Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 05 9:32 pm)
Welcome to the wacky world of Poser. Hope you have the tenacity to stick with because it does have a steep learning curve to perfect many aspects of it. I cannot stress this enough, read the manual and follow the tutorial that comes with it. The most simplest of problems maybe answered right in there. Now, you mentioned that you have downloaded some content but neglected to describe what type of content it is. Are they zip files? Are they actual OBJ files? Are they characters? The list goes on. The link below will cover some basics but there are specific topics that will be beyond you for the meantime. Peruse it. Acadia took a tremendous amount of time to organize it and it is worthwhile getting familiar with it.

Again, welcome and do not hesitate to return to the forum often.

The best and most complete set of instructions for newbies.
In many cases, ZIP files will contain the same folder structure hierarchy that is found in your runtime folder under Poser. The Runtime folder is the folder that Poser accesses to load the content properly into the app so you may see them in the different library subdivisions. For example, your hierarchy will look like this:
*Runtime>Libraries>Character>(Content Author or Content Name)
*There maybe underlying folders under the Content folder but that is preference of the vendor. The important and essencial subdivisions of the runtime folder which appear in Poser are:
Character
Hand
Face
Camera
Hair
Props
Light
Pose
If the ZIPPed content follows this convension exactly, then you can unZIP it directly into your Poser folder and everything will appear properly in your program. As you accumulate content, you would want to consider creating external runtimes to ease the Poser startup process and organize what you have and want to use. This may be something your would like to start from the very beginning before content growth overwhelms you. And, by all means, play with the program and have fun. Frustration is part of the learning curve and so is experimentation.
One more thing: Do not be afraid to poke and prod and pull things to see what they do. It you're a hands-on learner like myself, the manual will mostly frustrate you. Poser won't bite and IF everything goes FUBAR, just reinstall on top of the old - that way you won't mess with your installed content - it will still be there in the new install :)
Start simple to learn the basics. Take one character and one or two lights, move it all around, try the various render settings (the Auto ones generally SUCK) and see how it works. Rememer, it takes time to get GOOD at the program, but it doesn't take long before you can play and have fun with it.
Oh and.. remember to turn shadows ON when you render...

to save you a trip (like I'm an expert of something..;). It is possible to make characters and figures, but you will have to learn a lot of Poser stuff to do that...there's loads of characters out there in Freebies at 'rosity, so load up..;)
Here's what I (and some others do)... I make a temp directory (creatively called 'temp' in my case..;)
direct Winzip to unzip files (or if in XP just copy and paste the files out of the zip file) into the temp directory.
Once you have a load of zip files done, see if you've got a directory/folder in there called Runtime.
If so, you're doing well. If not, you probably have a bunch of other folders named for various products, which have a Runtime folder in them as well. Copy this out into the temp folder so that you put both Runtimes in the same place.
It will honk at you that you might overwrite something, but unless you downloaded the same thing twice, you should be fine.
Once everything's been moved into the Runtime folder, you can repeat moving the Runtime folder out of 'temp', and into Poser. I'm not sure where Runtime is in versions past 5, but you can search using your operating systems' search feature. Just copy it to the same folder that Runtime is in, then you'll get the warning message again, but you should be fine.
Another tip - when you wind up downloading things, there's 2 items to check.
the word 'for'. For means that it doesn't work unless you've already got what 'for' is for.
For example - for Victoria 4 means you need to download Victoria 4 (from Daz 3d, the base model is free), or you won't see anything happen, except for clothing hanging in midair, or missapplied to some other character.
When you realize how much good stuff is out there for free (I have 21,000 free items loaded into Poser, and I'm not the largest collector by any means...;) You'll go crazy and download a few hundred. Six months later, when you're trying to organize, or just remember the cool outfit you saw, you may have trouble sorting it out (Unless you get one of the databases in Freebies here, or just stubbornly write your own, like I have...;).
What I do is rename the zip file to - Sitename_Character_whatitis_therestleavenormal.
Sitename - where you found it. Daz 3d, Sixus1, Most, and hundreds of other good sites
Character- V4, M4, A3, etc. These are Daz 3d characters, base models free. You can make up
your own
whatitis - character, clothes, hair, morph, whatever
therest - what the zip was originally called.
This has been a lot of help to me over the years, to figure out if I actually have something, or where to find it if I don't, etc.
Hope this helps.

And here is a free utility that makes it very easy to install Poser zip files.

Now you should be all set :)
Nice one, Phil!
Now if someone made a script to auto install all the zips WITHOUT a proper path in them... I guess it could somehow be done by reading the pp2 or cr2 and placing the textures and obj accordingly... THAT would be neat ^_^

Quote - Thanks, it works =]. Also, where can i put buildings?
I assume you mean how can I import neat stuff like buildings, aircraft, cars, and stuff like that. Usually stuff made in 3D Studio Max, Maya, Lightwave, Hexagon, Carrara, Bryce etc. and come on CD/DVDs carried by 3D World magazine etc. Look for objects having the .obj extension-they will always load into your scene. After they are there, you can click on them and the properties menu will activate- simply flip the X, Y, Z transistion dials to locate them where you want them. Additionally, you also have the size dials, that you adjust to size the object into the scene. For example, using your V4 or Poser figure as a scale adjust the building using a door way etc.
Above all have fun! Jan
PS Poser is not just for making curvacious cuties (though extremely fun to do). You can make a lot of complex stuff using Poser's primitives Cube, cylinder, torus, sphere, etc using booleans--examples: chairs, tables, fences, houses, pianos, lamps, grandfather clocks, buggies, windows, walls, trims, floors, rugs, jugs etc.
uhm.. You can't do booleans inside Poser. And Poser doesn't always like booleans in the first place. Some import just fine, others import with invisible-until-rendertime-facets. Generally it's a good idea not to use booleans with Poser stuff.
But then again that would require some sort of modeler in the first place, which Poser is not. It's a program for posing and placing premade stuff :)
Just making it clear in case it wasn't obvious :) I've seen a few people thinking they could make models inside Poser. You can combine things out of primitives, Dr.Geep has shown us all how - but Poser isn't a modeler.
A good, and affordable modeler is Hexagon, sold at Daz3D. And of course there are free ones like WinGS and Blender.

"others import with invisible-until-rendertime-facets. Generally it's a good idea not to use booleans with Poser stuff."cough where did you ever get that idea??
bool's are not a problem if you model correctly. the problem you refer to (or "webbing" as I call it) occurs when a facet has a curve that has not been handled correctly. basically, the facet needs to be broken down into more facets to break up the curve.
the link is for a trueSpace piece I wrote that demonstrates the issue and how to fix it. (the problem is the same whether it's a hole in the mesh or a curved area or a Boolean merged piece. )

Hey everyone, im new to poser, as you can see from the topic. I have a couple of questions, so bare with me =P.
Whenever i download a model or a prob, it doesnt show up on my poser pro. Is there a certain way to download it to your poser? Again i am new and its my first time, so be gentle ^^ .
Also, whats a quick way to start my poser adventure? Reading manuals can be frustrating =/..any other quick tips that many of you learned? or was it self taught?
Thanks for your support in advance, much appreaciated if anyone can help.
