Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 24 8:11 pm)
I was reading the manual (yeah, I know - shock, hey?) and it occurred to me that this could happen if the hair groups got locked. Wondered if I had done so accidentally. Unfortunately, no such luck....

Hi lululee. Thanks for responding.
Yes, I've tried reparenting (multiple times, because that's what made the most sense to me), but still no luck. But it's only happening with the hair I created, not with purchased hair, so I'm wondering if P8 glitched the save process to begin with.
I bought a 1.5 TB external drive yesterday; I'm gonna try moving all my external runtimes off of my computer to give it some breathing room and see if my Posers function better.

How odd. maybe it is a Poser 8 glitch. I know that all of my prop parenting is going haywire in PoserPro and PoserPro 2010 when saved to the library but it is fine when reparented manually. I have no problems with it as a figure. I just created an image with some fur clothes I am working on. The bra, wrist and panty are figures with material zones that i put fur on. They are holding very well. Maybe you could convert yours to a figure. cheerio lululeeThanks, lululee... that sounds promising. I'll have to look up how to do that. Haven't converted props to figures yet. Hopefully, that will do the trick.

lululee, I add material zones when I do the hair groups, as the grouping editor provides that option in the Hair Room (at least - that's the only place I've used the grouping editor, to be honest).
"Is the skullcap coming unparented or is the"hair" flying around"
Well, it's odd, because in some cases the whole kit and kaboodle seemed to be staying in original spot when the figure moved. But at least with the instance that started this thread, I assume the skullcap stayed in place since at least some of the hair groups stayed stuck on top of the head (which makes no sense at all to me; I can't imagine what could be different between the different groups).
Anyway, I copied my files to my new drive last night. I'm running a defrag now, but that will take several hours. So I'll work on my home renovations this aft. Maybe I'll get a chance to work on this later and see if it works better once the computer is cleaned up... I just hope I don't have to start all the work over from scratch.

Well, this is a weird one.
I have always parented by selecting the prop and using the top horizontal menu via Object > Change Parent. That supposedly works, as verifiable by the Hierarchy window etc. And it's worked for all the other props I've used. But not for my dynamic hair, even though the skull cap I used as a base is a merchant resource and doesn't have the problem by itself.
Anyway, just now for the heck of it I tried setting the parent on the Properties tab of the Parameters palette.
And whaddaya know - it actually seems to work!!!
But why? Shouldn't both methods have the same result?
And what must I change in the file in order for it to parent properly on load?

Hm. It only seems to work properly if the skullcap is set to visible (I want it off by default; I only want the dynamic hair groups showing.)
That is a bug, surely?
EDIT: but at least this gives me a workaround, as I can leave the skullcap visible and make it transparent in materials. That won't affect render times as long as "Visible in Raytracing" is unchecked, right?

Saving a group of props as a single smart prop does not work. The parenting between the props gets saved but the parenting to the base figure gets lost. The solution is to save the combined prop as a smart prop then edit the PP2 file to reinstate the parenting to the figure.
Open in a text editor.
Search for "UNIVERSE"
The full line will be:-
parent UNIVERSE
change it to:-

Okay, this is odd. I've been working on dynamic hair, and it all seems good when I save - it appears that the various hair groups are parented to the skull cap. However, not so, I guess.... when I load the hair and parent the skullcap to my figure, I'm having troubles with piece of hair staying behind when I move the figure.
I can't figure it out, because when I view the hierarchy, everything looks right.... all the hair groups are ordered underneath the skullcap.
This is happening in both Poser Pro 2010 beta and Poser 8.
I'd imagine it was simply a bug, but ... I don't seem to have the problem when I use dynamic hair that I've purchased. ... Although when I move there can be a delay before the hair moves, and when I hit save the hair visually flies off the head to its original position, but returns to the proper spot when the save is finished.
BTW - I'm parenting the skullcap to the head. That is correct, right?
