Subject: I have to many fonts ?

R.P.Studios ( ) posted Tue, 08 June 2010 at 4:32 AM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 1:21 PM

10950 to be exact.

Problem is, it is slowing down Photoshop like crazy. I use a font viewer to manage them, but  when i want to type something in Photoshop it is bogging it down like crazy. Is there a way to fix this ?

I use CS4 Extended btw. Windows 7 Ultimate x64 12GDDR 3 ect. ect. i see no reason why I can do all my other work no problem, but Photoshop bogs with the fonts

wow!! no wonder it slows down . Way too many fonts. loose them.
one way of organizing fonts is to use them for one project, then remove them, and store it a folder in the project folder that you keep (i guess you keep whatever work that you do stored in individual folders along with their corresponding art work/documents.
thatw ay, if you need a font, and know you have used it before.. you can easily pick it up from the folder, and re-install it. Only to de- install after you finish use it.
Works wonders...

Eh, unfortuantely uninstalling them is not an option I have right now. They are all jumbled in with the system fonts and what-not. I will have to go through then individually I suppose if there is no way to get Photoshop to behave with them better, or just not type for a while :D

R.P, go thru them individually. Have fun.
cheers...

Yup...  I agree, loose some...

I mentioned in another thread that you don't have to have the font installed in order to use it in photoshop, all you need to do is open the font you want to use especially if you're only going to use it for one project or two and then never use it again (or not for a long time anyway), keep it opened and then fire up photoshop, the font should show up in your font menu.  This way you don't have to have a zillion fonts in your font library.  Most of my fonts are on my external drive, I only have a few installed that I used very often, the rest I only open when I need them.

Problem is with Loosing them, I am a modeler as well, and with Cinema 4D I use a lot of fonts for signs and such, It uses the default windows font folder I assume, and it does not bog any of my other programs down, Cinema 4D Vue ect. Only Photoshop :(

"go through them Individually... ???

I am glad your joking... if not I will assume you are anyway and move on LOL

Did you try increasing the performance % in your photoshop preferences?  I'm really not sure it would make much of a difference but it's worth a try I guess...  Also wondering if you have the Font Preview (in edit/preferences/type) enabled?  Maybe this slows things down and disabling it might help?

That little tip up there about opening the font and it being in your font menu in photoshop even if it's not installed may very well work in Cinema 4D and other programs as well.

I did try these things, nothing helps. I assumed with 12G RAM it would be more than enough, but I forgot PS uses scratch dicks, which i can only max out at 3G, oh well, no joke...looks like i gotta go through them all one by one :(

RP..sadly..you will have to loose the fonts.. and sadly..i didn't joke about going thru them individually and decide what you want. Even if you use alot with Cinema, isn't there anyway you can just install them for that particular project?
photoshop takes ages reading fonts. Did you try Lucie's suggestion of not using the preview of the fonts? It may help.. i dunno.
Lol..what is funny..teaching a teenage student basic photoshop. ..she has gotten brush mad and now.. font mad.. I've had to caution her about installing fonts just yesterday!
12G?? whistling. Whopper of a machine you got. I've got 4gigs on my laptop.. and though i've been pleading to increase it..been told I've maxed it.

I've had Bitstream Font Navigator (comes with CorelDraw). I have approximately 20,000 fonts. I had to spend some time setting up font groups so I can install what I want when I want it. I never have more than 1,000 fonts installed at any one time. Actually I have 1,153 installed at the moment. Think it's time to uninstall a couple of hundred. But it's just a matter of dragging and dropping to install/uninstall.

I am actually giving "Printer's Apprentice" a go ATM, looks like with a lot of patience it can be cleaned up.

What the HELL did i need wingdings for anyway ?!?

Just make a folder that isn't the system fonts folder and move the ones not being used there. If and when you need them, move them back. Call it something like "MyFonts". If you're clever you could even make a shortcut that references the system fonts folder, so you don't have to dig too much from the MyFonts folder, etc.

I think when people say to "lose the fonts", not to remove it from the computer completely - but rather only the system fonts folder.

But at 10,000+ fonts, you probably need the management software like the one mentioned above. With that many you may also have some redundant fonts (different names, but essentially the same) to weed out as well.
