Subject: (OT) Need an MS Office document (MDI) converted to a different format (Urgently)

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 15 October 2009 at 8:33 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 7:40 PM

I was sent a reference letter via email in MDI format. Unfortunately I am unable to open it as I do not have MS Office. I tried downloading an MDI viewer, Unfortunately it seems that you have to have MS Office in order to use it

Anyway, I have a job interview tomorrow and the girl asked me to bring 3 reference with me. She only asked for names and phone numbers, but since I have this written one I thought I'd bring it along.

Would someone be able to convert it to another format for me, such as .DOC or .WPD so that I can open it and print it out?

I can send it to you via email, just let me a PM with your email address.

I do need it by 9am tomorrow (Friday).

Found this on the web, may help you:

"MDI is a proprietary file format of Microsoft for storing raster images of scanned documents together with optional annotations or metadata, and can only be produced or read by certain Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) module included in Microsoft Office 2003 and later. However, when you upgrade to Windows Vista and Office 2007, or bring the MDI files via USB flash drive or email to another computer with only Office 2007, you will encounter an error of “Windows cannot open this file”, and subsequently ask you to either let Windows to go online to look it up automatically, or manually select from a list of programs that are installed on computer.

The problem happens because “Microsoft Document Image Writer” feature is not installed by default when you run Office 2007 setup. So in order to open and view or print the MDI files with Office 2007 installed, try one of the following workaround or resolution.

Firstly, you can insert the file or drag and drop the MDI file into a OneNote page to view it instantly.

Second is a permanent solution, by installing Microsoft Document Imaging Writer and its corresponding support for the file format.

  1. Go to Control Panel, select “Uninstall a program” link under Programs section.”
  2. High Microsoft Office 2007 (it may show Ultimate, Enterprise, Professional, Small Business, Home and Student, etc).
  3. Click on “Change” located on the navigation link near the top of the window.
  4. Select “Add or Remove Features”, then click “Continue”.
  5. Expand “Office Tools” section.
  6. Click on the drop down list for “Microsoft Office Document Imaging” and select “Run all from My Computer”.
  7. Click “Continue”.
  8. Click “Close” when installation done.

A new virtual printer “Microsoft Office Document Imaging Writer” is created and allows you to print to MDI format (a TIFF variant). And from now onwards you should be able to open any MDI files by simply double click on them. If you still can’t, try to restart your computer."

Thanks so much for all of the offers and support.  I've sent the file off to be converted.

I'm so hoping that I get this job!!!  It's working in Cancer Care, which is a clinic.  I've been caring for patients at the bedside for almost 15 years and I'm frustrated and  tired of the politics and working short staffed.

I'm an excellent nurse and I know my job.  I just don't feel I'm giving good quality care to my patients because my shifts are so busy and I have too many patients in my assignment  that I just don't have the time I feel I need to commit to each patient.  I've only been back at work a year and I'm already feeling burned out.

Several nurses on my ward are actively looking for different positions. One nurse already  found another position in the hospital that she is happy with. I could get another job in the hospital without a problem, I figure after 15 years I can be picky and I decided that  I want days, no weekends and no holidays! Those positions are few and far between so I started expanding my search outside the hospital.

This clinic setting will give me the same pay. The hours are Monday to Friday days with some days not being able to leave until maybe 6 or 7pm (but it's better than working until Midnight!).  No weekends and no stat holidays.  Plus I will have autonomy with certain things where in my current setting I often feel my hands are tied.

Nope. Didn't help at all :(

The only thing in my Start Menu for MS Office are the language settings.

And I don't know what "OneNote page" is. I looked it up in Google, and I don't have that program either.

The only thing I have is an "Add/Remove Programs." I don't see anything with those names listed in #2 in either tab for "Change/Delete" or "Add New Programs."

Thanks for the suggestion.  I downloaded and installed it.  However, when I try to open that file I get nothing but a bunch of signs/symbols on the page that opens.  And then my computer freezes up.

Glad you got it sorted but for others that arrive here for future reference I've successfully used this site  www.zamzar.com/ a few times now to convert some very school specific documents my teenagers have brought home that totally stumped our Macs that have Word for Mac, Open Office & Keynote and can usually manage most things.
It can convert text documents, images, videos, cads and compressed things regardless of platform.
Very useful site though sometimes a wait at most  of 1/2 hr as a free user on occasion.

Lol, so no more excuses at my house of why homework can be done !

Cspear explained the nature of the file in his post above.  It was a scanned image and I was able to open it through Microsoft Office Document Image program and Adobe Acrobat Professional.  Microsoft only offered to resave the file as a TIFF while Acrobat offered to resave the file as a common PDF.

Thanks so much everyone!!

I'm all set for my interview tomorrow.   Just hope I don't look like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/.      I have such a bad cold today :(

I'm back from my interview! I have no idea how I did :(

I was a blt blindsided by the interview. I haven't interviewed for a nursing job in something like 15 years and it seems the process has changed.  They are now done by panel interview meaning that you sit in front of 2 or more nurses who take turns asking you various questions ranging from general to nursing situational, and you have to respond.  Your answers are then given a score and the highest score plays a role in who gets the job. Obviously references and qualifications too. I know I nailed the references and qualifications.  But I'm so not sure about the interview itself.

One thing in my favour!  I showed up for the interview sick with a really bad cold, and the nurses interviewing me were also sick with a cold, so we were all coughing, sneezing and blowing our noses!   We had some good casual interaction as well, and some laughs.  So hopefully I came across as easy going and likeable.

I just now got a job, and have had a very few interviews. Thank heavens you got nurses to do it; the current crop of interview questions are all 'behavioral', in that they want to know how you answer vaguely-worded questions (tell me about a time when you were frustrated, etc).

Good luck, don't forget to send them a 'thank you for the interview' email, and I hope you get the job.
