Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
Maybe you'll be luckier than some, and the several hours required to download any bit of Poser content (a typical outfit is around 20mb) will keep more of your money in your pocket ;)
As of last time I downloaded it, and I doubt it's changed since then:
Body morphs is 12mb
Head morphs is 26mb
3D is a tough hobby on dial-up.

I wonder.. if there's a public library or something in your vicinity. You'll go barkin mad if you plan to buy more than oone or two things, most of the downloads are huge - and often on non-resumable servers (not quite sure about DAZ though)
So perhaps there's somewhere, like a public place or a net cafe where you can go, armed with an USB stick for the transport?
Most of my early stuff I downloaded while at work cough and burned it to CD's there. Back then, I was on ISDN and even THAT was too slow for me L I don't want to think about a dial-up O.o

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.
Wow... Plutom. You are truly a rare find. 56k modem.. I'm going to assume that you have used a faster connection before and say that you have some discipline. I don't think I could ever go back to 56k.
For the I.P. thing they make programs that either hide or change your I.P. for you. My wife gets them all the time on her site and it makes it difficult for her to keep track of multiple logins from multiple locations which is usually the first sign of password sharing.

Daz downloads do NOT resume if interuppted.
Yeah and what's worst is if you click cancel on it, then it counts as a download. I found that out the hard way. I thought I lost a filed so I reset the download. I remembered where I saved the file the moment I clicked on it and I hit cancel, but it still counted as a download.

I have some friends who live just outside of town who have dial-up and a 56k modem...unfortunately the phone lines aren't that great... most days they connect at 14.4k... on a good day they can get 28.8k.

Thanks everyone, Pjz99, the files sizes helped a lot. If I decide to go for it, I can do one, take a breather, and do the next one.
I found out that one is allowed 3 download attempts in 3 months.
--do have their toll free number.
Tyger-purr, perhaps your friend has a bad landline between the main teleco box (pole or buried) and the demarc house panel. Mine was a racing 28KBPS until the telephone company replaced that string. What the telephone company will do is check the noise level to his/her home demarc panel, if noisy, the line will be replaced free of charge (USA). Jan

14.4k.. wow.. I remember what that is like. At that speed I could go out to eat and to the movies and the computer would still be downloading when I got back. 14.4k is a great teacher of patience

That's fast. My old phone lines only got me 3k on a good day. I actually got 10k on a download. But that only happened once in 6 years
It has only been about 2 years now that we could get eithernet out here. So 98k seemed real fast. Now the last 5 months with the new recieving dish I get 650k. TRech is a lot slower out in the country to what towns and cities get. LOL.

Who cares? you can reset your downloads without charge....

Yep, it costs $14.95 plus shipping and handling for the burn which comes to $34.90 plus S&H and about a week enroute. -- may look into that for large bundles that can be done at one location. A lot of their stuff comes from different locations and when you order a lot of stuff, the items come at different times (days)--Jan
Hi Laurie, yep, I have a friend with broadband---completely forgot about him--and he owes me big time. I can take my external hard drive and download to it.
I did a test down load from DAZ just a minute ago, one of their updates. It was downloading at a rate of between 5.2 and 6.5kBps--not that bad----for a 56. That's less than two hours for the complete install.
Okay next question, where does that critter go (I think once I steer it to program files x86>Curious Labs>Poser 5, it should go where it is supposed to go)?
Hope you don't mind calling you by your first name-----Jan
I too run on dialup with a 48K speed usually. Thats about 2.7K transfer over the line. The phone lines are very old and the phone company doesnt want the expense of upgrading so no DSL for a while. Luckily I and others fought the library board over flashdrives and won so I can get stuff over a high speed link. ( about 80Kbps)
I did get a cd burn from Daz when I had a small spree and it was well worth the money. They burnt my entire order which was 3 disks all for the one price.

By the way, you get four tries at downloading the puppies. I used one.---Jan
Nah, that's just a myth.
There's a link there somewhere to click to reset your downloads and that sends an automatic request to them and shortly after you'll get an email with a link, and whatever you requested is refreshed and all reset.
I think you can do that for up to a year after buying something from them, maybe longer.
Yeah, I started out with a 1200-baud internal modem card, back in the day. I remember it would take 3 minutes to download a single picture....yikes.
I used to live miles from the nearest town a couple years back, and I was able to get ISDN, about 128k or so (bits willing and the creek don't rise...;) It cost a bit (about $60/mo), but the difference was amazing.
I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

On installing DAZ content:
You just run the .exe file, and the program, if it's never been run on the machine, asks you where to put the content. It may also ask you which version of Poser you have: there are signficant differences between Poser 4, Poser Pro Pack , and Poser 5 or later.
DAZ, while they don't want people to do repeated downloading, don't seem to have any limits on requesting resets. Better to keep well-organised back-ups, but they run a decent operation. They're not immune from doing dumb things, but who is?
Even slow broadband is hugely better than a dial-up modem. You can still make ordinary calls, and that big file will come chugging down the line. It beats an overnight phone-call for a download.
On broadband VS dial up (which is the better), it depends on how much you use it and how large the files are. For example getting broadband to down load 40MByte files is simply not worth the cost for me, it only takes two hours. If I want say a new version of Poser, I can order a boxed copy of it and have it here within a week and pay the extra shipping and handling charges. With the money I save with dial up, I can replace a rack and pinion steering assembly or buy high grade tires for the car, or purchase neat extensive 3D software like 3DStudio Max, LightWave or Maya where I can design my own figures***
*** Few minor things stopping me from buying these neat 3D programs for designing my own figures are talent, brains, etc. So I just save it and apply it to buying a brand new used Caddy every ten years or so. Jan

I'm amazed at your thriftiness and wish I possessed it myself...lolol. In this day and age, you have to chop where you can and if that means something that you might otherwise hold dear, so be it if it means there will be food on the table.
We get our cable internet for free because the hubby works for the cable company, but if we had to pay, then that would be entirely another matter...lol.
I rather admire you ;o).

Gang, one dumb question, when you download say the V3 head and body morph pack, does it come in 2 ZIP files? Reason I ask is that my 56Kbyte modem is on my old computer used for the Internet and I will need to transport the download to my new quad. Jan
Yep, I know that at 4.25Kbs per second it will take let's see 2.4 hours for 36 Megbytes or 1.2 hours per download. Heck, I'll go for me daily walk, watch a movie and doodle on my stand alone---Jan. Yes, I know that broad band is about 100 times faster but I usually don't need light speed and there are advantages to modem, IP changes every time I go on therefore more security and money saving.
