Subject: Force poser 8 to update the library directory structure?

Zanzo ( ) posted Sun, 16 August 2009 at 1:56 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 9:04 PM

Anyone know how to force Poser 8 to update its library structure?

I went into my Poser 7 runtime and organized the character, pose, props folder.   When I open Poser 7 it shows the new directory structure I made.

However Poser 8 is still showing me the old directory structure in my Poser 7 runtime.

How do I force poser 8 to update it's library with the right directory information?

Is there an XML file I can delete that will force it to update?

(BTW clicking refresh in the library doesn't work, readding libraries doesn't work either).

Are you on a Mac?

Sorry let me put it this way.

You're asking the wrong question, since the answer is to click the Refresh icon. Poser 8 does not remember your folders - it loads them fresh every time you start them, and re-loads them for any folder upon which you click Refresh.

There is a Poser 8 bug with scanning content on Mac. It simply crashes or fails to display all the contents in certain folders.

What you said makes perfect logical sense, I assumed the same thing.  But this is smith micro we're talking about. They do some pretty dumb shit.

You would think clicking refresh would refresh the actual Poser 7 runtime folder but it doesn't do that.

I'm reinstalling poser 8 to see if it fixes the problem.

Errr, Zanzo...

In case you missed the point, clicking the Refresh icon should, by design, refresh the Library view. But like bb said, on Mac there is a bug, and it may not work. That's why he asked the question: are you on a Mac? Without an answer to that, nobody can really help you.

For information, we are not talking about Smith Micro. bagginsbill himself wrote the Poser 8 library (to a SM specification). You doubtless have your own reasons for badmouthing SM, but bagginsbill does not do 'dumb shit'!

Anyway, let's hope your reinstall gives you a refreshed library view. If not, try again here, but you need to say what OS you have.   :O)

With the greatest respect and gratitude to bagginsbill, whose invaluable posts in the last week have helped me import external runtimes into my Poser 8 library (Mac version), why would SM release this version, assuming there were Mac beta testers. Was the bug discovered post release?

SAMS3D ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2009 at 3:45 AM

Would this be the same on a pc with the question marks showing up?

This bug doesn't affect everyone, so presumably none of the testers found it. I've imported all my libraries and have no trouble at all viewing the contents.

I only found a minor glitch, which seems to be more or less specific to my system, as Technical Support couldn't reproduce it although it is very reproducible on my system. It shows up when the name of a folder starts with a #. I have an old set of poses with names like "#PT_Floor" etc. In this case the thumbnails don't show up. The item is still loadable though, and the simple fix is to change the name of the folder.

Refresh button does not work for me. Not at all.

lkiilerich ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2009 at 7:27 AM

Hi:-)
I have a problem too. I have imported all my different Runtimes and poser 8 can see them except for my hair runtime (and can't live without hair):-( All the folders are there but they are all empty. My Hair Runtime is exactly done the same way as all the other (cloths-lights-props-characters ....... and so on) but the hair is only empty folders:-(
Somone have a clue?

Well I had some of the same.
I had Poser open (on a Windows PC, and with the light library selcted.
Went to a filemanager.
Copied Judy obj, textures etc into the respectivaly poser 1-5 folders.
Went to the figures library.
Pushed on the refresh button (arrowed circle) and Poser vanished in a blink of an eye.
No errors, no warning, just "went".
Restarted Poser 8 and all was there and well.
Filed a ticket, but got a " could not diplicate".

Every installation is different.

One thing I found too.
Whatever problem I have; Restarting Poser 8 will often solve the problem.

Ohhh boy, haven't I restarted - I think I have done it the first 50 times but the same shows up. I am on a PC with Vista.

Hello people. Here's a bug for you to ponder. How come I get no ebots? For 4 days I have received zero notifications from Renderosity that people are talking.

Anyway, back on topic:

Some current users have reported:

Library GUI missing entirely
Some folders missing entirely, but other folders fine
Some folders showing [?] forever, no contents listed, not even the << empty >> indicator.

Beta testers reported these too, but the problems were solved for all beta testers. So to answer your question, how did it get released this way? Because dozens of beta testers all said there were no problems anymore. We didn't believe them - we even sent them emails and notes on their bug reports, asking them to please confirm they really had no more problems. All did.

I know that it is difficult to believe software is released with bugs in it, but that is the industry standard. Only the small minority who experience the bugs are aware of it. The greater majority see a product that works right out of the box. I explained this extensively in another thread last week. If SM and I and the beta testers all did a good job, then there are probably 100 more bugs in the software. If you are aware of 5 or 6 of these, that is statistically uninteresting.

Everybody who has any sort of problem should really contact SM. They do not learn of all possible patterns from 1 bug report. Things are deduced by seeing patterns. Patterns in OS, drivers, video cards, folder names, number of folders, locations of external runtimes, extra content among the Poser content - these are all things that have affected users, mostly because of OS bugs or configuration problems with other software, but sometimes because of legit bugs in Poser.

There is an ever growing list of this stuff, and SM has it, particularly ratscloset, who posts here a lot and is in SM tech support. I am not in tech support. In fact, for the last month or so, I don't work for SM at all. I've been doing all this support for free on my own nickel.

Last note from me, and by the way I didn't figure this out. Try removing all thumbs.db files from a runtime that is having problems being fully listed.

I read in an other tread about removing the thumb.db and did it in the Hair runtime ( the one that is empty) and it didn't help. I haven't removed those files from the other runtimes and they are not empty .................. soooo????

PS. I do understand you can't use more time answering here as you are not in the support anymore. It was great of you to offer us your time and knowledge - THANKS :-)

bagginsbill ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2009 at 9:20 AM · edited Mon, 17 August 2009 at 9:21 AM

lkiilerich:

Your "empty" Hair runtime, is that showing NOTHING, no top-level entry, or is there a top-level entry with a [?] and no contents, or is it a top-level entry with [0] and when you open it it say "<< empty >>" or is it showing some folders in certain categories, but none in other categories, and if so, which categories, or is it showing some folders in every category, but some folders are missing in random places, or is it showing all folders, but some items are missing or ....

Screenshot please. Explain name of missing runtime please. Explain or describe missing items if they are infrequent.

Also, need OS info. Also, if you could, this would be helpful. While Poser 8 is running, click this link:

http://127.0.0.1:11530/apps/lms/api.py?op=scanCategory&id=Hair

If the Hair category is not the one with a problem, then use another category id.

You should get some XML back - IE will show it, but some browsers do not, and you have to select "View Source" to see it. Save the XML as text. Attach it here so I can read it.

It was me as I had named the Top-level folder Hår (that’s Danish for hair) When I changed it to Hair all the files showed up :-) I really didn't thought about that as I haven’t had problem in poser 5-6-7 with that.

Big hugs and thank you for your help :-)))

Ooooh. Well, you did well! You have a way to work around the problem, and you have revealed that something is wrong in the XML encoding of non-ASCII characters. The whole system is supposed to be using Unicode, but I can't really figure this out on my own, as I do not really understand all the character encoding business. I know the GUI part is fully Unicode compatible, but if the new file system scanner in Poser 8 is not quite correct, the data cannot even reach the GUI.

Given that you found an XML markup error, this is very interesting and will help SM track down the actual problem.

If you have not already done so, please make a new incident report to SM here.

http://support.smithmicro.com

They will find your particular test case very interesting, and by entering it into the system, it will not get lost the way this thread might.

Thank you for the information!

I changed one of my folder names to Hår and, indeed, I get an XML error, and it does not show in the GUI. Reproducible errors are great, because they can be unambiguously corrected!!!

Good news. I just tested Hår in SR1 and it works!

We're wrapping up fixes and beta testing SR1. It's not out yet. It will be much sooner than anybody thought.

Heh I was just about to ask if you'd called it "hår" but I tought  "naah".. Well..

I know Windows shouldn't have problems with æ ø and å in filenames, but I've always avoided them. Same would go for other "foreign" characters I guess :)

OOh and .. SP1.. is it there yet? Huh? Is it?

This comment about xml files intrigues me, because SM are trying to discover why my Poser 8 library takes up to ten minutes to index, though sometimes it crashes. I mention xml files because after installing Poser 8 my ccleaner utility is suddenly bogged down with destroying xml files that it never found before. Is there a connection? I've stopped using ccleaner for now, but the library still takes ages to index. I've tried shutting off all non MS services and that speeds up the library a bit, but as soon as I add the hotfix update the library slows down again, and what's more the hotfix is interfearing with my Vista by making it very difficult to access anything from the start button. There's something seriously wrong with Poser 8. I'm affraid I find it very difficult to believe anyone tested it prior to release.
