First Bar-Code if you have ZBrush, I bow down to you. I got the ZBrush 3.1 30 day trial and there are dents in the desk that holds my computer. I seem to always get to a one way place that I can't get out of and have to reload. Any good books on this monster. It doesn't have a make art button??? Sends me whimpering into a corner after every attempt.
Hi Les,
Are there any other free modeling programs??? Oops saw Laurie's comment on Wings-totally different and as Laurie states is the baby sister of ZBrush-it takes a sphere and you mold it like you would clay only instead of fingers you use the mouse or tablet or both. I tried Wings and Wings is a lot more difficult to do, its similiar to Carrara or Hexagon great for model building but not organic model like faces bodies etc. Sculptris might be able to do cars, aircraft, the same way you would do a car in clay. Haven't tried that yet.
So far three of us have come to light here. Trekkiegirl has been working with this little program and hopefully will join us.
Strengths: It has very few brushes
Can learn it all in just a few hours, making your own model from a sphere the first
day eg faces, parts of body from same sphere just by grabbing portions and pulling etc, adding mass by drawing more clay on. For example you can make the same critter you have in just an hour or two, export it as an .obj and color it in say Poser. Eye balls and teeth are done by clicking on new sphere and if the symmetry is on you get two spheres, that you can resize and pull into the eye sockets. If you click on the face, the eyes turn red (mask) so you can work the eye lids around the spheres or click on the eyes (eyes turn white and face turns red (mask) for adjusting eyes.
Weaknesses. After going into the paint room and paint, just good there, exporting the .obj won't carry the paint information to Poser, Vue or Carrara.
There is a seam running down the front separating the two halves that is used in symmetry.
If you move the face, the eyes etc need to be moved separately.
Can't do any rigging, might be able to in Poser (I never even attempted that).
I don't think you can export the face, eyes, mouth etc as a group. Importing it into Poser is just an .obj no children (eyes, mouth etc).
UV mapping -- well I can't get it to work period. TG made a cute little owl that is colored and haven't ask her how is did it in both Poser and Sculptris.

Hi Plutom,
Thanks for the detailed response. I downloaded Scllptris, but unfortunately it will not run on my ancient Win2k machine. I'll be getting a new PC soon, so hopefully I will be able to run it then.

You might be able to take care of both those problems in "UV Mapper" (there is a free version), if you are willing to put the work in, I'm not saying it would be easy. Probably a easier if model the eyes as a separate obj.
Quote - I tried this with P6 James but on importing the morph target it just keeps saying wrong number of vertices -- any ideas on how to prevent sculptric adding to the imported mesh ?
Most likely just keeping your operations to pushing and pulling...it's adding clay and what not that also adds verts ;o). Think of it like Poser's morph brush...all it really does is move the verts around - it doesn't add anything.

Apple, I tried using both Jame's versions low and high resolution and both failed for me too.
The hi res model causes Sculptris to close immediately, polys are too high. The low resolution model appears to either tear or deform the polys beyond Poser limits.
The only model that I have found (so far) is the high res V3 from DAZ. The poly count is low enough to be accepted by Sculptris and high enough to grab and move around and still be accepted by Poser.
I know you want James, its a great model. However try V3 (if you don't have the model, its free from DAZ).
Finding out more about what Scupltris/Poser can and can't do daily
Laurie if you got P6 to work, please tell us how. Jan

Hi folks, did you know that Scupltris can modify V4, V3, body parts via exporting say the head of V4 as an .obj, importing it into Scupltris, make wrinkles, warts, change nose, lips you name it (almost the same as you would do in ZBrush), exporting it back as a .obj, and load it as a morp target. TG, I think you may be interested.
Best of all folks its a free 3 Megabyte program from Scrupltris.com. Jan
