Subject: How does Vue 4 handle multiple Poser figures?

Crescent ( ) posted Sat, 28 July 2001 at 9:11 PM · edited Sat, 18 January 2025 at 11:05 PM

I want to pose several figures together then export into Vue. (Makes figuring out character interactions easier.) Does Vue handle this function okay? Vue Master choked, but to be fair, it was 4 fully clothed people with transmaps, etc.

Hi Crescent. Are you sure that Vue Master choked? It can take a while, and Dan didn't really write anything into to let you know it's progress. It can appear to have crashed (according to ctrl+alt+del), while it's still working. Nevertheless, Vue 4 doesn't seem to have a problem with multiple Poser figures imported as .PZ3. But I say that carefully, because different peoples' different systems seem to be responding to the Poser import differently, with wildly varying results. Now, in Vue 3.1, I would import Poser figures as .OBJ. I have managed (with 128 MB RAM) to import a model as large as 80 MB, though it took a good while. If you're using Vue 3.1, I would export each figure from Poser separately as .OBJ and then make sure that in Vue the "resize and center objects"(File-Options) selection is unchecked, and then import them one at a time. That way, all the pisces will fall in exctly as they were when they left Poser, positioning, etc. You also might want to try to save each character in a scene as a PZ3 as well as .obj and then run each separately through VM, and import the resulting .OBJ files separately, again with the "resize..." option unckecked.

"pieces", not "pisces"...this is the wrong month for pisces. ;)

Vue is 3.1. Vue Master gave me the following errors: Bad Name or undetermined error, then Run-Time Error 5: Invalid Procedure Call or Argument. The obj file was 43Mb. I know to import to Vue as .obj files. I have 1.7Ghz Pentium 4 processor, 512Mb of RDRAM and a 2Gb partition set up to be my paging file. Hardware should not be an issue. The OS is W ME, which I'll blame for everything but global warming, but still ... I'm hoping I don't have to do every single item separately. That's 14 items, not including props. Please don't tell me to do the props separately as well! And I really don't want to go and reset all the bloody transmaps! I'm going to have to contact Dan about VM because I couldn't get even 1 figure with transmapped hair to export properly. Error 5 every time. (Can I at least get Error 4 or 6? I'm really tired of 5!) Well, I guess I'll be upgrading a bit sooner than I expected. I hate doing scenes in Poser and of course I'm one of the few "lucky" ones that VM hates. Vue 4 will probably hate me, too. :-( This may not be the right month for pisces, but it is the right month for pisses - as in this is getting to be a pissy month! Grumble, grumble, grumble!

With 3.1, you'll have better luck importing one figure at a time, but I mean "figure" as one P4Fem with clothing and hair, for instance. Sounds like you have plenty of RAM to export/import using OBJ with no problem. Props could be troublesome if exported with the figure. So if your P4Fem is carrying a sword, for an example, export the sword separately. As Mike mentioned, be sure in Vue that "resize and center" (in Options) is not checked. When you import each figure and prop, they will come in at the correct positions relative to "where" they were in the Poser scene.

I don't know, but I've heard Win ME is not a good thing and that Win 2K is far better, so that might be the problem with the errors. I'm still using Win 98 SE, and I don't have these problems. You have to figure though that I think Dan wrote VM under Win 95--- maybe 98, I can't remember. but if you can get Vue 4, I would highly recommend it. You certainly have plenty of RAM and other resources for what you want to do. :)

heyas; well, i imported a pz3 with one human male, one conforming tunic, two conforming boots, one posable parented cape, one eagle, one heavy horse, one conforming mane, one conforming set of fetlocks, one posable tail, one posable rein, one bridle prop, one chest harness prop, one hip harness prop, one posable saddle, two glove cuff props, one sword and one scabbard prop -- oh and one hair thing. without one glitch. ::brag brag!:: now when i used to do objs.... if you want to export the whole poser scene as one obj, you should open it in uvmapper, and set each material to one group; then save without materials. that seems to be the easiest way to get the least amount of pieces you need to texture in vue. you grab your 'skin' group, throw the skin material on it, and you're good to go. if you have two figures with two different skins, then you need to separate them out. which could get hairy. and, as you probably know, if you throw all the texture maps into the same directory as your obj (or vice versa), then vue should load them automatically. well, semi-automatically. ;)

Hey bloodsong this reminds me. Wasn't one of the first two Poser world CD's supposed to have a horse bridle setup that you made on it? i bought the first 2 CD's and couldn't find it anywhere. Or am I hallucinating? ;)

Check Bloodsong's website for the horse tack stuff. I don't think he's ever had anything on a PW CD, although I could be mistaken. But the tack is on the website. :)

Should be present and accounted for. It was one that I was "storing" for you, so I know it made it back. :)
