Subject: How to get a realistic skin texture

jedijosh44 ( ) posted Mon, 21 December 2009 at 8:34 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 10:32 PM

I'm very new to poser, and I was wondering if there was a way to get skin to look more real (like blemishes or freckles) for models (especially V3 Vicky) or if there was a download, if someone would be kind enough to direct me to it. I heard Giolon mention a Yuma skin texture, but I don't know what that is or where to find it...

Welcome to the madhouse.  Goodbye to your hair and your bank balance. :)

Look in the Marketplace here for V3 Characters.  AFAIK, Yuma was for V2.  It's by StefyZZ, who also makes skins for V3, so you should find something you like.  I have most of Stefy's V3 stuff and they're some of my favourites.  Blackhearted also includes exellent skin textures in his character packs.  For that matter, the DAZ V3 skins are also good but for some reason they hardly get a mention.

That's only half the story, though.  BagginsBill is the expert on getting the most from skin textures.  There are several threads here and at RuntimeDNA regarding his techniques.  He also has a homepage with varous goodies to help you with rendering realistic skin.

Bagginsbill has created the most versatile shader system that adds stark realism to just about any skin texture available.  It's application can be extended to other textures with modifications, but the best thing about it is, that it is free.  The link below will introduce you to it's development.  It is an extensive read, but there are plenty of examples and comments.

Re Bagginsbill's versatile shader system (VSS): you may find this "for dummies" tut I wrote for myself to be somewhat helpful:

I vote for changing the forum name to either the Bagginsbill fan club or the Bagginsbill appreciation society.

To be more precise, don't limit yourself to a single texture, add the Bagginsbill magic to any texture & you'll be amazed & happy like the rest of us. :woot:

Thank you so much everybody. I downloaded the script mentioned and I'm gonna test it out.

I got the skin shader by iteself and it looks pretty good (I'm using version 2) but I have a problem. How do I find textures to use on the body? I bought a Xunah figure, but I can't find the skin, or anything connected to Xunah for that matter. Help!

SamTherapy ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 7:20 AM

Xunah is a texture set, not a figure.

Load V3 into your scene.

Go to the "Pose" folder.

You'll find the icons for loading Xuna onto V3 there.

Thanks for the info, but now it's searching for a huge amount of files and not finding them. Why is this? I can't load the texture, it tells me to search for like 40 files but none of them can be found.

jedijosh44 ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 7:35 AM

some have names like "asianface" and "heartface" and stuff like that... Very frustrating!

SamTherapy ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 8:39 AM

That sounds like you're looking through the list of morphs.  Do you have the DAZ morphs for V3.  They are essential for the character you're trying to load.  If you have the free V3, you won't have most of the morphs, just the few basic ones built in.

If you don't have them, you can either buy 'em from DAZ or ignore them and just load the skin texture.  If there's no MAT pose supplied with the character - and I'm sure there will be - the textures are most likely in Runtime/Textures/ZS3D.

You could take a look at the free section stuff and narrow your search to V3 morphs and textures:   I have found over 20 skin textures for V3 thanks to the talented people that  posted them.   Begin around January 2008 as a starting point (go pre and post 2008, most of the freebies are before the introduction of V4).  Jan

hborre ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 10:56 AM

Until you purchase V3 morph pack for both head and body, I would suggest you stay away from character MATPose files.  Those will contain morph changes to V3 which you are unable to perform right now.  Take Plutom's suggestion; there are plenty of skin textures in the free section.  You may need to enter the Material room to apply them, but, then again, maybe not.  Also, let us know which Poser version you are using so we may be able to help you further.

jedijosh44 ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 10:56 AM

Yea, I used the MAT pose and it worked fine. But how is the injection version different than the MAT?

All right, I will. Thanks for the tip. =)

Figured out how to add a ground (not very advanced, but it works)

How the heck do I make my character have shadows?

It looks gray where the shadows are supposed to be.

jedijosh44 ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 11:52 AM

How do I move the figure up or down on the screen? The feet are below the floor...

Plutom ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 12:47 PM

First shadows:  Click on one of them planets that is circling that tiny sphere.  Those little planets are all your lights, when you click on one the property for it will be displayed, enable shadow for it and it will cast a shadow behind the figure.

Next, raising the Titanic,  move your cursor over the hip portion of the character and click on it, then use the Y axis and move your character up (The hip is a valuable part of the character, because you control the complete body along the x, y, and z axis.  To increase or decrease the size of your character,  click on the body (located in the hiearchy menu under the figure).

Additionally use the window drop down menu and click on hierachy to view and click on say the body to display many of your full body morphs for the character.  What are full body morphs:  they are combined morphs that control more than one part of the body of the character.  There are also individual body and head morphs by click on individual parts.  Use both in creating individual characters.

That should give you a kick start in dial flipping to create outstanding personally shaped characters.

Also get familiar with both the user and tutorial manuals (located under your help menu).  They explain most of your basic questions.

Again the heirachy menu is a great buddy to have.

Just wait until you download a few of them texture maps and enter the world of the Materials Room where you will learn how to apply simple nodes and texturize your V3.  Jan

Please don't take this the wrong way but you really should take a look at the manual.   Posing and rendering basics are covered pretty well in there.

AAhh ,this so brings back memories of when I first cracked open Poser 5 and experienced 3d for the first time...keep up the good work Kiddo, next thing you know youll be re-texturing and downloading Wings3d to learn how to model props..Look forward to seeing your progress. Please post post some renders for us to see.

P.s -master lighting (IBL, IDL, GI) and youll be amazed at what you can do!

hborre ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 1:39 PM

And gamma correction.  An important, little know subject which actually will determine how your renders will appear on your monitor as well as others.

Believable3D ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 2:49 PM

The simplest and most reliable way of having your figure standing on the floor is to look in the main menu at the top. Choose Figure > Drop to Floor.

--and don''t forget to uncheck inverse kinematics (that's located under the Figure drop down menu--that is unless you like the left toe in right ear pose)--when using Inverse Kinematics, everything moves except the feet with a grounded figure.  Just thought I'd tell you that before you try and pose a grounded figure and you come back and write WTH?????  Jan

Is there any way to delete/remove a part of a single piece of clothing? For example, I have something I want to remove from Leia's bikini top. How do I do it?

Plutom ( ) posted Tue, 22 December 2009 at 9:37 PM

Yes there are several ways.  The easiest way is to see how the bra is constructed via the hierachy menu, you could make some parts invisible IF the bra is constructed that way.  example:  Example if it has a body, left and right collars, neck, chest, etc, you can make invisible  say the neck.  You can use the material room and see how it breaks down in there and make that part transparent via the Poser Surface.  Jan

santicor ( ) posted Wed, 23 December 2009 at 6:16 AM

select the piece of clothing.

click on  the group editor  ( a "square inside a square" icon in  the middle toolbar)

the whole scene will now  look sort of blacked out.

a small group  editor  window will open up-  you sould see the bikini top as the selected item.

click  new group.
you will  be asked to  name the group - i suggest call it "invisible"

now you  have the group editor window again.

click  the icon  of  "+" in  a circle ,  ( as oppsed to  the "-" in a circle) this will now let you choose the polygons  that  will make up  the "invisible" part of the bikini.

HERES A TIP -  at this point you  might want to  go  to the main toolbar and click " View - element style - smooth shaded lined"  so  that you  can  see the outline of the individual polys.

slart clicking the polys  that  you  do  not want to  see. They  will  turn  red if you  have selected them. ( you  can  go  tpo the "-" icon to  unselect anything you may have accidentally chosen)

when you  have selected  everything that you  want invisible, click , in the group  editor window, ASSIGN MATERIAL.
( caution - THIS CAN  BECOME A PAIN IN THE NECK  IF YOU  ARE NOT SURE you have the exact parts selected that  you  want invisible - so  see if you  can be pretty sure before you  start creating new mat zones  ;-)    )

now  close  group  editror - scene should go  back to  a normal look, and if you  did the tip  of changing  view element style  to   smooth shaded lined  you  now  should  click - view- element style - texture shaded.

now go  to  material  room. ( you  want to  have bikini  slected during this whole time)

drop down list for bikini  in  the material  room  will now  have a part called  "invisible"

select this part  and  in  the main posersurface window  set  "transparency" to  "1"   set  transparency falloff and  edge  to   "0"

Done.
