THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: WIP - Frying an Egg - Crits please!

I started this last night after some thought. It's an experiment first to try making an egg in Bryce. The scene is that it's hot you can fry an egg on a rock.

There's a second image coming.. but this first one just want to get your critical comments. Default Bryce sky. I'm not happy with the ambience of the distance space craft... changing atmosphere ambience removes the shadows of the egg shells.

I'm also not too happy of the POV. Want something more dramatic yet keeping the egg as the center of focus.

A slight improvement with the craft in the back. That ship is the most complex 100% Bryce only model I've made to date. Fully furnished on the inside too. Anyway....

I Like everything except the egg shells.  They remind me of Kinder Surprise Eggs made of chocolate.

Maybe if you gave the eggs a Green Glowing Veiny look... might work better.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Wed, 11 April 2007 at 7:42 PM

Is that a real egg inside there?

Analog-X64 ( ) posted Wed, 11 April 2007 at 7:56 PM

Yup... a gag picture... but the Milk Chocolate egg shell is real.  I used to get Kinder Surprise eggs as a kid if I got good marks in school.  Now a days kids get PSP and XBOX's.... I got jipped as a kid. ;)

hey watcha doing browsing Rendo?? Get back to work and finish you're real work.. we dont want you getting in trouble.

The egg is a good start!!  I think a real egg doesn't reflect that much.  I think you used a flat sphere for the white.  You could raise it up just a bit to give the edge some depth.  You might also try using metaballs for the white.  Gives more variety to the shape.  Much more yellow on the yolk.  Maybe find a pic online and sample the color.

Next time you fry an egg, take a look and see.  Realia is the best model.

I do like the ship.  What's inside??  Do tell...

Egg shells do look like that and the yellow part (joke)?   can be veinie and off color too.... Is this a chicken egg or a snakes or alien animals' egg..  there are many types of eggs...

@ thlayli2003: that ship I was making into a six person escape pod, originally for a scene where it's drifting in water. The details: there are seats, a ladder, computer terminals, flooring, and other bits of equipment. The ring around the craft contain floater material to help keep the thing afloat in water. There's 4 sensor "bubbles", two telescoping antennae (sp?), hatch and parachute compartment on top. Engine and thrusters, landing gear and something else but I forgot at the bottom. Several spheres for the whole craft, two floors with the under floor being more engine, O2 tanks, etc. In an earlier 2006 post I had uploaded a prototype interrior view. Comfortable car seats, though. :-)

The rest of the pic: The egg is all metaball. That's how I get the blending of the colors as one metaball blends into the other. The yellow part I had trouble with, but then again, I also have trouble cooking a real egg just right.. I always manage to leave the egg a bit too long and that brilliant yellow color becomes a flat yellow/white... I guess what I got here is what I get IRL :-(

There are some spheres on the other side I was experimenting with, to give a sense of bubbles. Can't really see them too well anyways, but I could add them around this side that's facing the camera.

I don't really know what sort of eggs this is.... chicken, alien, snake.. don't know. I went with brown shells because years ago I did a lot of traveling and spent time in Singapore, and over there was my first introduction to brown eggs. Since then I tend to buy those eggs when I can. Plus the inside whites are more knoticeable than a white egg.

Reason why it's an egg going from clear to cooked white is b/c I'm trying for that cooked rock look where the rock is hot but not stove top hot. Low dry heat kinda look. Don't know if I got it. Metaballs on a rough rock surface is not easy.

Right now I am thinking about the best way to add heat distortion. Want to achieve that wavey distortion in the air look when you're in a hot, flat environment.

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Thu, 12 April 2007 at 12:05 AM

I'll cut down on the yoke's reflection and will try to color pick that yellow directly from the chocolate egg photo Analog-X posted.

Thoughts on making a wavey, mirage type, heat distortion?

tom271 ( ) posted Thu, 12 April 2007 at 12:24 AM

Well if you allow post work then you know what to do about the heat distortions...    I like the scene but the egg and the person walking towards it kind of screws up the story behind whats going on...

I can handle the egg alone and I can handle the ship and person alone but both confuses me,...

Otherwise it is a very nice rendering...   I like the ship very much along with the landscape....

a story:
maybe one of the ships personnel is attempting cooking an egg on a rock...  they are hungry and  they don't have pots... and she is on her way back to camp site, from the ship, to report dire news on the water supply.

@ Tom271: It does confuse me a bit too which is probably one reason why I wasn't happy with it and brought it to the forum. I really don't like to mess around with Poser, but maybe for this scene someone sitting/kneeling near the egg waiting for it to cook instead of walking towards it? Or remove the egg from here completely?

The original idea was to have the egg/shells on a hot rock and a woman walking away from it, but heavily blurred. No distinct background, just a bunch of boulders near the camera with the egg. Maybe that would work better for the egg. Hrm....

An experiment replacing the egg with a grave. Just a rough and quick test to see if the scene might work better without the egg.

Yea.. there is a story here....  She's back to visit her love who die in a crash last they were here...

the first image  with the egg is interesting, but I don't undestand the story, it have to join the eggstravaganzza contest !

I think the pov is not the good one, try place the perspective object, just front of the egg yolk linked to the woman, try another angle (what angle did you use ? default one ?) it will add dramatic pov to the scene, I suppose !

more terrains in the very far background, the haze is too terrestrian to me, sky too
try different materials for the egg shell, more like alien eggs ???

go on D.a.M. ! let's see what you can do ! :-)

the grave scene is interesting, must be exploited too

good work

If it's that hot, you should have "heat shimmer" in the day scene, especially on the ship. Also, how about having the figure walking away, instead? Lou.

"..... and that was when things got interestiing."

thlayli2003 ( ) posted Thu, 12 April 2007 at 11:34 AM

I thought the egg-white texture was done in the DTE and was suitably impressed since it completely baffles me.  I would use metaballs just like you.  I like the grave idea.

Originalmoron did heat shimmer on a render of his new ship and said,

"That is post work. Draw the outlines of the heat comming from the jets with the freehand selection tool. Sett to feather about 26. Then just a gausien blur. Its simpler then it sounds :)  And that was in paint shop pro."

Maybe some version of this can be used to make it.

Before you mentioned it yourself iI thought that it would look better with more and closer focus on the egg and "DOF: ing" the background away. It´s an interesting project by it´s own to create a realistic egg and an illusion of heat.

Good spelling is overaytead

Heat well I fidn heat ripples are done well using glass distortion in photoshop or painter or whatever.

How did you do the raw egg white material?

I'm looking for a raw egg white material myself.

I've used a material that makes the white look more like a cooked egg but I'd like to try raw as well, for a different image.

Here's the current one - "EggRain"

The best eggs that I manage to fry are gotten by putting a lid on the skillet when the egg is about forty percent, and sometimes adding a little splash of water to steam things up.  I hate when the rooster semen is not cooked.  It is really gross to me.  Hard edges are a turn off as well.

The egg frying in the hot sun pic looks good, but you need some steam coming off of it.

You could do a double render to get the heat ripples a distance render so you can pick out hte right parts and a regular render. To get a better abmient light I use a lighting rig of around 64 lights in a sphere configuration over the scene with very low level and no falloff.  Old tricks.

You need to lower the yolk down into the egg a little bit more also.
