stuck on 4.5 hours as the speed keeps falling. I've decided to make this the last attempt for a few days - or the computer is just eating electricity for nothing.

Tirjasdyn ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 2:30 PM

The content file just finished.  Next the legacy content.  I probably won't install it but I'm paranoid about it.

Got 2-4 hours for the legacy content.  It bounces around.

After my computer fiasco last year (6 months with, finally replaced by top of the line XPS, brand new.) the only file I lost was poser 7...I have no idea how.  I had the content files, the bonus content and all my WW files...even all my runtimes backed up...but lost the installer.  I had to buy extended download service in December...and I had 4 days to download it because I was near the end of two years.  Failed 20 times.

This has been much easier.  ;)

adroge ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 3:06 PM

get a download manager like getright, or something else that's free -- which will resume aborted downloads.

I don't think this is a smith micro problem, but a problem with your own ISP - I got speeds of over 700kb/sec -- it took an hour to get everything.

I did have problems with downloads aborting with Firefox 3.5, so I opened up IE8 (which I swore I'd never do), and didn't have problems after that.

Einzelganger ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 3:10 PM

thats a good point, i have had files just end with firefox before (rarely) so if this attempt fails i will give it a go...55% 182kbs

philebus ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 3:14 PM

I have tested my speed - it's working just fine. I have a 20mb connection over fiberoptic cable. The slowest I get from DAZ is 300kbs while the file I downloaded earlier was at over 1000kbs. I really don't think that it is a problem with my ISP. This happens to many of us every Poser release and in a few days the problems will stop because the demand for downloads will have reduced - they just haven't bothered to make sure they had enough for the (predictable) large early take up.

Which is why I'm tempted to take up their refund offer and buy again later when they are able to supply the product they want to sell me. I know it is the same outcome but somewhere there has to be a principle.

Silke ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 3:45 PM

Use Getright.
After the 5th attempt, that's how I finally got it, because it lets you resume.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 4:18 PM

I finally got the P8 content and the legacy thing down tonight after letting it sit overnight yesterday only to wake up to a couple of incomplete files :(

But at the second attempt it worked. Mind you it took almost all day - around 10 hours and that's on a 25mBit cable line.

SM really should consider either splitting the file in smaller chunks - and the installer could have been released as a torrent, it does require a serial number after all. Torrents aren't JUST for warez, y'know...

I have tried all day yesterday to try to download the Content zip file and have had no success!!!!! The Content zip should have been broken down into maybe 3 or 4 parts instead of the one huge file!!!!!!! But I will keep trying because I paid my money and want my program! I am not even bothering with the Legacy content. I already have that in my previous versions of Poser.

Can someone please confirm what the Legacy download has?  For someone who has Poser 4, 5, 6, 7, is it necessary?  Does it add anything those versions don't have?

bagginsbill ( ) posted Wed, 05 August 2009 at 5:27 PM

You want a list?!? LOL It's huge.

I have only a Beta release of it, so I'm not certain. But it seems to contain everything that came with Poser 7.

Simon, Sydney, Ben, Kate, the car, the casino, animals.

I don't see James or Jessie, but that doesn't prove anything.

Somebody who bought the product and got the released version needs to answer.

James and jessie are in the p6 folder. Its everything youve ever gotten from the original version releases. they are all separated into p8,p7,p6,p1-5 folders. So, if you have poser 7 I would think you don't need to bother unless you want it in your poser 8 runtime folder. I didnt have p7 so I did the download for it. I got everything installed around 10am which from the time of purchase, download and installed kept me awake for about 24hours. I crashed and woke up to play!

Now I'm off to tackle the GI. I'm seeing big black blotches in the render and have to see what to tweek... or maybe I just didnt let it finish. Off to learn!

Could someone who used GetRight please outline the steps in order to get it to download?

@Fugazi - same here and the speeds are still the same because we're all still trying to get it and failing so server load will remain huge.   I wonder why SmithMicro have such a problem wrapping their mind around that concept and not breaking down downloads to smaller chunks.
