Subject: Vue 7 on a laptop

Sambucus ( ) posted Sun, 04 October 2009 at 9:18 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 10:02 AM

Does anyone use Vue 7 or 6 on a laptop? Im thinking of buying Vue but it would have to go on a laptop because of my mobility probs. Need to do my computing from my comfy chair, lol. What would you say is a reasonable spec?. Im only looking in the low middle range because there wont be a lot left after buying the software. Suppose I could go to £800 tops. Ive seen some with Vista 64 and 4 gb of ram but Im not sure of the cpu s or graphics cards that come with them. Read the blurb and theyd play Call of duty 4 full on with no problem but Im sceptical of that.
Any help and suggestions would be appreciated, especially minimum cpu and card.
Thanks

I ran Vue 6 on a laptop for over 6 months (was waiting on this machine to arrive... my bro took his time building/shipping it LOL)... it did fine on the laptop, and it was a medium-range laptop, dual-processor, 1 gig memory (or a bit less, cant remember - i know it ended up with 2 gigs memory by the end of everything).  I had no problems at all other than a bit of flickering in the screen (due to the video card - pay CLOSE attention to the video card recommendations)

i suggest an external mouse. =D

i managed on a single core 2.2ghz with 2gb ram for like 4 months [still use it sometimes when I also have comfy chair requirements :)]

it worked but it really really wasnt fast...

so i guess, if you want to work on a laptop its possible as long as you dont mind waiting, if you want speed it might not be for the price range.

id suggest an second monitor though but thats just personal preference i guess (you can fit a second monitor nicely on a coffee table or sideboard :D)

Just wanted to tell you I need to do my computing from my comfy recliner as well, and when I asked for the same advise here at the Vue forum, someone suggested I still consider a desktop computer.  There are so many ways you can rig up a desktop setup from your chair.  I have a sliding table, where the wheels of the table fit underneath the chair (raised on a couple of wooden slabs) and where the sliding keyboard extension tray on the table fits into the chair so that I can still lean back a bit to support my neck.

I can't tell you how satisfied I am with my setup (I bought the table at Office Max for quite a bit less than $100 - can't beat that!), and I was able to get a decent 64-bit quad core with 8 GB RAM for not much more than $1000 (at that time).

Something to think about....

I have Vue7.5 installed on this laptop:
Vista32
dual core duo 1.66GHz
5400 rpm HD with 320 gigs
3 gigs of ram
Geforce 8600 m GT graphic card.
It runs absolutely fine, openGl is flawless, no openGL related crash, renders slowly though.
Doesn't like displacement too much either!

Melikia,
That sounds encouraging. Yep, definitely a mouse.

Mari-anne,
i had considered this, but I have already taken over a whole room for my computing stuff and the look on wifeys face when I mentioned moving into the living room as well was not encouraging. There wouldnt be a problem if I could find a LARGE office chair in the UK but I`ve had no luck so far. Found one that was rated for 40 stone, (about 500 lbs) but the seat  was 18"  wide. Like to see the guy that was made for.

bruno,
Thats slightly less spec than one i was lookimg at so it would seem there is no problem there. Now I dont know wether to wait until the Windows 7 models hit the stores. Sounds  sensible.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, mine is 2 years old now, so no doubt yours will have better CPU

I saw an ad on TV yesterday that indicated the Win 7 release date was 10/22/2009 so I'd wait.

I am doing all my stuff on Toshiba core 2 duo 1.66GHz, win xp professional with 3GB ram (used to be 1 gb, all my pictures in gallery are made on 1 gb system) and GeForce 7600 128 mb vram...works fine, but when you wanna do more complex scenes, you soon hit the limitations....I have Vue 6 ....no problems at all but  agree with Bruno....displacements and in many case radiosity  are  no go area :)

So the plan would be to do all the work in comfort and save it and render on my desktop. Think thats what Ill do/ Thanks all.
