Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 10 10:00 pm)
You wrote it, they are from DAZ and not from SM. You have to go to DAZ3D.com, create an accpount and download all the free figures from this link: www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/free-3d-models
But, be carefull, you have to have big pockets as the free figures are only the base figures. To use them you will have to spend a lot of bucks for morphs and textures and, if you don't want only nude renders, clothings.

If you have Poser 8 and if you opted to go with the default installation (which most do), then the default library that is initially visible in Poser 8 will be the one titled "Poser 8 Content". This is located in your Documents folder.
You have installed the DAZ figures to the local Runtime within Program Files which is OK but you must now add that library using the "Add Library" button located near the top of the library window.
Hope that helps.
Actually there is a lot of free clothing and textures available.
You might try refreshing your library to see if they show up.

Guys, the OP already has the products purchased and downloaded.
This is the problem caused by Vista or Win 7 security, NOT Poser 8. Programs (such as Daz installers) are not allowed to install content in the Program Files folders of other programs.
Your files have been placed in a virtual store, because Microsoft is trying to protect you, and ending up preventing you from doing what you're trying to do.
This has nothing to do with Poser 8, other than the fact that when you installed Poser 8, you did not pay attention to the installer's recommendations about where your main runtime should be.
So now you have your main runtime in a protected area of your operating system. You cannot do what you want to do without knowing a lot more about system security, admin rights, and UAC.
Your choices as I understand them are:
1) Re-install Poser 8 the way it was suggested to by the installer. Then re-install all your add-on content.
I'm sure somebody already posted instructions on each of these somewhere, but I don't have those links handy. I'd have to search the same as anybody else.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
Note: I cross posted with a lot of others who said correct things, too. I'm not correcting them. I agree with them. I replied right after Jules, who was suggesting that you have to go get the DAZ installers. No you don't - you have them already.

Thank you Bagginsbill. :) Now I know I installed Poser 8 as it suggested, because I never change where the installer wants to put it's stuff. So that isn't an issue.
I just tried the "run as administrator" and still not there. And I tried to install into a different runtime folder and it won't let me...says that it's an executable and therefore has to go into Poser's application.
BTW...I do have Windows 7.
The DAZ installer is easily fooled. Make a dummy runtime folder for your Daz content, like this:
DAZ
Runtime
Geometries
Textures
Libraries
In the DAZ root folder (not in a subfolder) create a text file called Poser. Rename it to Poser.exe. The DAZ content will then install correctly into this folder.
Poser 11 Pro, Windows 10
Auxiliary Apps: Blender 2.79, Vue Complete 2016, Genetica 4 Pro, Gliftex 11 Pro, CorelDraw Suite X6, Comic Life 2, Project Dogwaffle Howler 8, Stitch Witch
Sorry for reading not the whole Post :(
I found, that the new Installer is not working with a Dummy Poser.exe so you may have to copy the poser.exe to the folder Poser 8 Content. After this you can install into that directory and Poser will show the files in the library.

The way I do it:
Put a dummy (or copy the real) Poser.exe into a folder.
Let's call that folder "Main Runtimes", for clarity sake.
So now you have something like c:/Main Runtimes which contains Poser.exe
Now make another folder in there, called "Runtime".
So now you have something like c:/Main Runtimes/Runtime - which is empty.
Let's say you want to install V4
Run the Daz installer for the BASE figure. (Make sure it's the poser file. usually prefixed with dpc, not ds)
Choose the Poser install.
When it asks you where to install, point it at the C:/Main Runtimes folder.
IF it throws a wobbly and moans about Poser.exe, go back, and choose the Daz Install where you specify a location. (It works on mine, but hey, maybe I'm special)
Ignore the initialize things for now. I'll get to that.
Now you can install everything else into that directory. (Elite, Morphs++, Muscle, Creature, etc etc etc)
Each time, ignore the initialize, until you are done.
When you are done, you can either keep it there and add the runtime to your library, or you can move everything to the main runtime, or you can make a new runtime and call it V4 if you want individual figure runtimes.
Ignore the initialize on your desktop. In fact, delete them. They are only shortcuts, but they will point to the wrong location if you move the runtime.
After you have the runtime where you want it, go to the !Daz folder
(Runtime/Library/!Daz)
You should see a file called DzCreateExPFiles.bat
Doubleclick it to run.
So now you have a clean install, with everything initialized, in the location you want.
All you have to remember is to add that runtime to your library, if it isn't one you already have in there. :)
Hope it helps.
PS
I have an install folder with the main figures for exactly this purpose.
I install any new morphy pack into there first.
I install them there, and then copy the bits I want to where I want them. (I don't use the main poser runtime) This way I always have a clean copy of the figures, and a way to add morphs without messing up my real runtime. :)

Thanks PhilC, it was your post that put hubby on right path to figure it out and I now have V4, M4 and A3 and...it's all good now!!!!
Thank you everyone for your quick and informative responses. Without them I would still be unable to put Vicki in some rather sticky but interesting situations. ;)

Let's try this
1. Create a folder called "Michael 4" anywhere you want, NOT in the C:Programs Folder.
OK, If all of that went A-Ok, the use the Plus Sign (+) folder in the Upper Right hand side of the Poser 8 Figure Library.
Browse to the Michael 4 Folder, select it and OK
Now, you should be able to use the Drop Down Arrow where it says "Show Library" and select the Michael 4 library.
Note: I make External runtimes for each of my Characters and Add or Subtract their folders as I use them.
You could also use the Plus Sign Folder and browse to your Daz Studio "Content" Folder and select it. That will let Poser use the Runtime that it is in daz Studio.

mariner - she's already sorted out.
Turns out my guess was wrong. She did not install the Daz content in her main runtime, because she didn't know where her main runtime was, and because Daz installers make assumptions that are no longer valid.

The thing that threw me off was this sentence.
Quote - I had a friend look and we found that they are in the folders of Poser, so installing technically worked, but I can't find them in the application.
I assumed that the friend who had a look and found that they are in the "folders of Poser" meant that somebody who knows Poser and its runtime structure verified that the content was installed in the main runtime.
That apparently wasn't true.
By the way, anybody using Poser 8 or Poser Pro 2010, the program will TELL you using a tooltip exactly where it is finding your content. Just hover over the label of anything and it will show you the full path, unless you disable that feature.
Once you know the full path, there should be no question or confusion about where your stuff is.

I figure it still could be helpful to anyone who wants to make External Runtimes for Poser.
I like to keep my Main Poser Runtime as lean as possible. I only install Python Scripts etc that really need to be there. Everything else goes to External runtimes.
I never install Poser to the C:Programs Folder nor use the Default Install for the Main runtime.
Old fashioned here. I like my Poser Main Runtime in the foler with my Poser Files (poser.exe).
If I could save my Render presets in that folder, like the old days, i would do that as well.
I also always Turn Off that UAC
On a different Note BB
Did I read you correctly tht with PP2010 we will be able to use Windows Explorer to bring items into Poser?????? That would mean that we no longer would need to load that External runtime to add items from it into the scene??

One thing I'd suggest. Backup the geometries, Character, Pose and Texture folders so that in future you DON'T have to run the DAZ installer. How many of us have re-installed our entire Runtimes from scratch? And how many times? Having a complete backup of my runtimes has saved me a lot of headaches. Working with ZIP files isn't so bad but I don't care for DAZ installers. Save often, backup your work and backup your sorted runtimes.
Best Wishes and Welcome to the World of Poser,
Rªnce
I have an external drive (You can get a 1TB drive for less than $100 these days) , and keep my Poser folder and all of my external runtimes backed up to it.

Hello,
Totally new to Poser. I have been playing with DAZ since late December. I got Poser Tuesday and installed V4 and M4 and 3 and Aiko and all other free stuff from DAZ and when I open Poser, they ain't there. :(
I had a friend look and we found that they are in the folders of Poser, so installing technically worked, but I can't find them in the application.
The folder path of where they hid themselves is: Program files/SmithMicro/Poser8/runtime/Libraries/... then split into either Characters or !DAZ.
How can I get the application to see them, please????
Thanks in advance!!!!
