that  purr was probably it's tummy rumbling.
Jokes aside - what an excellent thing to experience.  wonderful
well I am away from home and haven't had time to test poser pro 2010 much as yet.  I have had some crashes with very very large scenes on trying to render.

So when is the official release date for Poser Pro 2010? Pricing?

Yesterday I uninstalled Poser 8 and switched back to Poser Pro, As usual Poser Pro worked like a charm, rendering multi-figure scenes with no crash problems at all. Please don't get me wrong, I liked Poser 8 a lot, I love P8's new interface, the performance and the quality, just hated that constant "out of memory" crashes.

It's great to hear the positive experiences with 2010, I can't wait until I can get my hands on it.  (I never side-upgraded to 8 so I have to wait...).

Loooooooooooool the testers send the bugs here instead to SM, PPro2010 will have more bugs than P8

I've not done a whole lot with 2010 yet, but I did post this in my Gallery.

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1996340

It's a redo using a single quadratic source light with IDL off of some grey cards. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit (4 GB memory) and used the 64-bit background render option. The biggest improvement is that my computer finally actually rendered it; it's too big for 32-bits. It took a few hours on my laptop, which is a vast improvement over even the failed 32-bit render attempts. There are still a few artifacts around the neck jewels that I haven't chased down, but they are much less than the 32-bit, non-IDL Poser 7 render.

I'd like to participate in this Beta, but I already have Poser 8 and It would not be smart to buy Poser Pro now that I know Poser 2010 is coming, possibly in a few months.

I would suggest that anyone buying Poser Pro going forward should be eligible for a free upgrade to Poser 2010. Maybe Smith Micro has plans to do this, but I don't see any mention of it on their site.

I'm sure sales of Poser Pro would increase if they made this type of announcement. Seems to me like it would be selling point and a win/win for all concerned.

Would you be happy it you bought Poser Pro this late in the game, only to find out later about the Beta and Poser 2010?

Well... let's face it, anyone who is investing in a program of the cost of Poser Pro is probably going to be apprised enough of the situation to know there's an imminent release.

Besides, your scenario would upset existing Poser Pro and P8 dual users. Free? the rest of us dual users are still going to have to pay for the program. We'll just get the cost of the P8 sidegrade discounted.

I think what's most likely is that as we get closer to the release date, the old Poser Pro will get discounted heavily.

Well if they discount the price won't that also upset the Pro user's that paid the full price?

Upgrading recent customers is fairly common these days. If they upgrade new customers they would not have to discount the old stock. That seems more profitable to me.

Well, there are always someone to complain. But this practice is fully justified IMO, because the other users have had the benefits of the program for all that extra time. Plus, in the world of technology generally and software specifically, it's accepted that being current means a lot.

So the answer is - not really.

At most, I doubt it would affect profitability at all. Presumably, they're not going to discount more than the upgrade price to the new version. But more likely, by discounting they suck in more new Poser Pro users who wouldn't pay the full price. Meaning, more profitability.

I successfully downloaded the beta, installed it, and was able to run it exactly once.

I decided to run the script to import my runtimes.  It gave me the message that it would kill the application.  I clicked yes, not knowing it meant exactly that.  It's dead.  Well, it thinks it is dead anyway.  It gives me the message 'This beta version of Poser has expired.  Poser will exit now.'

I have no idea if there is a newer beta, I could not find one anywhere.  I tried to redownload the beta thinking maybe that was how to get it; but it wouldn't allow me to do that sayiong I had already used my serials.

Anyone else get this?

John

I didn't get that, but I did discover that the runtime import script didn't work, I had to do them manually.

Keith ( ) posted Tue, 29 December 2009 at 10:05 PM

There's an easy way to import them manually without going through one at a time.  Find your LibraryPrefs.xml for the previous verison of Poser (say Poser 8), and copy it over to replace the  one for PoserPro 2010.  When you open PP2010, voila, your libraries are loaded.  The only extra step is to manually add the runtime for the previous Poser version (which can be done in Poser, of course).  And that's it.

Believable3D ( ) posted Tue, 29 December 2009 at 10:31 PM

Yeah, I know how to do that. But honestly, I thought it would be just as easy to add manually as to go looking for the file. :)

Mind you, I only have about 14 runtimes, and other than the app-based ones, they're all in the same containing folder. If I more, or had them scattered all over the place, I probably would have done it differently.

If anyone is on a 64bit machine and has some AVI texture/displacement movies, run a test with a movie node applied and the 64bit FireFly engaged (render separate process).

I see the movie in the material room.  I see the movie in the preview window.  The movie tex/displc renders if you use the default 32bit FireFly.  But, engage the 64bit FireFly, and the movie node is ignored.

If you are on a 64bit machine and have some AVI textures, run a few test renders using the 64bit FireFly (render in separate process) and see if you get the same results.

Also, maybe one out of ten of the models I've made fail to import in PP2010beta.  I can't see a common factor among the OBJs which fail to import.  But P7 and Poser (7) Pro can import the same OBJs without a problem.  And if I import using the older Poser (7) Pro or P7 and save the model as a prop, I can then load the prop in PP2010beta without a problem.

And yes, Anthanasius, I have submitted bug report forms.   Heh, heh. ^^
