Subject: Carrara and X Frog Plants

I thought I would see if you guys and gals can help me with a little problem I am having with the importing of X Frog Plants from Object format. The problem is that the leaves do not import with transparencies. Seems no problem to fix right? So I try to manually add the texture maps in the shader tree in the correct positions and I do get transparency alright, Total Transparency. In this first image you see my Assembly Room and that the tree although it has color does not have transparency to shape the leaves.

In this second image is my Texture Room. To my knowledge I have the Color Map and Transparency Map in the correct position, please correct me if I am wrong. Also, the Preview looks like the Assembly Room.

Here is the Alpha, but know, that I have inverted the map already and it seems to do nothing. Also, look closely at my second image in the Texture Room. The Leaf looks OK in the Leaf Texture WIndow. That is what the leaf should look like, but when rendered it does not even show up.

r u using nodes or on a single machine?

I would check how this object is put together. Is that just the leaf shader? Got a lot of shading domains.

No need to think outside the box....

Thelby ( ) posted Mon, 14 June 2010 at 8:42 PM

Just a single machine. The thing is that the trees work just fine in Terragen 2, Bryce and Vue, but will not work correctly in Carrara!!!

I used some obj converts from xfrog in C. Worked fine. The materials file and sometimes obj can be in a different version that it can't read things correctly.

Using a Billboard (Splat) not the way to go? Brian

Thelby ( ) posted Mon, 14 June 2010 at 11:38 PM

You are using a whole tree as a billboard. I am having trouble with Leaves on an Imported X Frog Tree Object. I can't figure out why I can import into Vue, Bryce and Terragen 2 and it is OK, but when I import into Carrara, any version from 5 up, the leaves don't want to work!!!

You're not using reference shaders somewhere in the list are you? I've found on occasion some peculiarities with how alpha or transparancy handles things in those instances. (Seems to be a bug in versions 5 & 6.) Instead of using the references, you actually have to copy and paste settings over from the other shader. In my case I discovered it since it was a pain in the butt trying to figure out why a shader based decal wouldn't apply properly.

It could also be one of the texture map settings, I'd play with the premultiplied or color/alpha toggles. Sometimes alpha or transparency seems to work better with .tga or .png images that have actual alpha to it.

Originally the texture files were TIFFs. TIFFs, as you know, can carry their own Alpha and Color Channel. Some of them I have are like that and others have a seperate Alpha and Color. After failed attemps I converted the Textures to Bitmaps and JPGs and created my own Alphas on those that did not have one. The odd thing to me is that the objects and textures work perfect in Bryce, Vue and Terragen 2. Although they have to be manually loaded in Terragen 2, but after that they look great.
All I have done is to add the Color Texture in the Color slot and the Alpha Transparency in the Alpha slot. If there is another way to go about doing this, please tell me and maybe showing me your shader tree might work along with a brief explanation.
Thanks.......

More play! Swapping around some of the leaves that come with those X-Frog downloads and adding a bit of "Wave!" in Carrara. (The left one is the original) Brian

I have been going through All my X Frogs and odd thing is the Palm type tree seems to be OK, but it is the Broadleaf and Pinus variety that do not work.
I concur with you about your source, those trees seems to work well and I have used some of the Broadleaf TIFF files on them and theye work just fine. Understand this. The Froggers I have were Free in dot MAX format. So I downloaded the 30 day free trial of 3DMax2009 and converted them to Wavefront Object. This worked very well in all my other landscape apps ie Vue and Terragen 2 and a friend tried them for me in Bryce and said they are great, but not so in Carrara and as I said above I am finding it is the Broadleaf and the Pinus, (Pines, Furs, Cypress etc.), that are giving me the problems. I will do a render in T2, Vue and Carrara of the White Fur and be back soon for a posting of the results.

If want to try to tackle the White Fur and see if you can fi x it, I will glad to send it to you Brian. As far as other trees are concerned and including those from the web-site you gave me, YES, it is easy enough to change anything on them, but Not So with those I have,....................................Do You Want to Try??? This is what the trees look like in other apps.

Two problems Thelby.
I am not using Carrara 8 untill it is fixed--only working in Carrara 7.
And that particular file is not one I have
. Can you do an exercise utilising one from the AL09 to AL18 group that I downloaded from that site?
11pm here so wont be back until tomorrow.

It's the same in Carrara 7, 6, and 5. I use the textures I have from any of the X Frogs and they work in AL09 and AL18 with no problems. Here's what happened: I downloaded 58 3DMAX // X Frog files. Someone had converted them from X Frog to dot MAX format. I in turn Downloaded the free 2009 version of 3DMAX and converted the files to Wavefront Object and they work just fine in everything except Carrara, but the kicker is that some of the file do work in Carrara, only the flowery and tropical trees and plants. As stated above the Broadleaf and Pinus varieties do not work in Carrara, any version of Carrara that I have.

Thelby, as I understand things, 3DMax still has not got a good .obj setup.(Nowhere close to the export quality of MoI say).  Try exporting from there as 3DS maybe?

Download the Demo version of X-Frog!-----  WOW!

Open all those .xfr files and export (.3ds seems really good) which you can use in Carrara.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

I'd take a stab at one of those. If I can manage to fix it, I'll send it back as a C6 .car file.

The more people on it, the better. Right?

I am actually caught up between wanting to purchase XFrog or Onyx Tree Suite. Both offer an exceptionally realistic and powerful plant modeler. There is just so much free XFrog floating around I haven't made up my mind!!!
