I've been told at a windows 7 seminar that windows 7's XP mode is actually a virtual machine running XP, just for your XP app, so any XP app should work in XP mode.
Maybe its due to the nature of this solution that it handles files differently.. having to push them safely through into your virtual winXP machine..
You could check the associations for .obj files, maybe another program then bryce is selected as the preferred program to open .obj files?
Or maybe you've got hidden extensions on/off and that might cause problems? Maybe theres a double extension? or no extension at all?
The length of the file path may also cause problems, in winxp i think its not allowed to be longer then 256 characters or such.

If you can't solve this might I recommend the free app, PoseRay, for 'breaking' objects up into their material parts. My tests of it [PoseRay] using TG2 which often needs the breakup for the same reason have all worked well. If you need coaching in PoseRay either Site mail or e mail me at bobbystahr@renderosity.com

Rayray,
You know, just for kicks, I took the XP compatibility off Bryce 4 and started it up. It worked, but it still can't see th .OBJ files I've saved through Windows 7. Windows 7 doesn'nt still doesn't see them either. I've already made Bryce 4 the default program for opening new .OBJ files, and they have the little Bryce 4 icon on them now, but when I click on them, nothing happens. I just noticed something though. The old .OBJ file icons from done by my old computer are showing the Bryce 4 icon, but the new (invisible) ones show the Bryce 4 icon with a little padlock at the bottom. All hidden files and file extensions are being shown, and I'm running everything as the administrator.
bobbystahr,
Thank you for your recommendation, but I don't want to break the objects/figures up into their material zones. I want to break them up into individual parts. As an example, say I import a Poser figure into Bryce and the figure is washing dishes. With individual parts, I can assign all the finger parts and both hands a different bump map and greater specularity to simulate wet hands while leaving the rest of the body "dry". But if the body is fused as one material group, the figure's going to have to be all wet, or all dry. Unless I make a specularity map, but that's more work. I think I'll try saving the figure as "unwelded" from Poser and see if Bryce 5 does anything different.

I think that can be done in PoseRay as well...if you send me a test figure I could see if I can make it do that and send/post a tute here on how...
bstar@mts.net is the best place to send it if it's under 10M, or you could post it to freestuff and as the Mod I could dl and delete it from there unles that breaks rules.. ...

I just got a new computer with Windows 7. Everything has gone exceptionally well until today. I exported some figures from Poser as .OBJ files as usual and then went to import them into Bryce 4. Since Bryce 4 imports an object in individual pieces rather than by material, I sometimes start out with it if I need to texture separate parts of an object with the same texture but different texture scales, direction,, specularity, etc.
I navigated to the folder the .OBJ files were in, but they did not show up. I verified via Poser again that the files were there. I did a search in Windows 7, but it couldn't find the files. I then looked in the folder they were supposed to be in and Windows Explorer did not show them.
Other .OBJ files transferred over from my old computer showed up fine. So it's either the way Poser is generating the .OBJ files that prevents Bryce 4 and Windows 7 itself from seeing them, or it's something else.. Bryce 5 and 6 could see them. Poser 7 and 8 could see them. Are there different kinds of .OBJ files?
