Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has heard anything from Siggraph or any screenshots of Vue 8.

It all seems very quiet on the Vue reporting front this year.

Next year SIGGRAPH will be in Los Angeles I hear.  So it should have a more enthused crowd.

Be nice if E-on would post something on their site about Vue 8's minute changes for a whole ".5" release.

Oddly I haven't seen almost ANY Siggraph stuff this year, on any subject (not merely Vue), which is odd, oh sure there are some videos etc, but it's a serious derth, which seems odd.

I think in order for a convention to be popular these days, it has to cater to the Twitter crowd.  See Comic-Con activity on Twitter before SIGGRAPH.

SIGGRAPH tries its best to charge people extra to get into the various conference rooms.  So it's kind of standard now to not get any event info afterwards.  This newer standard seems to have spread into the vendor booth sections now.

I liked the way the terrain editor seems to be improved, everything else looked pretty standard though, but still, the terrain editor certainly looks better.

that is RETARDEDLY stupid of them!!!  An expose, a showcase and they CHARGE for extra showing individual stuff...idiotic! jeesh.

I missed this year, but having been to several Siggraph shows, I have to say not hearing from anyone about what you see is understandable.  The show is overwhelming!  You see so many cool things and new ideas/software.  When you get back home and people ask what you though of it, all you can think is how great it was, but it's all a blur.

A full ticket to Siggraph is over $600 for students.  The free passes only let you into the show floor.  There are a few other areas you can tickets for, but it's not cheep.   

It would be nice if someone had said it was great but now its all a blur lol, no one said anything and that was what I found odd and a shame as people are interested in the future of the product :)

AmiC looked a bit lost in this presentation.
But the new Vue8 features sounds promising. I like the new terrain editor features, overhangs caves and new sediment flow. I cant wait to get Vue8.
Oh and did you see.. no crash during the presentation :laugh:

Mazak, it was clearly stitched together in multiple places, the presentation video was 8 mins long, but the actual lecture took 2 days due to Vue crashes lol

Seems material editor get new functions too. If I watch correct materials can have now anti aliasing per material turned of and on. Instead global turn off or on only.

Now, That is hilarious.  The terrain editor has made more jags and bad shadows than anyone cares to count.

Wow, the amount of fluff words from saleswoman was terrible.  Perhaps she should take a public speaking or presentation class.  Her charm and lack of speaking skill is not enough to fool me.

have you actually used Vue 7? :) have you used procedural meshes? You do know the terriane dtior can be larger than 256x256 resolution, hm?
And how do you know Ami can speak English as her primary  language?
Hell of a lof of folk here have English as their secondary langauge, so for them to be fluent in English as well is quite a remarkable skill when you think about it :)

She's a Vue user and a damn good one if you'd go look at her work, so she's not a "talking head sales face"
Public speaking is difficult, try it. Hence organizations have the choice between finding a user who's got reasonable oratory skills, or, a smooth proffessional speaker who knows nothing of the subject.
Siggraph as a whole seems ot use the former, as it's a setting for proffessionals who won't accept "models" telling them about technical areas the visitors are experts in.

For God's sake man, debate if you wish to, but stop sniping! :)

I just want to add that the criticisms on presentation are not  called for. I don't usually get involved in these kind of discussions, but Silverblade33 is correct. I can do something perfectly, then faced with an audience, I can make mistakes and get flustered. I have been teaching since 1966 before many of you were born. While I don't know Ami, I take offence that you can criticize her presentation.

Anyway, the discussion is on Vue 8 and its new features. let's stick to that topic.

Well I found this offensive that you call Ami - sales women without any speaking skill, Many  tutorials on geekatplay she recorded.  Please be careful in choosing your words when assaulting people who spending their personal time for others.

I taught a Photography as an Art Form free class at a local library. I was told by some regulars how gentle my comments were when I felt something could be improved. I have gotten hate mail from some  people who supposedly came to learn from my 40 years experience because I didn't think all their work was wonderful. They are no longer welcome in the class. It's sad that some people can be hateful.

You and Ami wrote a wonderful book, her tutorials are great, and just ignore ignorant comments even if it is hard.

Just ignore CobraEye - I think his main purpose in life is to put Vue and anyone that doesn't have problems with it down.

Ami's presentation was fine, particularly in that overwhelmingly hectic environment. I prefer a presentation by a real user to one by a slick PR/sales person. It was  informative  and useful.  I like her geekatplay tutorials too, its like learning from a friend.
I read some of her blog too -  another amazing woman who has to be a cross between an angel and a juggler. Not easy taking care of a family and having a career too, good thing women can multi-task so well :)

Agreed. I have ALWAYS said how much I LOVE the work and effort the guys at geekatplay.com do. Another great person I know is Peggy Walters that helped in editing their book for English corrections and technical detail. Both fine people it seems and very professional. As others, I have and use their video tutorials a lot and find them quite useful.

There are a few constructive tips I have though to help them some:

1. Slow down the mouse movements and speed. Sometimes they go too fast to get a good grasp.

2. Like on the shows videos with Ami, doing some audio edits would help such as normalizing and isolating the main voice and running a filter pass on the audio track to eliminate or heavily reduce the background noise. This can all be done by simply using an audio editor to turn them into tracks, running the filters and merging. I think it would help the quality a lot for some of them.

3. When doing a live event, either capture direct or use an HD camera that is zoomed on the screen or focus area. By using HD, you can do a lot of edits and have much greater detail and control, especially in software.

Keep up the good work, look forward to seeing them. :)

Agreed. However, it's not unique as I too have been attacked personally on this site by at least a few people. One user questioned my background because they did not like the way I came across to them on a personal level. But things like that happen because some people can not debate or acknowledge when they are wrong, you know more than them in a certain area, etc. and still others its just a conflict of personalities. It's a shame, but just part of it sometimes. Best to always stay professional and be true no matter what.

CobraEye only ever posts to snipe at Vue and people (except once, amazingly), he posts nothing to show he knows what he's talking about, iirc it seems last version of Vue he has any knowledge of was Vue 5??

Vue's an art program, not some alien invader! :D

In life, we take more care of the turds on the road, than the flowers beside it, because the flowers won't hurt us (unless we have hay fever :p).
You can't stop walking the roads just because of the turds or you'd miss the far more numerous flowers!

3Dneo probably has a good point on audio clean up, but it' that's yet more work for you and you have a lot to do anyway I can imagine!!
And as I've said before, most folk have a hell of a trouble with my Glaswegian accent, and I am a native speaker of English, lol.
Dunno if Ami is America, Canadian or what, but I don't assume she or anyone is a native speaker. Much as I like Vladimir, I'd much rather a pretty lady was speaking anyway cough, cheesy grin!
