Subject: Daz Dynamic items

Daz's dynamic clothing items state that they need Dazstudio to work. Is this brand hype or will they work with Poser's clothroom as well?

Poser can turn anything into cloth, but having said that, you will need to convert them to .obj format to use them in Poser. D/S uses a different dynamic system that won't work directly in poser. There are a couple of threads over on the Daz forums about doing this.

No, not only do you need Daz Studio, but there is this control thingie to make them work properly. I have my own issues with this business model, where the whole dynamic clothing thing is very proprietary so only Daz can make it... what a self-limiting concept there.

Personally, I think they shot themselves in the foot with this one.

Why did I suspect that this was the case?

MyCat ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2010 at 8:27 PM

I believe that they don't even work in Carrara or Bryce.

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Fri, 05 March 2010 at 8:42 PM

There is a thread on here explaining how you can export a Daz Dynamic clothing item as obj and bring it into the Poser cloth room to clothify it. But it's a few extra hoops to jump through.

Dont count on having an obj file to work with in Poser.  If its Daz dynamic cloth then forget it for Poser.

Well... I think Poser's dynamic cloth is also proprietary, FWIW.

Actually it might be able to work in poser but i'm not an expert as I've only used poser's dynamic clothes twice. I tried it out last night using default settings in the P8's cloth room.

Poser dynamic clothes are standard .obj files and  can be used in other apps that have a general cloth solver system.  ex. Poser dynamic clothes work fine in Blender after scaling up to a reasonable size.

The DS dynamic cloth requires a specific proprietary plug-in to use and a proprietary software to produce. The clothes only work in DS without more extra trouble than it's worth.

I believe the proprietary part isn't the prop, but the software to handle the dynamics. DS couldn't have a clothroom just like poser, That would violate copyrights.

DAZ made a deal with Optitex which makes high-end clothing simulators for the fashion industry. The software to make the clothing is very, very expensive. So DAZ opted to make the clothes for users. It took a couple years to get a plug-in developed to do extra things with the clothing in DAZ Studio and also for the DAZ artists to learn the Optitex software. It was their best option at the time. They wanted to port it to Carrara a couple years ago but couldn't get it to work.
Now they are working on soft body simulation for Carrara using the Bullet Physics engine and also a plug in for DAZ Studio 3 using Bullet as well..

A few folks have had success in exporting the clothes from DAZ Studio as obj files and then running those through the Poser Cloth Room. Depends on the clothing and the expertise of the Poser user.

You can also export Poser dynamic cloth animations as a series of obj files which most programs can read including Blender and also a pz2 file which Carrara and Vue can also read.

Me too.  I love dynamic clothing, but I use Poser:: Not Daz|Studio, so even if I like something I see, I can't buy it.

You need the free version of DAZ Studio to export the clothing as a Wavefront OBJect. The dynamic clothing control plugin which is sold separately is neither necessary nor the least bit relevant in this process.

Going for this proprietary OptiTex solution probably wasn't the best idea but there's hardly anything nefarious about it. So enough with the bullshit please, thank you.
