Subject: Free Stuff ...its now a clickfest

FWIW, Sean, starting with Runtime in the .zip file is actually the standard, whether it be for freebies or for store products.  As a matter of fact, the RMP won't accept a .zip file for a Poser product that doesn't install properly to the runtime.

I hate this new system.   And having to copy the name and then paste it when the zip file finally appears is not going to be easy to remember.

I will look elsewhere for stuff for sure.

I don't always have the time to go through all the forums looking for freestuff.

Hopefully they will move the download button so you can see it without scrolling forever and a day.

JenX ( ) posted Fri, 21 August 2009 at 12:22 PM

Just a thought, and I know it's not as easy as posting to the forum, but the admin work based on feedback.

Regardless of whether or not you're happy with the new freestuff format, send an email to admin@renderosity.com
Please be patient, and I'm sure they will at least take ideas into consideration.

Installing to the runtime isn't "proper".
Installing to a temp folder where one can view one's purchases first and rename all the idiocy first is more proper. ;-)

JenX ( ) posted Fri, 21 August 2009 at 12:32 PM

Well, it's recommended, but um, you can recommend all you want to, people still do what's easiest.  I look inside the .zip file, and, if it's properly set up, I install.  If not, I do a dummy install, fix stuff, and then rezip with the same file name as the original.  That way, when I install from my back up, I can install my 40 kajillion .zip files at once (well, to their respective runtimes ;) )

And I agree. What I'm saying is, start with a folder with the product name, then inside it put your "runtime" folder and its contents, accompanied by the readme, the EULA, and whatever else..

BTW: I'd hate to have to open the mailbox at admin. I have a feeling it's gonna be quite mfull and very hot in there. :)

I know, but folks won't do that because it's not the MP accepted standard, here, at DAZ, at RDNA, or 3DC.  The MP acceptance rules turn into the freebie community rules le sigh

Yeah, I feel for them, too :(  Especially right now.

I forgot the language flags, and it wouldn't let me change it when I remembered it. Sorry.  This whole mess enraged me to point of explosion.  I do not suffer fools gladly.

This whole thing is just so stupid and could have been handled well with little effort.  I apologize for anyone I offended with the F-bomb.

This is just the straw that broke my back.  I've had nothing but bad news this week and I reached my tolerance for stupid foolishness.

btw--when did the Forum turn off it's spell checker?  I really miss it when I'm to mad to check my spelling. :laugh:LOLOLOL

It's all good, Joel, I already flagged it.   I just figured, with such a heated topic, I'd throw out a "hey, just so ya know" ;)

The forum itself never had a spellchecker.  However, I have one in my browser (Firefox), which works in the forum ;)

Quote - I don't download any free stuff and haven't in years, but unless before today it had some kind of telepathic link to a spontaneous download the moment your brain decided on something, I can't see a problem there.

Well, compare it to beforehand, where you simply got a pop-up window that (assuming the freebie maker linked directly to the zip file), you clicked one button ("Download"), and the download began, no multipage click-through spamvertising to deal with. At worst, you would be redirected to the freebie hoster's site, and you could download the item from there.

Now? Having just tested the thing (Vicky 4 braces), here's what happened: I click "download", scroll all the way down this long-arsed redirect page to find a second download button, click that, get a pop-up containing a third download button, then rename the file to something that's more descriptive than "file_54371.zip" before it actually downloads.

On the retardation scale, this ranks up there with Fileplanet circa 2005.

I'm kinda surprised Rendo didn't install an enforced 45-second wait for the download to begin, unless you're a "premium" member and paid for the privilege of not waiting...

I thought that we weren't allowed to post other sites (subject to the sticky up top) except in certain situations. This is what happens when I don't get the memo....;)

wha?  what do you mean by "post other sites", pakled?  The sticky is about not spamming the forii with advertisements, not banning all off-site posts.

I believe he's referring to Last Year's September Folly when the Freebie posting policy went through changes and at one point or another we were told we could no longer post links to freebies on other sites which ended Acadia's carreer as the forum freebie finder and she stopped posting her fabulous and rare freebie finds.

Quote - I routinely rename unzipped files, because they invariably unzip with the folder name "runtime", which is just as silly, IMHO. Is it that difficult to create a high-level folder and call it whatever it is you're putting in it?

Is it that difficult for you to install the zip into an empty runtime or a high level folder of your own creation. This standard was set WAY WAY WAAAY back by people who just wanted to click Unzip To> and have everything appear in the runtime of their choice. Why tilt at this windmill now?

JenX ( ) posted Fri, 21 August 2009 at 2:32 PM

Actually, the "Freebie Posting Policy" was the creation of a freestuff forum.  At the request of site members.  Because ALL of the forums (not just the Poser forum, which isn't the center of the universe, by golly) were getting spammed with freestuff announcements, both by creators and non-creators alike.  No one said ANYTHING about not being able to post off-site freestuff, since, well, until today, all freestuff HAD to be offsite.
The only thing we said was that freestuff announcements had to be made in the freestuff forum.  A heads up could be made here, in this forum (or whatever forum the free stuff was relevant to), but the announcement and information was to be posted in the freestuff forum.

So, go ahead and flame me, folks.  I've put my fireproof underpants back on, and I'm officially not on vacation anymore.

Are you are one of the people who think thin women aren't healthy? Just because that's what a LOT of people find attractive and vendors/ freebie makers cater to it doesn't make it a reason to start with that "give her a sandwich" stuff. I see that stuff all the time and that annoys me almost as much as the whole "she has muscle, she must be a guy" stuff I get now and then when people look at my renders.

I'm not really jumping on you (or at least I don't mean to) about this. I'm just curious about why people do that because I could understand if the chick has her ribs sticking out or something like that (at that point i would agree) but you can't make ribs show on a poser figure. Thin does not automatically mean unhealthy. Just like fat/hefty does not automatically mean unhealthy.

Remember not trying to start a fight just wondering.

Actually, there's a fine line, on ALL body sizes, between healthy and unhealthy.  I don't want to cause a 3rd thead drift today (actually, the last hour), but there's this; most 3D models have proportions more in-line with Barbie than with your average human, male or female.  Realistic characters are considered "ugly", and unrealistic ones are "gorgeous".  A LOT of the really thin characters do look unrealistically thin.  I'm not going to point them out, but they are everywhere, not just here.

Anyway, it was a flippant statement, and if I offended you, I'm sorry.

Well, I think we all have put our nose on the fact that there's no such a thing as free lunch, just like commercial television, you just can get your freebie after the commercial break. It was just a matter of time before this was going to happen. This still is a commercial site inspite of the community feeling is has, and it has to exist of the sales it makes and so does the freebie section. I'm afraid we have to live we it, no matter how much annoyance this change causes (to me at last).

o.k., my misteak - the freestuff employees didn't do the coding, but was this decision made in order to streamline the freestuff submission process and make some of them redundant?  you-know-who will hafta decide about a database with descriptive names instead of "file" appended with an underscore and a time-sequence number.  if the answer is that it would be too difficult to have a database with descriptive names instead of "file" appended with a number, then they may wish to reconsider their requirement to host these files, if it causes a drop in banner clicks associated with freestuff pages/items.

JenX ( ) posted Fri, 21 August 2009 at 5:00 PM

We don't work with a "database", that's all handled by the programmers.  Every item that gets approved is downloaded by the freestuff staff (Bobby and Brynna), and they make sure it's virus-free and follows the guidelines (no, freestuff is NOT tested).

FWIW, they're not fans of the multi-click, either, and they HAVE to go through it multiple times, just to approve stuff.

These changes do not help speed the process at all as we have to still inspect every item pre approval which involves dl'ing, opening and inspecting and in the case of runtimes, extract to make sure the do what a good  runtime should. In the main I suspect this was done to facilitate members who can't afford their own site...I don't know anyone who likes Rapidshare crap as it just wastes more time so if we can avoid having items from the 'hurry up and wait' dl sites I'll be happy. Also this will eliminateone of the more common complaints I recieve "BandWidth Exceeded"...Hope this answers some queries. It could be worse: on the DAZ and  CP site, you don't download a free item, but you buy a zero-priced item, so you have to wade through all the buying mumbo-jumbo ( not mambo-jambo as baggingshill explained, but I'm dutch so why care) before you get to the point where you can download the required stuff, ( and you have to uncheck the extended download service at CP, or you have to pay for downloading a free item after all).

But that renaming of freebies thing is another point! What a nonsense! About discouraging people!

But that's the whole point: This used to be a be a nice site with a huge amount of content, free or for sale and the first thing I do here, before I go to the forums, is to check the freebie tab and the marketplace for new items, So when I want to see freebies I don't want to see marketplace items. The next step is that they litter the forums with marketplace commercials.

But as I said this is a commercial site.

Bopper.

I found the appearance of the word "shill" amusing, that is all.
